Over 18 million consoles expected to ship this holiday photo

Happy Holidays are even happier with a new game system, right? Some of my best Christmases were the ones where I got a new game system. I remember one year that my dad did that dick thing where we thought we opened everything...and there was no Sega Genesis. I was sad. Then he said it was parents present time, and when he opened his first present it was the Genesis. I fell for that one.

If games make for a good holiday season, everyone's going to be happy this holiday, it seems. The Consumer Electronics Association says that  18.24 million game systems ship to U.S. stores in the fourth quarter of 2010. That's a lot of consoles under a lot of trees. That puts games ahead of TVs, MP3 players and digital cameras this year as far as retail shipments goes.

CEA says that game systems are the ninth most popular item on adults' holiday wish lists, and the fifth most wished for electronics item. The data they've pulled from a survey says that consumers plan to spend an average of $232 this holiday on gaming gear.

My parents pulled that trick on me last year, only in this case, "all my presents" was a giant can of hominy. My real present was a PS3.

I was turning 28, and yes, it was still pretty funny.

I plan on buying a new 360 for myself since my current one decided to stop reading discs in the middle of Fallout oh it was terrible I was in the middle of wandering WANDERING I SAY. Still debating on whether or not I should buy the Kinect bundle... I still see no games that really grab my attention but damned if I'll be starved from Child of Eden oh why me :P

@mrandydixon,

Haha, too bad they didn't take out the guts of the PS3 and fill it with hominy. That would be plain evil.

@Dale North: My buddy had a similar experience. After all the unwrapping he didn't get the Genesis he wanted. So his parents had him throw away all the wrapping paper and in the trash can, to his delight he found his Sega Genesis. See the similarity?

I think the number of PS3 sold worldwide will be ten times this. Bundled with PS3Key obviously :)

I got an NES for christmas one year. My dad hooked it up christmas eve 'to make sure it worked'. We played for 3 hours before my mom stepped in. My dad rocks.

Celica beat me too it but I thought there's no way it's my hometown mall it looks cool when you see it online. Coincidentallly, typing this sitting in the Eaton Centre waiting to try Kinect at the MS storefront across the street. Anyone feel like stalking?

This is what happens when you're bored during a 4 hour break in the workday. Ignore me, I'm just going mad.

I hate to throw a wrench in the gears... but does anyone know what this report defines as a 'game system'? Does the Leapfrog count? The 'Button Press Action Center'? I have this aversion to polls and statistics. So... anyone?

@ darkroot

that was my assumption at first as well. However, I've known sites (whatever their focus) to latch onto stories for even the most remote connection. If the article was specific, i.e. naming Xbox PS3 and Wii sales, then i'd bite. It's the lack of specifics that has me wondering. But like i said in my previous post, I think about what's behind the numbers more than I probably should. really... it doesn't really change anything for me.

I share your wallet woes by the way. I just put my pre-order for DS2 in so X-mas will be a month late this year. Luckily i have other games to keep me busy.
