On April 15, there will be no more original Xbox Live support. This affects both the original console, games and Xbox Originals that have Live features. Major Nelson doesn't go into the exact detail on the reasoning behind the change, but does at least say that this will allow for the Live service to evolve and change for the better.
Seeing as how the main reason the friends list is capped at 100 because of Halo 2, it's easy to put two-and-two together here and see what one of the new features will be for Xbox Live. Puppies. Everyone is going to get freaking puppies. Oh, and we'll most likely be able to add more than 100 friends finally.
Xbox LIVE being discontinued for Original Xbox consoles and games [Major Nelson]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Games that are backwards compatible that still have Live support are affected, it's not a case of upgrading :)
I don't understand why they are taking away original Xbox live service away. That seems stupid and I really am rethinking about where my money goes from now on.
That's not a big deal for me, but it is if they plan on discontinuing 360 support 10 years down the road. (Which they will eventually, of course)
Side note: [b]BUT HALO 2!?[b/]
...What was the post about?
I agree with this. Good riddance.
I can't imagine many people were using the service to play original Xbox games anyways. There are so many damn good games on 360, who needs the, what, 12 good XBox1 games? Hell, I can't even remember what my favorite game was....Unreal Championship maybe?? No one cares about XBox1. :P
And more importantly, this is an ill omen for a time when the 360 has become last-gen. If my hard drive full of the entirety of the Rock Band catalog, dozens of XBLA games, game saves, and fully patched support for every game I own were to die, I would be out possibly thousands of dollars if support for the 360 were someday disabled, with no way to redownload them to a new hard drive. I'd like to think that the next Xbox would support backwards compatibility and let me carry over everything tied to my account as well, but nothing's guaranteed in this day and age.
Glad to hear they are discontinuing it, bring on a bigger friends list. And don't give us a 150 friends limit please...
Nah, who'm I kidding!
Other than that, I don't really see this as much of a problem. Sure I booted up a few old games now and then but if it means extra headroom for the service I'm all for it. I do think they should look at repricing certain Xbox Originals for which online multiplayer is a key component though.
XBox1 games are not going away
Just the ability to play them online. You will still be able to buy them/own them/play the singleplayer portion of them for years to come. However the ONLINE portion shall be nixed. Sucks for Halo2 fans but if you take a peek at my avatar, you can see how much I care about Halo. ;)
That's a bit disappointing, I don't really play any Xbox games online but I'm sure a lot of people still are.
And really.... who needs 150 friends??
I think you're insulting Necros' intelligence a tad, although certainly not intentionally, he realises that the single player and system link will be unaffected by this. His main concern is regarding DLC and updates for games he might pick up in the future, or for his current games were he to lose said data. As he states the lack of online play doesn't bother him much, if at all.
I think it's rather uncharitable to suggest that he thinks 'Xbox1 games are going away'.
(I'd like to take the time to say that I'm not berating you in any way, I just thought I'd attempt to clarify Necros' position as you appear to have misunderstood him a little.)
If you don't plan on supporting online games don't build a model built around online gaming.
Kinda lame that if you bought it over Games on Demand they still won't work, though. Actually that's way lame.
Meh, the Xbox (original) didn't really have a ton of great games anyway. I think I only played Halo 2, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and Psychonauts since I got my 360. The rest of them I got rid of.
My launch year 360 and my newer 360 both work fine. Never had an issue.
Don't ask why I have two 360s. Call it a weird turn of events. :/
@Necros
While I see your point, unlike the PC, DLC and patches never really became a big deal for consoles until this gen. So the chances of you picking up an Xbox game and having it broken without a patch or DLC-less aren't very good.
If anyone is still playing Halo 2, it's about time they upgrade anyway. That's like someone still playing Killzone 1 online, which I hope no one does.
@Xzyliac
I also have 2 360's. One I was able to get as a gift (MW2) and the other (RE5) I bought to upgrade my older unit that didn't take well to the temperature change (+several degrees) when I moved it in my room.
