Original Killzone coming to PlayStation Network Jan 24 photo

The original Killzone is scheduled to infiltrate the PlayStation Network on January 24, in an announcement that came out of nowhere. It will be a straight port, not a revamped HD version, and it'll cost you $9.99.

Killzone is one of the most famous examples of dangerous pre-release hype. The PS2 exclusive was labeled a "Halo Killer" almost immediately, and while the final product was pretty good, the failure to live up to ludicrous expectations did some damage to its reputation.

Guerrilla would see similar pre-release controversy with Killzone 2, when a pre-rendered E3 trailer was presented as in-game footage. Needless to say, that didn't go over well, but the game itself was still excellent.

I haven't played the original since it released in 2004, but I'd love to give it another whirl. Playable characters voiced by Sean Pertwee? You bet I'm all about that.

I thought it was the media that labeled it the "Halo Killer" not Sony

I have fond memories of the first one, The first game I played where I really noticed a sprinting mechanic.

I wasn't that exposed to the internet during those times, well more like gaming side of the internet, so the hype didn't get me and I actually loved the original killzone to no end, and I can still enjoy a playthrough or two. Consider it a buy from my side.

I love Killzone 2 and 3, but I thought the original was awful.

Awesome, Killzone one is my favorite Killzone game. Except for the fact that it has not aged well at all. I liked the multiple characters with unique abilities. Also the characters in the game were great. Their bickering was always enjoyable. I wish they'd remake it using the Kz3 engine, that would be awesome.

Media and Sony fans labeled it the "Halo Killer", Sony didn't really go with that till they decided Killzone 2 was a good idea (and it was Sony fans and the media -again- that took that too far)

This game was okay, but it was severely lacking. I was honestly surprised that Sony was going to bother with a sequel, let alone two, and make it such a thing to fuss over the series at all, cause this one seemed like such a flop.

"Guerrilla would see similar pre-release controversy with Killzone 2, when a pre-rendered E3 trailer was presented as in-game footage. Needless to say, that didn't go over well,"

Funny how Sony has a long standing tradition of lying to its customers at E3. No trolling, just an observation on how they stepped it up a bit last year with all those bonus' promised that people only got because they noticed they were missing and bitched about it.

Will they also include the multiplayer? I remember having a lot of fun with that.

The original Killzone was great, with the exception of some graphical and audio glitches. If they can iron those out (ideally I would like to see it at 60FPS) then it's an instant purchase for me.

Still got my old copy sitting around. I was hoping that they would have done a HD update to it and fixed some of the wrost problems it had. If they would just give it a constant frame rate anf fix the graphics pop in I'd be happy to play it again. I hope killzone 4 brings back Sean Pertwee's Hakka.

Very nice, cant wait to get this. I loved it however moving and aiming was total shit compared to Halo, I only heard that people where calling it the Halo killer almost a year after getting it. This seems to be the one game where it's negative reception was the fault of the fans overhyping it instead of the company (looking at you Peter Molyneux)

Too bad its not an HD version. I love the original Killzone, but it looks pretty goddamn awful these days. It's cool that they are putting it out there at least.

I love Killzone 2 & 3, so I might be interested in checking out the origins of this series. I remember the hype at the time of it's release and everyone being disappointed though...

This PS2 classic releases on the PS3 is pissing me off. Clearly the emulation software is in place to play PS2 games on the PS3.

So why can't I play my 60+ PS2 game library of them on the PS3? Why do I have to shell out $10 fucking dollars to play games I already bought for $50?

Someone please tell me the reason.

I'm talking about beyond the greed.
Is there a reason, other than greed, that I can't pop in Dragon Quest 8 and play it? Or is Sony truly just being a chlamydia riddled cunt here?

Because the hardware to run PS2 discs was only in a few PS3 models and has since been discontinued with the system?

Not to mention that if you send in your backwards compatible unit for repair they take it out without telling you.

I'll probably pick this up eventually, considering I never played it the first time around. Would have been more exciting if it was an HD remake, though.

The killzone 2 trailer controversy kinda solidified my disappointment in this generation of consoles. The leap to HD just never felt as great as the leap between ps1 & n64 to last gen consoles. The ps2, gamecube, and xbox advancements were much more grand and awe inspiring.

While I personally didn't like Killzone 2, the first game was a steaming pile. Not only did it not live up to hype, but it's level design was disgusting and it's AI almost non-existant.

I guess this is cool for people who really care about the series, but I'd honestly say to skip this like the plague. Killzone 1 is better left to memory.

I don't get it. The original killzone is terrible, but people are acting like Killzone 2 and 3 are "good". I am laughing uncontrollably.

@ASDX I enjoyed 2 a lot. The difference between the game and the trailer they showed didn't bother me, I liked it for what it was. My only complaint was the heavy character movement. But I'm glad my enjoyment of it amuses you.

Never played the first one. Thought 2, & 3 were awesome games. I'd have considered getting a HD'd up version, but playing PS2 games on a decent sized LCD TV just looks nasty, so I think I'll be giving this a miss.

I liked KZ1. Decent (for a shooter) story, excellent voice acting (by Sean Pertwee) and it actually felt like a frontline slog rather than just running and gunning.

However, Rico. Eurgh. Hopefully KZ4 will have an unlockable mode where you can just make him commit seppuku over and over.

I have the PS3 CECHE01MG with backwards compatibility, and the KZ1 disc runs a lot smoother than it did on the actual ps2.

I enjoyed the first game back in the day, but I did try replaying in 2009 and it does not hold up even for nostalgias’ sake. It would be an interesting remake using modern mechanics and rendering, but it probably would not pay for itself.

Only hard-core fans of the first game should try this because you need a thick set of rose-colored glasses even as a fan. I’m actually shocked they went for a straight port with this since it is a first party game worthy of a little late in life TLC.
