Orange Box 2: Back in the Habit photo

Doug Lombardi and Gabe Newell have recently been chattering about a few things of interest to the many Valve fans out there, chief among them the future of Counter-Strike and even the slim possibility of an Orange Box 2 coming out.

With Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and Portal 2 already on the cards, it seems that Valve could possibly be in the same situation it was when the first Orange Box was unleashed -- having several games coming out at once that work great as part of a compilation. Valve has certainly not confirmed that a new Orange Box is planned, or even a heavily entertained thought right now, but seeds have been sewn for gossip.

First off, Lombardi explained the lack of a new Counter-Strike by claiming that "We will never abandon Counter-Strike. It's a little bit unfair to compare Counter-Strike, I think, to your classic game that's gonna have these sequels. It looks a little bit more like an MMO where it's constantly [being updated]." Valve's marketing man then went on to share the possibilities of a CS2. "There's a big question between, do we go start over from scratch and build this whole new game, do we do something that looks more like Team Fortress 2 that is rooted in the old game but has a ton of new stuff, or do we just sort of take everything that's new that we've released and put that out in a new box."

Gabe Newell expressed doubts over Counter-Strike appearing in any Orange Box-style package because he feels the game wouldn't be a "good fit." He did, however, make a wry statement that is going to send fans into a whirlwind of online shouting: "If I get 15,000 emails from customers in response to this interview telling me 'Of course it should be in [a new Orange Box],' then of course we'll pay attention to that."

You heard him. 15,000 emails is the target and I THINK WE CAN DO IT GUYS! GO GO GO TEAM!

Putting Counterstrike in the Orange Box 2 would possibly allow it to be made available to console gamers. Combining the communities of Counterstrike and Xbox Live would create a stupidity so potent it would tear a whole in the universe that would negate the existence of videogames as a whole.

As long as they fire the intern/clerk/idiot/janitor who did the art on the current Orange Box i'll be happy...

This new one needs the Half-Life logo at least! And head crabs! And zombies on horses! And fifty crowbars! And it should be covered in that awful 3D plastic stuff that changes the image when you mov it around and makes a funny sounds when you drag your finger across it! ZZzzzzzzzzeeppppppp

I don't think the stupidity of CS players migrating over to the 360 or PS3 is that much of an issue, the more enthusiastic CS players will stick to the PC so we'll just get the usual bunch of trouble makers as opposed to a new breed.
I am fully in favor of having CS:Source on consoles, I absolutely love Counter-Strike but can't play it anymore because 1. My PC sucks and 2. My wireless network and CS:S don't get along at all.
CS:S on consoles with keyboard and mouse support would go down a treat with me, but hey -- I'm just one man with the ability to send 10 e-mails at most before becoming bored.

Counter-Strike was already on the original xbox and playable on live and a black hole was not created... we should be okay!

Personally, I don't much care about "fit." You wanna toss Left4Dead in Orange Box 2? Be my guest! Pack as much awesome shit into a $60 box as possible and sign me up! Some sort of similarity between the games is nice, but I'm certainly willing to forgo that for as much quality gaming as my dollar can buy.

I see what Gabe means with the whole "fitting" into the Orange Box and I think I agree. Counter-Strike and other projects like left for dead I think should go into maybe like a "Black Box" with more dark content.

I just can't believe Valve hasn't brought CounterStrike Source to the 360 yet. I would think porting it wouldn't be all that much trouble and they could easily sell it as a standalone product, especially if they did so at a discount price. Orange Box was $60 with 3 games, they could get away with charging $40 for CounterStrike.

I would love to see an Orange Box 2 with Episode Three, Portal II, and The Ship.

Fuck CS2 in the ear, give us Left 4 Dead as our multiplayer game instead for the next O-Box. I'd pay $50 for Ep3, Portal 2, L4D, and would love it if they just threw in Half Life 1 Source for good measure.

Orange Box is the only reason Episode 2 became a viable purchase , as they're charging WAY too much for Episode 2 as a stand alone title.

Gaben@valve.com

There's so many better multiplayer titles for Source than CS, the vast majority of them free Source Mods.
Now, Valve collecting the "Best of the best" titles among Source Mods and including them as bonuses in the Orange Box 2nd coming, that I could get behind. Could you imagine Zombie Panic! Source, Zombie Master, Minerva, Hidden: Source, and Fistful of Frags all included? Heads would explode.

Jetsetlemming is right. CS is popular I'm sure, and I enjoy playing it, but it's fanbase that primarily consists of internet pariahs needs to be kept out of my OBox.

If the Orange Box 2 includes OB1 with no corresponding option for current owners of the OB1 (and no, that retarded gift license thing does NOT count), Valve shall be made to suffer greatly for their transgressions >:(

I'm against Counterstrike's inclusion. If I were them, I'd put HL: Episode 3, Portal 2, Team Fortress 3, and an updated version of the original Half-Life. Valve wanted to put HL1 on the first Orange Box, but there was no room. I really hope they do it, though.

Valve should really put DOD:Source into some sort of coloured box. I mean, I really don't want to pay the full price for it but getting it in some sort of bundle would be nice. A bundle with Portal 2 and 3. And Half Life 4.

Okay, everyone who wants Left 4 Dead on Orange Box 2 is not thinking clearly. Left 4 Dead will be done a long time before The Orange Box 2's other games (which should at least include Half-Life 2: Episode 3). So, if you want it in OB2, then you're essentially holding back the game's release date.
