Ouch: Women In Games Conference cancelled for low numbers photo

This whole industry is a sausage-fest. I have the highest respect for the ladies that stick with it, because they're very few in number. I had a chat with a few of the brave soldiers on the press side of things during GDC. From what I've heard, it is not an easy life.

It's just as bad on the other side, where they make games. A Bradford, UK annual event called the Women In Games Conference has been called off due to low attendance. "We are very sorry to announce that this year’s Women in Games Conference has been cancelled due to low delegate numbers," the website stated.

This event was going into its seventh year. Speakers had to be sent home.

"Canceling the event was not an easy decision to make, but our delegate numbers this year were far below the figures needed to break even financially."

If only I could sprout a vagina and a pair of tits and go and do something about this.

It is a shame though. I'm all for girl gamers, and wish there were more, but if events like this aren't supported then female gamers will never have the respect they deserve.

Maybe they shouldn't have used that logo. It now says: women who go here have crabs!

This is a real shame. Just goes to show that the girl gamers have a long way to go until they are just referred to as gamers. /sigh

I have reliable sources who have contacted me saying that the minimal turnout was due to the potential attendees duty to cook full course meals for their wards. Also, raise kids. Also, vagina.

That's really bad news, but honestly why isn't this conference during GDC in San Francisco?
That's the way the Gamma4 guys did it and it seemed to work out pretty good

@Dv8thwonder: Shut up

The headline reminds me of one of those old jokes you'd see on the Simpsons whenever there would be an exterior shot of a building with a marquee.

Parent Teacher Conference: Tonight
Women in Gaming Conference: Canceled for low numbers.

I wonder why there are so few female developers? Any girls have reasons for not being one (eg. thought about it then decided against it)?

Is it possible that more women are simply attending generalized events and no longer feel the need to attend "women-only" events?

I've always personally felt that there wasn't a need for "women in games" conferences when we could be attending all of the other conferences. Why self-segregate ourselves?

there isn't many women in tech fields in general because MOST OF THEM don't like math, not all of them of course.

blame it on the fallen sky or whatever you want, but numbers don't lie.

@Elsa There's enough time in the year that people can spend a few days at a conference of peers discussing issues relevant to their particular unifying presence.

For what it's worth, I wish there was a GLBT Games industry conference.

Development is always about math though. Though I guess the client-side engine stuff would be.

Elsa's probably spot on though.

@Elsa

I am in total agreement. It seems with so many other conferences going on, the smart people went to the big conferences that mean something and they would gain more out of going to.

While I applaud the conference for brining in more women to the field, I also think it is unneeded, as women are most definitely accepted to all other conferences. Perhaps at these other conferences like GDC, they can hold panels to help each other out and get information out.

Game Development is a lot more then just math. Perhaps you should read a book, or if that is too long, a short article here and there.

I still wonder though, unfortunately I didn't think to ask the girls at school why they got into software development.

a big reason why they cancelled and why there are few women in the game industry is evident by some of the moronic comments in this thread.

Not many girls get really into videogames, at least relative to the number of boys. You've got a small number to start with, even before you remove those who lack the aptitude, so the amount of females who choose game development as a profession isn't going to be more than a handful. But, you know what they always say: more than a handful is a waste.

@Squak: You can't really lump the NAACP in your examples, since back when they were established, Black people didn't have anything else, legally or otherwise.

You can't really integrate when people don't want you too.

It's seems to me that most women don't want to go to these things. I'm sure their are a lot of female gamers but from what I've heard/seen most girls don't use their mics for the simple reason that most of the time they are going to get annoyed by the sexist, racists, assholes that fills up at least most of online games. Anyway this is pretty interesting to me.

Most girls I know who play games just aren't into them enough to care for stuff like this. My wife for instance is a hardcore WoW addict, loves Halo 3, God of War, and Prince of Persia, but she won't ever visit a gaming website.

Because why would she? She'd rather play games than read about them.

In short, she's still just a casual player no matter how many hours she pours into WoW. There are still more important things to most girls.

Good for them, I say.

i'm not saying development is all math, however, it is a significant part.

other things being equal, that alone would sway the gender ratio.
There are just as many men in art, design, PR, etc.

btw @ wandering pixel, you can stick that facepalm up your trolling ass.

I'm a little baffled by the "self-segregation" comments. Going to a Women in Games conference in no way impedes anyone's ability to attend other major game conferences.

There are certainly women in the video game industry and they are attending the major conferences, but it's not a big secret that women are still a significant minority in the industry. The goal of this event is to encourage women interested in entering game design and promote giving women a stronger voice in games. Should we really be so quick to stop fighting for this cause because there some women in the industry as opposed to none?

I'm gonna disagree with Elsa and say it didn't get enough coverage. There's a "Women in Everything Else." I can't see why one can't exist in gaming other than (A) a lack of women and (B) a lack of coverage.

Love ya as always Elsa, but not buying it.

Did they really need a whole conference devoted to saying how naughty boys are because Lara Croft has large bouncy boobs?

What is there to really gain from a Woman in Games Conference?

Sucks, although I've heard stories about how some women in the industry posture and fight with each other far worse than any men do. So I guess it makes sense that they wouldn't want to go to any sort of collaboration type of event... I guess.

Still sucks though. Hope they at least keep trying with the event.

It is a disappointment to see it go down like this. I always found these conferences to be sort of a informative event for all the women in the industry.
