You buy retail but you are required to use origin to unlock it and or patch the game, something valve did with half life 2. Steam was shit and herald as a shitty thing to do to gamers. EA is just trying to copy that, you have to start some where I guess. Flip side however is steam does it better they should improve on the idea not try to copy the time line exactly. Cock blocking sales on steam is lame.
Not happy about this but I don't think it will prevent me from buying it. I'd probably get the retail box hoping that it can be added into ste with the key later on.
I see a lot of people bitching about Origins and yet I haven't heard a single bad thing about it, yet. Just people complaining. You don't even have to have it running while you're playing your game so how could it possibly be a big deal?
I love Steam and I have a billion games on it.. but EA's customer service is actually much > then Valve's.

I don't know why everyone is complaining aslong as the game is good I don't care,BFbc2 is on steam , but uses its own login and own friends system, sure its a hassle but the game is great so I can forgive them. boycotting this game for something as stupid as which digital retailer it is in is only going to hurt the devolper DICE not EA.
Sucks for DICE. I hope it doesn't effect them too much, I love their games. I wouldn't mind playing with Origin instead of Steam for Battlefield 3 if it weren't for the fact that Origin wont even let me friggin start my games up. I updated my library with Mass Effect 2 and Bad Company 2 and I can't even start them up with Origin because it crashes on start. Though, with the retail disks, they work perfectly fine. I'm going with the retail version of Battlefield 3.

Sigh. If I've learned anything about PC gaming over the last couple of years, it's that I only buy my games through Steam. Yes, Steam is a big, sometimes-clunky, often-times overbearing behemoth, but having a consistent friends list, a consistent launch platform, and access to a disc-free library on any computer I choose from a single source is just too good to pass up. I bought DA:O on disc, and immediately regretted it. I just re-bought Relic's Dawn of War on steam just so I wouldn't have to dig my CDs out of the closet. I will not be getting Battlefield 3, as much as I want the game, until EA stops being a bag of dicks and lets me get it on the same platform the rest of my entire library is on.

Jim Sterling already explained my reasons why I dislike this Origin idea. I already have a Steam, Xboxlive, and PSN account. I don't want another one with my personal information on it in the hands of a company who doesn't seem to have the consumer's best interest at heart.
Why this is bad:
- Firstly, not everyone lives in the US or Canada, etc, a lot of people do not have access to retail copies, and if they do, they are marked at least 60% over their USD price.
- Secondly, have you even used Origin? They had some great deals last winter, so I gave it a try and bought Bad Company 2 and Shift 2 as well. It's nice that you don't need to run Origin to run your games, but other than that, the interface is TERRIBLE, it is buggy and it doesn't manage automatic updating either. It's also slow, and very badly designed.
Steam gets its loyalty because it's an awesome platform, giving MW3 free reign over Steam is only shooting yourself on the foot. This is a stupid decision and you know it.

Well, since the disc PC version will probably require installation of Origin to play, I guess I will not be buying this game. Too bad EA. Just when I was going to give you another chance, you go and do this.
@Daxelman: Why would you convert for that reason? Console games are getting DRM now as well with "online passes" and such. I expect to see this type of thing head to consoles soon as well. Digital Distribution happens to be big on the PC platform right now, and not on console.

So people are naturally worried that BF3 might follow the same trend as those two.

All other digital distributors for Battlefield 3 merely sells you a code that you have to redeem on Origin to download an update and DLC capable version of the game.
People who buy the boxed copy of Battlefield 3 will also need to bind their copy to Origin as all PC games nowadays rely on updates and of course multiplayer.
Plugging in your service to games is considered sound business practice since that's how Steamworks works for non-Valve games. It is EA's history of bad customer treatment that makes me not want anything to do with them.

I would like to be able to play BF3 with my friends on steam, but then again.. I don't like playing many games with them outside of CS. There are so many fanboys on steam that won't play something if it isn't on steam, it makes me laugh.. Honestly I am pretty happy without them, most of the people on steam are INCREDIBLY immature, I couldn't tell one from the next with how cookie-cutter, overly generic their play-style and comments are. Bottom line is that BF3 will make millions without steam, and either the steam fan boys will give up their pre-teen grudge and buy the game, or BF3 will be better off without them.
