Square Enix, seemingly encouraged by the huge download numbers for Final Fantasy VII, has revealed that the PSOne version of the original Final Fantasy is its latest revisited classic on the PlayStation Network. Final Fantasy: Origins made an appearance on the Japanese PSN today, though currently there is no word on when North America or Europe can get their grotty hands on it.
Final Fantasy is to Square Enix what Resident Evil is to Capcom, being that the original game has been released, remade and re-released roughly 800,000,000 times. One more release isn't going to hurt, and it's an encouraging sign that Square Enix will continue to support the PSN with its back catalogue of awesome PSOne games. Could Final Fantasy IX make an appearance in the future? I certainly hope that my favorite FF game is on the cards.
The PS3 really has become the greatest PSX I've ever owned.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
not sure about anyone else but I could play games with graphics like that all day, to hell with huge expensive CGI-laden 3d projects
you should have bought a 60gb one. so sick of the bc whining.
if your a gamer, you should know that by now. oh yea, ALL PS3's are PSone backwards compatible. PS2 BC is reliant upon the EmotionChip which was removed to cut on costs btw.
i love being able to replay FFVII on my PS3! i was about to buy a disc copy on ebay but they are over $40 a pop, so the $10 is a bargain and i can play it on my psp phat too.
keep releasing those PSOne on the PSN, its easy money. :)
Yeah the first header was the ff1 remake on the psp, this header is from ff2.
All PS3's play PS1 games.
Both were sold remakes though. Much more coherent than the predecessors.
Okay, you can't go wrong with box art.
Uhm, you can you play PS1 games on every PS3. The backwards compatibility only concerns PS2 games. Know your hardware.
No whining from me! I got what I have (120GB) and that's great for me!
But if I were to agree with Jim Sterling's "greatest PSX I've ever owned", I would have to have a bc compatible one, because I think the PS2 has an amazing game library.
So far, my PS2 Slim is the greatest PSX I've ever owned.
Anyway, I'm excited about these PSOne rereleases just because it will allow me to put them on my PSP! If they release FFVIII and FFIX on PSN, I'll have the first nine Final Fantasy games in portable form! I've found that long RPGs are perfect for portable systems, just because its easier to play and get through them when its in a "play whenever, wherever" form.
Forgot to add this in the last comment.
Don't be such an ass. Tubantic wasn't whining at all.
I honestly had no idea all PS3's were PS1 backward compatible!?!
Guess who's starting a new game of ... holy crap, so I can play X-Com on my PS3?!?
Re-evaluating greatest PSX rankings...
It's the cover of FF Origins. I am not changing it again.
-kthxbye
That's what happened when I saw the header.
Header is wrong:P
I have this for GBA, gonna keep it there. ...well, and also I lack a PS3, so uh..yeah.
Also, why are Black Mage and Fighter fighting? I thought they were on the same side...
If this is their idea of an HD remix, no thanks...
