Sad news for Star Fox fans -- in an interview with G4, the original creator of Star Fox, Dylan Cuthbert, says that he's not interested in making a new Star Fox game for at least 10 years. The reason he gives is that it would be too big of a project and would require a huge staff, and it's just not something that his company Q-Games really wants to do.
What's far more interesting about the interview is what he has to say about Miyamoto and Nintendo. When asked why developers seemed to have trouble with Star Fox when Fox actually had to run around, he pretty much says that's not how the game is supposed to be and not want core gamers want, but Miyamoto forced the point and that whatever Miyamoto wants, Miyamoto gets. He also calls the Wii a 'toy', and insinuates that part of the reason Star Fox is successful is because it attracts furries. I'm guessing that his reluctance to make the game has a lot less to do with 'time', and a lot more to do with Nintendo...
It's fairly short, but I recommend reading the full interview here at G4. It's too bad he's not going to be working on any more sequels, since as G4 points out the really good ones are usually the ones he has involvement with. If you REALLY love Star Fox though, at least you know that Nintendo will get someone else to make it.
(Also, unrelated, craziness at work means Fanboy Friday is going to be Fanboy Saturday or Fanboy Sunday this week. Sorry!)
Jonathan Ross is an Associate Editor in Los Angeles who is obsessed with capybaras. Like, seriously, obsessed. If he's not playing Team Fortress 2 or getting into arguments about why PC gaming is superior, he's either off having a fancy dinner with lots of expensive wine, or sitting on the Destructoid IRC complaining that's he's not off having a fancy dinner.
Likes: Chrono Trigger, Street Fighter, Steam, everything Blizzard and Valve have ever made, playing Angry Birds on the toilet.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Hmmmmmm, he DIDN'T say that he won't do any REMAKES....I wouldn't mind seeing the original SNES Star Fox being redone w/ Star Fox 64, the cancelled SF2, & other new things.
In any case--if it's possible I'm sure someone else will take it upon themselves to churn out a Wii SF title. Guess we'll see--either soon or in another 10 years :(
DAMN FURRIES!!!
I'm glad he kinda nodded to SFAdventures being a total waste of time. That game should have remained Dinosaur Planet. I always looked at the ending as a metaphor for Nintendo ruining the game's design... if you don't know what I'm talking about, the main bad guy of the game, which up until that point is hyped beyond belief that he's an insanely powerful badass, gets killed in 1 hit by Andross and you're forced to fight him instead. It's retarded.
A star fox in 10 years could be epic
If Nintendo won't give him the budget to do that sort of thing, then I guess there's nothing for me to look forward to play on my Wii beside No More Heroes 2. (I could also say I'm looking forward to Metroid Prime: "New Play Control!", but that just sounds sad...)
On another note: Could somebody please explain to me why "furry" is thrown around like the worlds biggest insult? One of my suite mates is a furry and I fail to see how he's the spawn of Satan. Maybe I'm just too open-minded for the internet.
Umm because they are into dressing up like animals and fucking eachother? Pretty fucking retarded if you ask me.
I haven't successfully made a game yet but I don't think a game with a mechanic as Starfox64 takes 10 years.
For the sake of argument. how is that any more retarded then the hardcore BDSM people or the roleplayers who dress up their girlfriends as slave Leia while they play Luke Skywalker? I can't get myself to care what two consenting adults choose to do privately, whatever makes them happy. I've known my suite mate for over a year now, never once have I seen him dressed up like an animal (though he did draw whiskers on his face last Halloween if that counts) or heard him make animal noises, and even if he did, I still don't see why anyone should really care.
@Monodi
He said he doesn't want to make Starfox till at least 10 years pass, not that it would take 10 years.
And yea, the reason the last SF games suck so much is because they insist on the foot sections and that stuff sucks, SF64 is so fondly remembered because the ship combat WAS FUCKING AWESOME, I don't want to run around on the ground or play a Zelda knock off with fox in the place.
They need to keep it simple.
Just offering a different opinion *insert shrug here*
I can go on.
I'm still failing to see why that's any odder then the fanfiction.net people or the people drawing the same kind of pics only with anime characters. Just cause I don't condemn it doesn't mean I want to see it. I still don't care, let people like what they like.
Anyway, I agree that SF64 is the best of all of them. It's definitely one of the most solid games of its kind on any platform. But the article sounds more like Cuthbert is holding a personal grudge and that he's not interested in a new Starfox more to spite Miyamoto than anything else. Oh, well. At least SF64 is available through the Virtual Console.
And, Chronoswing, those pictures are just really, really wrong, man.
Also boo at crushed dreams of a good starfox soon
but looking back Starfox is the only space shooter I've ever really enjoyed, so it's got my respect, and so does the creator.
...says wiki.
:]
also, bring on more furry's in my dtoid pleeez.
also dylan is a ps3 spy
Damm you internet.
By the way, this Dylan guy looks like he doesn't even know where he is. Besides, when you HELP CREATE something and go around saying that you CREATED it, it just kind of makes you sound like an ass-hole. Command was boring as hell, by the way.
Besides, he looks like he's the only one who's actually happy in this picture. Wonder why.
and on that note, i'm gonna barrel roll out
Wii sucks.
So basically they're telling us "Starfox has sucked for a long time, and even though we could easily just remake 64 with more levels and give people what they want, wait 10 years".
