Codemaster’s Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising has a new release date. Earlier today, the publisher announced that the simulation shooter would ship to various North American retailers without a street date on October 6th. EPAC territories will be able to get their bloody hands on the title October 9th.
Below the fold you can watch another teaser video for the game released this morning with the release date information. Once again, the game footage looks great, however, that’s kind of the point of teasers. If anything, the teaser gives us the impression that Dragon Rising will have an old-school Ghost Recon vibe, but it won’t be all silent espionage: there’s plenty of bangs and thuds in the teaser as well.
Color us cautiously optimistic. What do you guys think?
ive never seen or heard of this series before this game(saw it in a game informer i think).
whats it like? was it PC only before?
is it like the PC versions of old rainbow six games where you need to set up the attack. or is it more like GRAW?
at least this should hold me over till a new rainbow six comes out.
No it isn't. First of all Arma 2 is a buggy mess. Second of all OFP 2 offers all kinds of features that Arma 2 does not. What you're trying to say is something along the lines of, "Never played Team Fortress 2? Then play F.E.A.R. and that's what it'll be like."

Usually people follow that kind of statement up with some sort of reasoning.
It's a game on my radar, but I'll likely wait till after release and get feedback from other gamers on how good the game is (unless they release a PS3 demo which will help determine if it's a buy or not).
Yeah, once you get over the fact that you should never play single player in ArmA games until they release the "godsend" patch that fixes everything, and only play multiplayer, ArmA2 is hella fun... if you have the patience to learn how everything works and to respect the simulation side of everything.
Operation Flashpoint (the first one) was pretty much exactly like ArmA bar being made in 1990's.
This on the other hand looks like a slightly more realistic version of BF2, which means it's going to be axed in a lot of depth+features that ArmA2 has but at the same time it won't take forever to get used to playing it I imagine.
I loved the first Operation Flashpoint and the Resistance expansion, but this is completely different, developed by Codemasters.
Bohemia Interactive f'ed up ArmA and ArmA 2, the first one was buggy as hell, only later they fixed most of it. I didn't play ArmA 2, but it looks like it has the same challenges as the first one.
OFP was a very good game. It's nothing like Ghost Recon, Operation Flashpoint was a uncompromising simulation, and trough the campaign you experienced war from many different view points, both as the game followed different characters (basic infantry, tank crew, helicopter crew, and a squad leader) and as individual characters gained ranks (first you play as a regular soldier, and later you become a squad leader). You are able to drive any available vehicle, but you always have to follow orders (you can't just jump in a tank and drive off, leaving your squad behind, except in later missions where you are the commander, and can lead your squad any way you like, using any available resources). The game has many possibilities within each mission (every encounter is different), and the main campaign story actually branches out in a couple of different paths, depending on your performance in missions. The whole game takes place on three huge islands and there is great freedom in completing each individual mission. Its one of my favourite games, it is very challenging, and because of that, not for everyone.
I hope Codemasters kept that realism feeling and constant awareness, it is very easy to die, and some missions have to be played a couple of times to progress.
The original Operation Flashpoint was a great game, it was more a war simulation than a shooter (you could die with a single well placed shot, it didn't have to be on the head) and thus not everyone liked it... it also wasn't very popular here in America, but I remember a couple of TV programs from Spain and France going nuts over the game.
The graphics weren't the greatest, even for its time, but the gameplay was something I never experienced before.... I finished some missions withous shooting a single enemy, because I was so busy shouting orders, crawling under heavy fire, requesting healing, and crying like a girl because of all the turmoil and explosions... and suddenly found myself advancing just enough that my AI teammates could dispatch all the enemies in the area...
Don't judge this game on the graphics alone. If they manage to keep those gameplay elements intact, it's gonna be a shotter like you haven't seen in all this generation. Sadly, it's so unique that it´s gonna end tanking at retail sales.
ARMA 2's multiplayer is hardly perfect. After buying up the full game because the demo was so lacking, I was incredibly disappointed to find nothing but coop games on the server listing. Found 1 Hold game so far, even then it's not even that good. Once more Player vs Player servers come up, then multiplayer will be good. I don't dislike coop at all, but when there is nothing but coop, it sucks (plus these coop missions are rubbish in quality).

Download the Arma 2 demo, thats what OFP is/will be like.

I'd just get the new Operation Flashpoint and skip this, at least Flashpoint is endearing.
ARMA2's campaign is riddled with bugs, the multiplayer works perfect. 100 player, 50 vs 50 matches anyone?
ARMA2 is a simulator in reality. It has the things you expect from simulators.

You do realize the creators of the original OFP left Codemasters to make Arma right?
