Last week marked the launch of Orbitron: Revolution, an Xbox Live Indie Game developed by ex-Capcom Vancouver and Electronic Arts employees. To quickly sum it up, the game is a scrolling shooter in the same vein as Defender, with a style inspired by the likes of futuristic racing series Wipeout.

As many of you may well know from first-hand experience, it can be rough out there on the Xbox Live Indie service. There's a limited number of three-dollar games I feel are worthy of sincere recommendation, so a shout out to Orbitron feels decidedly worth giving.

It's unclear if the platform will ever be truly viable -- I suspect it largely won't, outside of small teams with very high outputs -- but supporting studios like Firebase Industries certainly won't hurt the cause.

"but supporting studios like Firebase Industries certainly won't hurt the cause."

Agreed. Sometimes I buy XBLAI games for $1 even if I know I won't get around to it for a while, to support these dudes.

I was just thinking of this game the other day wondering when it was releasing but couldn't remember its name. Thank you! I remember this video from a few months back and didn't even realize it wasn't a full XBLA release, I remember it looking so polished. Going to need to snag this after I finish my classes this semester as a nice little bday present to myself (aka a lazy afternoon of beer and old school arcade shoot 'em up goodness).

The indie games are always worth looking at. Even if you don't actually buy anything, it's still interesting to see what kind of stuff they come up with.

I think I downloaded the trial and never got around to playing it.

Which is pretty much the entirety of my experience with XBLIG. I've paid for, maybe 3. I wish they'd at least let indie games have a footprint in my history so people (and me) could know/remember that I played it.

I have dozens of trials for all the weird Japanese games on the service, too.

I got the demos of this and Elfsquad7 (tis the season) just yesterday, interesting to see more professionals, rather than hobbyists and indies, using the service.

(or, this isn't new and I just missed it till now)

Anyways, gotta actually play it now. :P Got the demo off xbox.com.
