Original Prototype vision was 'too huge' boasts Radical photo

As you may remember, Radical's upcoming shape-shifter Prototype was due to be released last year before getting slapped with a delay. According to Radical, however, the extra time has been important, as it's helped the team live up more to the game's original vision, which apparently was too big.

"The extra dev time from last year really was a chance for us to polish, tweak and refine the missions and gameplay mechanics," explains Radical's Tim Bennison. "The original vision for the game was huge, perhaps a little too huge, so the extra time in development has let us realize that vision. We’re really excited to launch Prototype in June – it’s certainly been a big project for the entire company here at Radical."

Prototype is looking like a ridiculous amount of fun. The animation and handling appears a little unrefined, but I'm prepared to forgive a little roughness if it means I can elbow drop tanks and throw screaming human projectiles at helicopters.  Screw anyone who whines about the graphics in lieu of accepting the brilliance of the violence.

While I like it's an open world game, the game itself from the videos I've seen feels a bit generic and just a mindless chore, running around taking down tanks and helicopters and the occasional super mutant.

We do need more open world games but I don't know. Just meh.

Bring on the story. I wanted to know much more about that. Only thing we know currently is "I'm trying to find out what happened to me HURR DURR". Hope there's something more behind that - and the "consume to see memories" thing does sound intriguing.

I guess they realized that Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for GC was the best open-world destruction game ever, because they seemed to incorporate everything that made Hulk awesome in here. Throwing people at helicopters, elbow-dropping tanks, the ability to casually swat away cars and people while running at top speed through the city, being able to piledrive/powerbomb your enemies so you could literally bounce your way through the city...

CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY THIS GAME.

Realistically, the vision is just about always more grand than the final product.

I'm on the fence about this one. To me, it looks like the devs said: "Let's make a game where you're totally invincible and kill everything in sight with your super powers!"

It might be fun for a little while, but one of the best things about rampaging around in games like GTA is that you're *not* some nigh-invincible demigod. You get an actual feeling of tension when the cops are on your tail, and that tension heightens the experience. Your ridiculously overpowered protagonist in Prototype makes the gameplay look rather bland to me.

Should have made it blu-ray only - we like huge.

nuff said.

This game looks great, and if done correctly. can be a definite candidate for GOTY. The only thing I'm worried about is that it might become too repetitive after an hour of gameplay. If Radical can mix things up enough, they will have a winner in Prototype.

You go devs, don't compromise your vision because of time due dates!

Infamous can go die on a curb.

Welcome to every game ever designed.

Seriously, I've never worked on a product where this wasn't the case.

Well, with what they have now, let's hope it's an experience better than just doing tedious missions.

Almost all game developers suffer from having eyes bigger than their stomachs. But soon reality crashes in and time constraints, resources, impossible coding, and unforseen problems forces them to cut out some juicy stuff.

I hope all this development time was enough for them to get rid of any and all possible bugs. Because if I elbow-drop a tank and I end up getting stuck in the ground, that'd be no fun, y'know?

"Vision." I love that word. Wait. No. I don't.

I think with them in open competition with inFamous, one of the titles will end up trying to go to far and end up making a not-so-good game. Unfortunately, I think that's going to be Prototype, but I'm hoping both games are good enough to own right out of the gate.

infamous = teen + story/platforming.

prototype = mature + gameplay/action.

i will get both either way.

This is looking good. I am still on the fence about it but I'm thinking I'll probably end up buying this.

most games start out with 'too big' a vision. it's nothing to boast about. it means you weren't able to fit all your ideas into the game due to some limitation.
