Original Mass Effect composer composing Mass Effect 2 photo

Don’t expect too much raw Theremin or Eigenharp action in Mass Effect 2. Jack Wall is returning to his role as composer for the series’ follow-up game.

BioWare and EA made it official earlier last afternoon, announcing that Wall will resume his musical work where the last game left off. The official word is that the soundtrack will feature almost three hours of music, the kind in which should excite those familiar with the first game’s soundtrack. (Nerds.)

Wall’s work is great -- the original ME soundtrack is the only I’ve ever bothered to purchase, and it looks like ME2’s will be offered as a download as well. Soon. According to the press release, the ME2 soundtrack will hit “digital retailers” on January 19, 2010. Nice.

The ending better feature the music of the 'Faunts'!

But this is great news.

the mass effect soundtrack fucking sucked, its not that it was nessesarily bad, its just pretty much non existent, i completed mass effect when i pinched it in the steam sale and despite playing it for more than 30 hours i can remember any of the soundtrack except me thinking at one point how forgettable this soundtrack is. Commandos 2, Goldeneye and timesplitters 2 have the best video game soundtracks of all time. Jack Wall and his minimalist electro ambient watery modernist bullshit can suck it

Anjo is right. I firmly believe that they should keep M4 pt 2 by Faunts as the end them for all the games, similar to how they use 'Extreme Ways' for all of the Bourne movies. About as perfect a marriage of licensed music and a video game I've seen in a long, long way.

As for the actual score; good. We're not getting a Blade Runner 2 and 3 any time soon, so I'm happy as a clam that we at least get new soundtracks that perfectly evoke the feelings of that film.

I respectfully disagree with X3Ent3nte a FUCKING lot!

I loved the soundtrack. As for the soundtracks "non-existence" I do believe it's called ambience. It was there it just wasn't, like, MJOLNIR then or Super Mario Theme there. It wasn't the most important part of the game by far and I quite dug it.

@X3Ent3nte

BUT MINIMALIST ELECTRO AMBIENT WATERY MODERNIST BULLSHIT IS MY FAVORITE GENRE?!

Also, you're really going to cite 'Goldeneye'? It's an entire soundtrack made up of remixes of the same song. Bond theme + drum beat + adjusted tempo = every level.

+1 more for Faunts - M4 Part 2

I put that song on repeat for days on end after I beat the game. Not to mention, the music video is fucking bad-ass!

@X3Ent3nte: what Xzyliac said.

ME2:CE should come with the soundtrack.

The first one was awesome, I'd love to pick up this one..

Loved the last soundtrack. Look forward to this. Favourite track has got to be the music for the star map.

I dug it. Reminded me of old-school sci-fi tunes.

Yup, I will be getting this one too. The first one was SO GOOD!! Tunes like Uncharted Worlds and the Normandy theme are imprinted in my DNA now.

That's fantastic. I loved the original. It really grooved with the whole space feel, I felt.

That's good. When I die, will I hear "pam bam bam bam bam bam bam bam - pom pom pom pom pom pom pom pom"?

I see only good things in this decision much to X3Ent3nte's chagrin.

The soundtrack was perfect for setting the mood in the first game. Especially certain pieces towards the end of the game.

And while I'm at it... +1 for Faunts. ME is the only game I refuse to skip the credits for because I want to hear the whole song. :)

The soundtrack sucked in ME1. It's also gonna suck in ME2 apparently. It was electronic and that should appeal to me, but it was just mediocre.

I wonder if the people who didn't like the soundtrack to ME1 also didn't like the soundtrack to Blade Runner?

Hell, I wonder if those people have even heard of Blade Runner.

I don't get the Vangelis' bladerunner OST connection with ME1. ME1 music was very forgettable. Vangelis' bladerunner OST was a master piece and I own all the collections plus the newly re-released the 2 DISC set.

i often left the opening screen for the game running in the background just for that tasty song.
mass effect and portal tie for favourite soundtracks (and are both up there for favourite games too i suppose).

@whateverthismeanstoyou:
there is a very, very obvious connection between blade runner and mass effect ost. i believe it was best described above as 'MINIMALIST ELECTRO AMBIENT WATERY MODERNIST BULLSHIT'. that being said, i think vangelis falls a bit more into the 'dorky outdated synth-opera' category...though the prologue music still gets me every time.

I actually turned the ME1 music off because it was lame to the point of being distracting. Well, he'd better pull something more awesome together for ME2. I have plenty of synthy SciFi music that is better than his, and I play it while I play ME.

Honestly, for all of the talk of minimalist electro bullshit, etc, a lot of people seem to forget that Mass Effect had some great themes that were presented in a more orchestral manner. The Spectre Induction, for example. The use of scaled down ambient music as the majority of the score made the sudden rise in Shepard or Saren's themes in the midst of battle all the more powerful.

So in other words, Mass Effect 2 won't have music.

Wait a minute, you say the difference between Vangelis' Blade Runner score and Mass Effect's was that you didn't like it? How is that an argument?

I think what people are interpretting as fogettable I'm feeling as understated. I get such a great feeling from the score which drags me into the feeling of the universe. Then, after reading the books, you can understand the kind of feeling they're going for even more. Vangelis' score is full of, for lack of better word in my brain, emotion while the Mass Effect score feels a lot more lonesome, cold, not sad lonely but an emptiness. That space isn't a wonderland of romance but a cold, dark and hostile place.

ME's soundtrack it pretty good, if not a bit stereotypical of Western games' sountracks. Basically it works very well in the context your in, but you'd be hard pressed to enjoy it if it had to stand on its own two feet and didn't have the game supporting it.

Honestly, how many western soundtracks can you hum along with, in comparison with eastern ones? Halo's opening chant and Castle Crashers is about all I can think of.

@Rosseh Not everything that a composer makes is of the same quality. Then again... I can't remember a single piece of music out of Blade Runner. Maybe it "blended perfectly" into the background, maybe it was simply unmemorable.

Either way, I hope the ME2's music is better than ME1. I think that we can all agree on that, no matter how much we liked ME1.

The Witcher had an excellent soundtrack for a western game.

Also this version of "Vigil" is amazing....

Hmm. No offense meant to anyone who thinks differently, but I thought that the end credits song from the original game was sort of... um, bad. I liked the original score well enough, but if BioWare uses that song (or another one by the same band) to end Mass Effect 2, it will... okay, probably not kill, but at least harm my end-of-game buzz.

Now, if BioWare really knew what they were doing, they'd use Failure's "Another Space Song" in the ME2 credits. (Even the title's perfect!) But after that Jared Leto tripe they subjected us to in Dragon Age, I'll gladly settle for anything that doesn't make me vomit in my mouth.
