In a recent interview, Kojipro creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana explained why Metal Gear Solid won't be appearing on the recently announced Metal Gear Solid HD collection. According to him, the game's polygon count is far too low and an HD reissue won't mean very much.
"Metal Gear Solid 1 was for the PSone," he said. "It has a very, very low polygon count. While at the time the game was something new and refreshing, just bringing it as is into HD probably wouldn’t have that much meaning to us.
"We’re doing two and three with a certain work flow where the goal is to take that game, preserve it and introduce it to a new generation. We can’t really take that approach with Metal Gear Solid 1 because it’s very dated at this point."
Kojipro said that if his team would ever remake Metal Gear Solid, it would be more of a re-imagining, with an updated story and enhanced gameplay.
This is the bit where you mention Twin Snakes for the GameCube and wonder why the Hell they're not including that.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I hope there is another reason they can't include the first, and they are just using visuals as an excuse
This is the bit where I mention Twin Snakes was a GameCube exclusive that Nintendo has some rights to and wonder why the Hell you didn't think of that.
If anything it would be cool to see MGS1 on XBLA though. So that way all 3 would be on xbox.
Keep in mind, a lot of game developers (and this guy certainly strikes me as the type) view themselves as artists. Hell, some of them ARE artists. Most creative types are very protective of their creative endeavors. If they can't make an HD version of MGS1 that they can be proud of that meets their own standards, then calling them stupid certainly isn't going to help.
It's not always about making money. It's not even always about pleasing the gamer. Sometimes, it's about being able to take pride in what you do.
It would sell like hotcakes!!!!
"Making new 3D models and new textures for MGS1 is much harder than just upping the resolution in MGS2 and 3 and calling it a day, and a lot more work than we're willing to make on this cash grab."
And the reason they won't use Twin Snakes is due to the license limbo this game must be in, having been developed by Silicon Knights, published by Nintendo, with the IP owner being Konami.
That's a good point, I mean they would have had to remove all of that before putting it in the collection, and I wonder if there would have also been issues with it being developed by Silicon Knights.
That hope has since dwindled down to simple dreaming.
"Enough money can get past license issues"
Cost vs benefit. At some point it's just more cost-effective to make a new game with that cash.
Besides, they're not simply gonna pay off all the money they expect to make off this release in getting the rights for just one game, especially when they probably don't intend to spend much money making it happen to begin with.
Yeah, because new generations LOVE missing out on the first game in a series.
Why not just include a non-updated PSone port, then? Put a sticker on the box and call it a bonus and nobody would complain...
remade by the same voice cast.... does not compute?
Since both were changed from the original which I have played so many times. I just about memorized all the dialogue.
I know this is a personal thing though. Had I never played MGS I'd be fine with it.
That's what I read anyhow.
At the end of the day, MGS3 and MGS2 still look like PS2 games. Mario still looks like Mario, Sonic still looks like Sonic, and Snake still looks like Snake. People still play and enjoy those games because they have fun. MGS1 is a FUN game and should be in the goddamn collection. Same with Silent Hill 1.
Hell, I was just trying out both games on the PC and with the higher resolution, they look great. Just make them so that they aren't a blurry mess on our big TVs and its all good. But no... You can't do that, can you? Because the real problem here is the fact that you are still making money off both those games on PSN and your future cross platform Xperia Play/ Android bullshit.
Hell, Ninja Gaiden on Xbox had all 3 NES games on it, and it wasn't even a damn collection.
Exactly! That's what I read, too.
Frankly, I was very disappointed with Twin Snake's changes. The voice actors banded together to redo all of the audio, only for the cutscene director to turn a character you relate to into an over the top characature just as ridiculous as the enemies you're facing. The player connection in the original was so strong because Snake, despite being a super soldier, acted within the realm of believability; you could project yourself as the protagonist surrounded by literal monsters, and you have to defeat them through only determination and hardwork. When Snake can dodge missles and flip across doorways without being heard, there's no connection, and hence no sense of accomplishment when your super hero defeats the super villain.
Also i've played the Twin Snakes and i don't want that bastard child in my collection!
If they change the voice cast i'll be upset though.
If someone really wants to play it, a used PS1 and copy of the game isn't exactly going to break the bank.
Alternatively, they could port it to every system on the planet, some several times over, with only very minimal tweaks each time. Because we all love what that has done for the Final Fantasy series, right?
The MSX games, those are vital to the story yet have been played the least.
that woulda been my excuse.
Keep in mind, he didn't just "dodge" the missile, he did a backward somersault, jumped off of the passing missile for a boost, then used that boost to fire his own missile at Liquid's Hind D while about 20 feet in the air. I'm willing to suspend disbelief in Metal Gear games, but holy shit, that was just too much.
I have the game on my PS3 as a downloaded PS1 game anyway because I can play games with or without the totally amazing graphics of this generation's games, but for them to back out because the graphics won't be fancy High Definition and people might get butt hurt about that really is irritating.
Oh and Twin Snakes was a Gamecube exclusive, so I'm sure there's some rights business to that.
Inca Trail
And they'll use the argument that "the gamers asked for it anyway, after we said it wouldn't be possible".
It's all mkt strategy!
