Original Xbox DLC already removed from Live photo

As you may already know, Xbox Live support is going down for all original Xbox games this April. Someone should really remind Microsoft that they said April as DLC for original Xbox games have already been taken down.

Reader Cliff pointed us to this NeoGAF thread where a number of people are complaining that they can't download DLC for original Xbox games anymore. Joystiq looked into the matter as well and found the same issues.

This whole ordeal raises an issue I never considered before. Once the online service is taken down, you may never get to play a digital only title ever again. Well, unless you illegally download the title or content of course.

[Update: Microsoft contacted Joystiq and stated this DLC business is an error. Microsoft is working on fixing this issue and people will be able to download original content until April 15 once the issue is resolved.]

Original Xbox DLC - Already Dead and Gone? [NeoGAF, Thanks, Cliff!]

Closed systems suck for a lot of reasons, this being one of them.

I can think of a grand total of 4 games that supported DLC for Xbox. 1 of them is worth it. None of them actually benefited from it.

What's the point of fixing it, if they're going to shut it all down in a couple of months anyway? Might as well start dishing out the heartfelt goodbyes now...

So...... what happens if they eventually discontinue Xbox 360 DLC service and my hard drive dies on me? I know that won't happen for awhile if at all, but i'd be PO'ed to lose things like the Mass Effect 2 CE DLC. (a $70 CE btw...) This is one negative of digital distribution and if companies want dd to truly succeed and replace physical media, then they've got to resolve issues like this.

Guardian, that's almost exactly what I said on that blog about when they're stopping XBL support. :)

I mean really we're just thinking about the future. 20 years from now (if that) game collectors are going to have a fun time trying to get the DLC, or the games themselves for 360.

I'd recommend getting a hard drive transfer cable and copying everything to a separate hard drive so when Microsoft decides to pull the plug on the 360, hundreds, if not thousands of dollars will not have been spent in vain. :)

@People concerned about Download content into the future

It's unlikely it'll vanish based on the fact that if people can obtain and upload roms of time limited games on obscure online add'ons for the SNES such popular system DLC should be fine...legally on the other hand :/

I have no doubt that discontinued digital media will be available on the torrent sites of the future. I'd just rather not have to bend the law to re-obtain something I already purchased legally. :)

It's just something we've never had to worry about until now. My Atari-NeoGeo collection won't just disappear, even though most the support from the companies has stopped...unless of course somebody comes into my house and steals them..or it burns down. Haha. CDs and DVD's have the same problem as the data will be gone in 70 or so years. Of course I won't be around then to care so I'm not worried. :)

DLC and Arcade games on 360 will definately dissapear at some point. Will they be obtainable on PC in some way? Maybe, but the 360 will be a lot harder to emulate than a Super Nintendo, we will have to see how it goes.

There weren't any digital only Xbox releases, just DLC. This won't matter.

KOTOR has the Yavin Station DLC, which was very useful if you played like a git.

Halo 2 has 2 maps that can only be obtained through original xbox live DLC, they will be lost forever too.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 also has 2 DLC items, a free one and a premium one.

How can you be forgetting the best game to ever grace XBL?

Mechassault!

If I remember correctly there were 1 or 2 Mech/Map DLC updates for the original Mechassault at like $5 each. Oh how I miss that game. :(

I'm sure the games will play fine (MP Xbox Live games will no longer play on line, I'm guessing). Now if this means that all the Xbox games on their fairlly new Games on Demand program are no longer downloadable, I'm gonna be pretty pissed. I've only bought Jade Empire, but I want some method to back up this digital copy I spent M$ points on or I want some credit when they pull my only method to obtain the game in case of a HD crash.

DLC should actually be back onilne, now. Last night I was able to download the skill updates for Phantom Dust.

"DLC for Xbox v1 content should be back up. Community was totally right on this point. - Marc Whitten XBL Honcho" It was posted on his Twitter.

Well, good that it's going back up for now. That gives me enough time to procure a copy of KOTOR and download that DLC. It seems to be the main loss right now, considering I got DLC for every other major title, though I need to doublecheck on Mechassault. Still...shame there's no way to work this out to keep DLC alive at least, considering people paid for it or might pay for it in the future.
