Its a crappy practice, but in the case of SFXT, we don't know the conditions or reasons those characters are not available in the base version. Maybe, just maybe, they're not fully tested yet. Given we already knew they'd be in the Vita version, I doubt Capcom had any plans to charge for them.
If they do charge for it, THEN people can complain about it, because then Capcom - just like Bioware - is assuming their customers are stupid (though to be fair in Bioware's case, many of them are, since they've defended this shit for years now).
Four dollar DLC doesn't sound too harsh, but still, its Day One DLC and shouldn't be separate from the game.
But 4 bucks kind of throws me off, would have expected it to be free, as a incentive to buy it on 360.
Not you can buy it and know it's exclusive, sort of loses it's appeal that way.
eh, Don't really care which day the DLC comes out on. If I like the game then maybe I'll get the DLC, but probably not
Now there's a crazy concept. If something is worth the cost to you, you buy it. If it's not, you don't. Out-fucking-standing.
@TSP
I'm fairly certain it is as much about misleading us as anything else. I've watched the videos and the characters in question appear to be finished, or at least very close to being finished. The notion that any changes made down the line could still constitute DLC when it's clear you'd only be downloading patches for these characters more or less is crossing the line. The content is there, it had to have been there before the game was sent to cert (Bioware claims their DLC was made between cert and release, for context), the only thing that is in question at this point is balancing, which again would constitute a patch and certainly not downloadable content.
They pretended like it didn't exist, and people found it. They said there was no sound, people found that. They said there were no skins, and people found them. They said there was no move sets, and people uploaded videos of them playing as these characters with extensive move sets. It's clear Capcom didn't want people to know the truth of the matter, and the only thing they haven't fallen flat on their face on is the balance issue, which is pretty untestable, and only became their argument after all the other ones failed.
And i'm iffy on paying for it...
But why charge us on something that's EXCLUSIVE?
If I had being growing up with the franchise, I'd probably have a huge soft spot for characters like freaking Nemesis and now if I didn't have the right platform I'd be missing out?
It's not like it's a costume or something, it's a whole 'nother mode starring a classic franchise character.
That's a lovely way to treat your fans.
Although I guarantee this is a timed-exclusive.
RPGs thrive on story quest and story content, removing that content to monetize it is unconscionable and indefensible.
Fighters, on the other hand, thrive on iteration, tweaking and testing. We've known for a month these characters were going to happen for the Vita version. I'm reserving judgement because the nature of the genre is iteration which means there is even iteration between arcade versions and online patches.
I think these characters are going to be free content because the Vita version will have then by default. Until we see otherwise, people need to chill the fuck out.
fuck that i want see nemesis walk around with rocket launcher and shoot tentacles at people
But will all the previews saying this game is shit, coupled with day 1 DLC exclusive to the 360 and a delayed PC port.
I am gonna pass and wait 6 months for Resident evil 6 like the rest of the sane population
From Ashes isn't actually on the disc (from what I've heard) and isn't exclusive to a particular console. Also, you get it for free if you buy the collector's edition. None of that makes what BioWare's doing acceptable, but it does make it "better" than Capcom's version of the same thing, IMO.
inb4 biodrone. I'm not actually in favor of BioWare's shit, but I think that their scenario is slightly different from Capcom's.
Yeah, I agree on the Bioware thing (not a fan of Bioware to begin with, really), but their explanation is at least plausible. We'll probably never know for sure whether or not they're just covering their ass, but that's the nature of the beast. No one is going to investigate it (no real incentive to), so we either take their word for it or we don't. It doesn't make it less wrong, it just makes it hard to pinpoint how wrong it is. I agree that its indefensible from a consumer standpoint, we don't stand to gain from piecemeal RPGs.
The videos are damning in the case of SFXT because it proved, in a single night, that Capcom backed itself into a wall over and over trying to cover its ass. Come out and say "Yeah, the content is there, but because of [x], [y], and [z] we had to withhold it for a while and it will be unlocked for free in a little bit", and you just gave the community an honest/respectable answer. It would be fair to continue to judge the base practices behind it, sure, but at least you weren't lied to over and over.
The content is there, they lied about how much content was there when it was discovered more than once, and continued to mislead people into believing it was indeed DLC. They may have planned on making the unlocks/patches for all these extra characters free, but that doesn't make it right to lie to your customers.
Of course, just like Bioware said the content was made post-cert, Capcom can say this content was always meant to be free and there'd be no real way to question it. The trick would be to make gaming budgets more transparent, like they are in movies (read an article on Gamasutra about this not too long ago), so that gaming companies don't get these get out of jail free cards.
fair enough, have fun either not playing nemesis mode, or wasting $4 on something that could have been included in the asking price.
the issue is pretty clear cut to most people, and although you may think you're so much better than them, they will be voting with their wallets too. publishers are withholding as much content as possible from games these days, and people are not only paying for said content, people like you are even actively discouraging people from complaining about it.
i don't see the situation getting any better. i'm also not buying this game incidentally!
Not any more - I just canceled my preorder. Any game with day 1 DLC will not get my money. This includes ME3.
At least 360 fans got plenty of notice about the SFxT DLC.
Even if I had both systems I'd still miss out on my already reserved Special Edition if I switched to 360.
I take it back, nothing of value was lost.
It's not really Nemesis unless I can jam a tentacle down someones throat.
The fact that its 360 exclusive would have you forget that Nemesis was a playstation exclusive originally. Its a shame Capcom couldn't hire an outside dev team that actually likes the series.
i was actually considering getting this, not anymore :P
maybe sometime next year ^^
