Seattle, Washington-based Undead Labs has announced today that it has partnered with Microsoft to bring an "open world zombie-survival" game to Xbox Live Arcade.
Code-named "Class3," the third-person open world title finds players facing a classic zombie apocalypse situation. Survivors will be forced to find a settlement, fortify the area from undead attacks, as well as venture out into the world for supplies and to rescue other survivors.
It sounds like "Class3" has an action slant to it, as Undead Labs is promising "sweet guns, fast cars, hand-to-hand combat, and copious amounts of zombie gore." The game world is said to develop and change in real time, with player decisions determining how its shaped.
No word on a release, but we'll keep you updated as we learn and see more. Back in 2009 we spoke with Undead Labs founder Jeff Strain, who discussed the zombie MMO ambiguously, but said "I'm very specifically setting out to make the best zombie MMO ever." Sounds ambitious, and as a fan of horror and zombies (nope, still not getting old!), I can't wait to see what they're cooking up.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Took the words right out of my mouth, Chester.
Almost too good to be true, in fact.
PC release please
Either way, I'm very interested! Zombies are pretty much up there with Aliens and werewolves now. They're a thing, not a fad.
SO many games use the MMO moniker nowadays when they are NOT an MMO. APB is the best example. Putting 50 people maximum in a server does not make it "Massive": it's an open world action game. World at War PC can have 32 on 32 combat - is that an MMO? Is Diablo II an MMO?
An MMO is something like World of Warcraft, Ultima, and Warhammer: something that doesn't have you "meet up" with people in hub worlds (a la Phantasy Star Online and Guild Wars 1) to get to smaller instances.
That said, I seriously doubt this would be an MMO, given that it's on the Xbox Live Arcade. If I had to guess, it would be 10 people to a game (max), and you have some sort of pseudo level up system in a town about a fourth the size of Liberty City.
I swear, I left that exact statement as a comment somewhere on Dtoid as my dream game. This sounds amazing in concept, I just hope that they pull it off well. I'm never going to be tired of zombies, I don't care.
Delicious.
"Undead Labs has announced today that it has partnered with Microsoft..."
Apparently Microsoft seems to think so.

Schweeeeeeet!
(it seems I'm not the only one, why has this not been done sooner?)
Even though it's not top down, it sounds alot like Urban Dead. I was huge into that game 6 years ago.
As others have stated, this is like yet another dream come true for this kid that was raised on Romero's classics! If they're promising "fast cars" let's hope the map is sizeable to allow us room to have fun. Having to fortify areas sounds promising as you'll likely have to defend against the zombie hordes? The crescendo events in the L4D series were OUTSTANDING and I hope Undead Labs can take it to the next level!
GO UNDEAD LABS!!
Can't wait can't wait can't wait!
Ditto to that.
Anyway, sounds interesting, but whether it will be better than Dead State should prove interesting. Damn, I'll play both, twice the zombie action. I just hope MS doesn't do a half hearted effort with it.
Apparently you didn't read where they teamed up with MS and the game is for XBLA. I hope MS is smart and keeps it 360 only so fanboys like you who always troll will rage and be upset. It'll be soo worth it <3
game sounds interesting though! dead nation on psn is going to be hard to beat, lets see if they can do it!
