Over 100,000 nerds sign Starcraft II LAN petition photo

When Blizzard announced that Starcraft II would be ditching LAN support, people got upset. Local play has been a staple of Starcraft for centuries, and it was quite shocking to see that the sequel would not allow for that most ancient and noble of nerd traditions, the LAN party. Naturally, an online petition started up.

Futile as I may find online petitions, I still admire the willingness of gamers to make their voices heard, especially as they're usually a ludicrously apathetic bunch. The petition has broken the 100,000 signature mark, making for quite a loud voice indeed. Seems that, despite having the Internet, there's no substitute in many peoples' minds for good ol' fashioned human interaction.

Of course, with Blizzard being the right arm of evil publisher Activision, this collective outcry could fall on deaf ears. Blizzard is keen on pushing Battle.net with all its might, and if that means sacrificing the happiness of a mere 100,000 people, then so be it.

I couldn't agree with brainderailment more, It is very essential. I still have LAN parties for Age of Empires 2 with my cousin and friends. It's more fun having your buddies right there

The only time I ever play Starcraft is at a LAN party, they should keep that support.

Does anyone want to sign my petition to stop people from starting petitions?

...in all seriousness. I'm just going to refrain fro giving Activision-Blizzard any more of my money after their shenanigans as of late.

It's kinda funny how games like Halo were modded to support online play by tricking the game into thinking it was a LAN, and now we have this shit. We will have to leave it up to the players to fix Blizzard's broken game.

they will only have themselves to blame when a pirated LAN enabled version comes out 5 seconds after release.

why does Blizzard and activision think LAN is so evil to begin with?

psycho terror2 got it exactly right. You know there's going to be a fix to this issue at some point, but it's ridiculous Activision-Blizzard won't support it.

I haven't given that company any money for at least a year, probably more. And I don't plan on giving them any money for a long time.

@Scancase: because

1: they say its easier to pirate LAN games

2: Because "you can use battle.net, its got functionality lan doesnt for communication! teehee!"

I think that there actually is a form of LAN support in SC2 already.

You need to be logged in to battle.net and all that stuff but once the game is on all the traffic will go locally. There just isn't something called LAN mode. They're probably forcing online for ranking, exp, cheat protection and such.

Think of it like Steam.

I hate this particular move by Blizzard.... And yeah i did sign the petition because I would really suffer if the LAN support sucks. People still make lnparties, and if I have the other computer right beside me I dont want to connect throught the internet since around here everything is pretty slow.

I don't even play Starcraft but that is completely fuckin' stupid. Regardless of value I might sign the petition just out of blind anger.

I bet 90,000 of those are people who just want to pirate it to play on their one online virtual LAN services such as Garena

I'm playing in the Heroes of Newerth (Dota Clone with a new engine) beta right now and it doesn't seem to have LAN support too

so this will probably be the new trend to prevent piracy

I kinda have mixed feelings for it personally

Before I get involved in this debate any further, I have one question:

What can LAN do that Battle.net can't?
BGFUSAB's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/16/2009 16:20

You don't need an internet connection to use a LAN. So if a bunch of people wanted to get together in the same place and just plug their rigs into a router they'd be good to go. Also, because you are directly connected through the network issues like ISP slowdown or your connection sucking are moot. Battle.net is great and all and I like using it but if I was playing with someone who was in the same room as me I'd just assume use a LAN because then the connection would be 100% reliable.

There's not a single shred of doubt in my mind that hackers won't get around that (assuming this is primarily against piracy). They will certainly make sure ppl would be able to create fake battle.net servers locally. Heck, they had pirate wow servers running..

Plain and simple, if they don't provide LAN support, I'll just pirate the game if I ever want to play it. I'm done supporting Activision.

Petitions can work - it shows how many people care about an issue. If 100,000 people say that they will not buy a product from a publisher, then that MIGHT make the publisher worry.

Of course, if Blizzard do not want to give LAN support, they are free to do so. But then, a hundred thousand potential customers might also decide not to buy the game, and they are free to voice their anger. We'll see if Blizzard/Activision take them seriously.

It's capitalism - if a game publisher/studio start to do things the customer does not like, then that company will lose business. At this point it is a mind-game: will those 100,000 customers stick to their guns? Are they seriously willing to boycott SC2 over LAN? Is 100,000 a big enough figure?

Personally, I don't care about LAN support. I know a lot of people do - hell, a very long time ago when I was 14 I used to play against friends using LAN. We'd all take our computers over (usually to my house for some reason - possibly because they wanted free food) and we'd have a grand old time.

But since I no longer have many friends, and because I have a VERY reliable and good internet connection, I recognize that I no longer need LAN. Therefore, I will not be joining in this petition. It does not represent my voice as a consumer.

To all those who will boycott it, I understand you care about this issue and you have my support (sort of).

There not going to do it because of possible cracking. SC2 is going to get pirated, Blizzard isn't going to let them enjoy any aspect of it online if they can prevent it.

How many of those 100,000 are going to buy the game and forget all about the lack of LAN a week later anyway?

This is incredibly stupid. It just doesn't make a shred of sense. An RTS game without LAN? In 2009? Honestly, I know they want to stop pirating, but this seems just a little too drastic a move to me. LAN has become part of gaming culture, and a big part of competitive play nowadays. It seems incredibly dick of them to say "Fuck you" to everyone who genuinely enjoys lanning and strip it from SC2. If they have a lot of people pirate this game, they deserve every lost sale that comes their way.

"Futile as I may find online petitions, I still admire the willingness of gamers to make their voices heard, especially as they're usually a ludicrously apathetic bunch."

pfft...There is no "voice" on a fairly anonymous online petition. People ignore online petitions because they mean nothing. Typing 40 characters into a website and clicking a button is hardly anything worthy of praise.

If they actually wanted to affect change they would have to write a physical letter campaign or organize some sort of "message bomb" (think the peanut thing for the TV show Jericho). Of course that would require more actual effort, which is something I think the gaming community is incapable of.

I've nerdraged about this already, but the lack of LAN play would be an extreme annoyance to many of my friends and family and myself. Where I live broadband is not widely available, and we have LAN parties at least monthly. Basically this would mean that we would not be able to play Starcraft 2, and most of those attending would have no reason to buy it.

Or, in reality, we will probably just pass around a pirated disc so even those of us that do already own it can play it in a LAN environment. Smart thinking Blizzard! Remove a reason for consumers to buy your game to prevent them from pirating something they will be able to anyway.

If it doesn't come out with LAN, consumers that don't know about the petition will start screaming for it, I'm sure. Starcraft II will have LAN, whether it be at launch or in a patch (with suffering sales because of it).

actually,LAN will be the only way we will be able to enjoy SC2 multiplayer just like SephirothX mentioned.

In my country ,we normally play war craft 3 Dota custom maps , COD games , L4D and some other RTS on LAN and xbox360 through system links or split screen.

I just signed that partition now and i'm gonna ask my friends and other gamers to do the same. There's 103929 sig. in total now.

I'll wager that this is just an excuse to delay the game again if they need to. "You wanted LAN, you say? Well, you can have LAN, but it'll take us 6 more months!"

@IV Backstab MC: Good to know even these days blizzard still has fucktards stupid enough to devour the feces they throw on their consumers. I'm done with blizzard, personally. They fucked World of Warcraft straight to hell and left me with zero interest in wasting my gaming dollar on their other offerings.

The mere fact that Blizzard has not allowed LAN play for SC2, has not only angered many ppl (myself included), but has no doubt motivated the pirates, that they are so concerned about, to create a cracked version of the game that will allow LAN play as well as being able to play without an internet connection.

I like many others bought this game legitimately and will now be forced to download a crack in order to play LAN with my friends who also find it ridiculous that you can only play online.

So in my mind, Blizzard have not solved the piracy problem regarding their game, but have instead added fuel to the flame, and its only a matter of time before a crack is released and many legitimate users WILL download it so that they may play LAN.
