They absolutely 100% got Soundtrack of the Year right. No question. Nier has the best videogame soundtrack in many years.

I'ma have to agree with the Nier. It kinda takes me to a place when JRPG's soundtracks made them even more special than they were. And Nier definitey is special in it's own archaic, weird, clunky way.

Nier's soundtrack fucking owns. Lack of Ghost Trick for handheld soundtrack is baffling though, unless it's not being counted because the game didn't come out here until this year (the game and OST were out half a year ago in Japan).

Seriously, Shatter has one of the best soundtracks I've heard. Ever. And that's not just limited to video games.

Was Tower of Heaven really just this past year? Coulda sworn I saw Destructoid proppin' it back in late '09. Still, yes, damn good choice, though I've only heard two "stage" musics, since I only got so far into the game. Much as I love VVVVVV's music, Tower of Heaven prolly does edge it out (and what's more, it's full-on chiptune, IIRC, whereas VVVVVV's had less pixelated sounds mixed in).

I was going in expecting NieR to go unrecognized as usual. I was pleasantly surprised.

Although, I did enjoy FFXIII's soundtrack, I definitely didn't expect it to even be a contender for OST of the year. I think SSF4 would've been my second pick, but that's just me.

Yeah, Shatter is most excellent as well.

Alan wake was my favourite ( licensed and the actual score ) just beautiful music.

I came here to complain about the lack of Nier, but then I realized all was well.

I think PPPPPP for the game VVVVVV should've won for chiptunes, and as said in another comment, Ghost Trick was also very good, since they considered games that came out earlier in Japan (God Eater), Ghost Trick should have been a nomination as well. But nonetheless good choices overall.

For 2010 I don't know, but of all time I'd say Beyond Good and Evil had one of the best albums.

Very happy to see Nier win SOTY. That game had one of the most original, brilliantly designed soundtracks I've seen in awhile, and I highly recommend people to BUY IT, even if you've never played the game. :D

Hells yes. For weeks I would start up Tower of Heaven and just keep the game paused to revel in that amazing music.

I definitely agree with Nier as score of the year (Its not a soundtrack, its a score. There is a difference). I haven't had a chance to hear it in the context of the game, however, but I imagine it must really add to the experience.

An FYI to the commenters below, the parameters for selection generally involve the time that the soundtrack was published (if no soundtrack was published, then time game was published in North America, or if import-only, Japan... you get the idea). Tower of Heaven may be old (discounting the flash remake), but the $1-only digital download of the soundtrack on Bandcamp was July 2010. Hence, it's in coverage.

ON THE FLIPSIDE (this goes to angry commenters like the7k), Shatter was released in July 2009 and had a digital soundtrack release that same month (a L.E. CD version of the soundtrack came in 2010, but we're not counting it again). If you read our 2009 OSVOSTOTY you'll see it plastered all over, as it was indeed an obvious choice.
