Orange Box to steal top Metacritic ranks from Halo 3 and BioShock? photo

It's still early, but Valve's bargain-of-the-year bundle The Orange Box looks like it could overtake two of the highest rated games ever on Metacritic: Halo 3 and BioShock.

The Xbox 360 version of The Orange Box (containing of the full versions of Half-Life 2 and Episodes One and Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal) is currently ranked with a metascore of 98 out of 100 on Metacritic, topping Halo 3's 94 and BioShock's 96.

The only game currently topping The Orange Box on Metacritic is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, coming in at a 99 out of 100

It deserves it, although it's almost unfair to factor in so many good games as one package hehe.

I would love to see each separate game get reviewed. It's basically like rating 5 separate Zelda games or GTA titles and grading them as a whole. I wanna see them as separate scores, personally.

I bought it last night and will play (and surely love) them all, but still. IT'S NOT ONE GAME! DON'T SCORE IT AS ONE! It's a package, sheesh.

That's not his cheek talking, it's a very small zit with its own separate identity. Let's hope it doesn't pull a Family Guy and try to kill Gordon.

I don't see how Orange Box is getting all this attention. It's just a repackaging of the dated (and not that great, imo) Half-Life 2 w/ episodes, a tech demo(Portal, albeit a cool demo) and a good but limited multiplayer game. I have it but I wouldn't have rated it above 85%.

I don't think any games should get over 9.5. It just seems too high, being so close to 100.

Portal deserves the accolades and TF2 as well, so far I'm not seeing what's so special about HL2, just a very mediocre FPS with a good story and a pretty physics engine.

I guess their reviewing the entire thing, I would prefer reviews of each game on their merits not a "OMG 5 GAMES IN ONE DISK" *fapfapfapfapfap* because there is no fucking way that a 2004 game with shitty vehicle sequences deserves anything better than a 7.

It totally deserves it, too. HL2 and the 2 episodes are brilliant, Portal will blow your fucking mind, and TF2... never have I logged so many hours into an online FPS (I usually hate FPS games)

Half-Life 2 alone rapes Halo 3, so this is no surprised. Also, as amazing as BioShock is, I'd have to give the nod to Half-Life 2 as well. BioShock and Half-Life 2 are amazing games. Halo 3 is an overrated pile of shit just like the other two were.

Old games just need re-reviewed or put on a different list for that year. Newer games get reviewed highly only because sometimes the game in review does something that hasn't been done before.

Halo 3 = generic FPS pile of dogshit for console gamers.

Guess what - 8 hours of single player hardly qualifies as anything near Epic.. and theres much better multiplayer FPS' out there.

For example - TF2.

You don't really understand the concept of Metacritic, do you?

It almost doesn't seem fair. 5 great games in one package? Should be illegal. Until I own a copy.

i guess i'm about the only person in the world who finds single player FPS's to be boring.

i'd give HL1 a 90 - it broke a lot of new ground and was the first good storyline in an FPS game maybe ever.

HL2 was an amazing demo for the physics engine, the story and game other than the graphics and physics bored the hell out of me
HL2 ep1 and ep2 are just more of the same. more hallways. more enemies. more walking and jumping and crawling. but nothing NEW.

portal is another great demo of a concept - but the "game" is a long tutorial, and 1 hour of escape that should have been 5 minutes. the final boss is cool though.

and tf2, another great idea (the stylized graphics) but they are already making it suck (limited server cvars, limited server filters) so that all the servers are exactly the same... and after 100 hours i'm so bored of it i don't want to play it any more.

how do these games score 9.5? i guess the numbers start at 8/10?

I guess I'll be the one olive branch type and point out that the 360 has (at least in the eyes of aggregate critic scores) gotten 3 of the best games out there in the last couple months. And with the stuff still to come out this fall, it is a good time to be a gamer.
