I'll pour one out for all those devalued IPs anyway.
It's a decent sale, but I just don't want Origin anywhere on my computer. That, and if I don't play these games for a year or two, they magically disappear from my purchased games.
Flashes of Gamespot sometimes at Destructiod
What next, 10 years from now color layout the same but for some reason site is harder to navigate
Crap, that most assuredly will happen, happens to all websites apparently
I u.derstamd that, but look at the first couple of comments on this article, and u will see what I mean. Everyone is so damn quick to jump down their throats, and so quick to belittle the fact that they are doing something good right?
My guess is they were trying to spook developers into jumping onto the Origin(hallowed are the Ori) bandwagon. When that failed to result in the desired effect..... they went and did the very thing they condemned Steam for.
Stay classy EA..... also stay off my harddrive >,<
Never underestimate the scope and capacity of hypocrisy. It's what keeps the world turning.

The thing is, people already didn't like EA, regardless of this almost comical hypocrisy. Sure, it's a "good" thing for consumers that games are made more affordable -- but can you really expect people to openly congratulate and praise the company, when so recently they were condemning the practice of sales as harmful to the industry? The implication is that either they did NOT think it was harmful and they were just lying to make other companies look bad, or they STILL think it's harmful and would rather harm the industry than suffer a sales drop. Yes, they are taking a step in a less horrible direction -- but they couldn't even manage to do it without illustrating a complete lack of integrity.
Admittedly, "sticking to their guns" would be pointless if it meant never having sales, and it's not like their ridiculous ideas about harming IPs and devaluing games ever carried any weight. It would have been better if EA just stayed out of the philosophizing business altogether.
*checks pc for origins software. Finds none*
Not too good, apparently.
Also, I don't like EA or whatever. Can I have my internet points please?
prices on old software is one thing. Training your customers to expect fire sale prices shortly after release is another thing entirely, and likely what the quote was pointed towards. Mind you I am in no way complaining.
Try harder EA.
On the other, you're ALSO making the statement here that these sales do NOT impact the price expectations and value of the franchise in the future as new titles get released.
Methinks two warring philosophies cannot coexist... oh wait, it's Jim. Fuck all if he knows what the hell his stance is from week to week.
Because sale or not, EA went on the record saying that these "going out of business" sales of 75%+ were essentially toxic to the industry. Then not a week later do they have an 80%+ off sale on a bunch of games ......
@dtomek
When was the last time you saw ANY distributor, physical or digital ever have a 75-90% off sale within a month or so of a games launch. Usually those come years down the line, sometimes rarely as holiday sales.
The few times I have seen sales shortly after a games launch (usually like 15-30% max) it has been because sales have been ABYSMAL.
So maybe it isn't that they are conditioning their customers to expect a sale shortly after launch. Maybe it is more that they are self conditioning to think that every game under the sun regardless of actual value deserves the rubber stamped $59.99 MSRP.
I know everyone thinks their game is a special snowflake .... but if it doesn't cut it, charge less, sell more!
"We won't be doing that. Obviously they think it's the right thing to do after a certain amount of time. I just think it cheapens your intellectual property. I know both sides of it, I understand it. If you want to sell a whole bunch of units, that is certainly a way to do that, to sell a whole bunch of stuff at a low price. The gamemakers work incredibly hard to make this intellectual property, and we're not trying to be Target. We're trying to be Nordstrom. When I say that, I mean good value - we're trying to give you a fair price point, and occasionally there will be things that are on sale you could look for a discount, just don't look for 75 percent off going-out-of-business sales."
Reading comprehension, might want to look into it.
I read the article, A sale is still a sale and people should be glad there is a sale.
saying we don't do sales like Steam does them does not mean they can't have the occasional sale on some older games making them dirt cheap.
So you're OK with hypocrisy? Alright then, good to know. I'm sure EA loves trimming its sheep. Clearly you do not realize that the article isn't talking solely about new games, but all games in general, recent to the not so recent.
Let me also go on the record and say here that I won't ever try to sell you a bridge.
