Oopsies: IGN watermark on the cover of Okami photo

You Internet Matlocks sometimes amaze the hell out of me. Over on NeoGAF, a Wii Okami thread started up and it was pretty innocent enough until user bob digi pointed out a horrible fact. Right by Amaterasu's mouth is the IGN watermark. I'm looking at the box as I write this up and sure enough, the IGN logo is there.

What looks to have happened is that the horrible and lazy "artist" that made the cover lifted this piece from IGN's Web site. They then took an image of Amatersau and slapped her right on top of the background image. Capcom didn't seem to notice and printed out the design for all of the Okami Wii boxes.

What I don't get is why on Earth did the cover "artist" need to lift an image from IGN? Why couldn't he have just received the photos he needed directly from Capcom?! Was he just too impatient to wait and wanted to get paid as fast as possible? Whatever the case, this is one very embarrassing mistake.

[Thanks, Riven!]

@Mxyzptlk

I personally thought the painting controls were amazing, but everything else wasn't --- The visual style and ink effects were completely changed in the Wii version, which made me sell it to find a PS2 copy.

Also, @wakeey:

That's beta artwork, and wasn't used in the final version. But if you look on that one, the watermark is there, too, in the same spot by the tree.

totally not the huge deal some are making it out to be.

to the guy who said he could do better than the cover artist; wtf do you mean? are you incapable of making mistakes?

someone somewhere will laugh about this, change it and nobody will care by tomorrow.

@ Superfluous Moniker

You're spot-on, man. I had the same issue occur during my play-time with the PS2 version of Okami, and that was resolved by making longer strokes. It seems like the issue has carried over to the Wii version. Though some paintbrush moves are a little sensitive even still. I can't for the life of me fix that stupid chicks wheel so that I can get me some sweet, sweet saki.

Did this guy lift it from the IGN site? That right there is strike 1 and he should be fired for that reason alone. Who the fuck lifts a web image for mass print usage? Dumbass. But the fact that he missed an entirely different logo . Did they simply ask the office secretary to "Photoshop it out?". There's no reason to even fucking open Photoshop aside from color correction, assuming it's a different printer handling the output of this box art than the previous one, which should take all of 32 seconds. But still, didn't they have the original source work?

psycho_terror: This is actually a pretty huge deal, and trust me, I'd love to take his fucking place and show him how it's done. I'm a graphic designer four years removed from college, and I work for a fucking newspaper...this guy screams amateur straight out of college. It's not like he had to redo the artwork on his own, it was merely a matter of placing an existing file in a Wii template and sending the fucker to press. Doesn't get much simpler than that, but instead this guy fucked up and Wii Okami owners get a flawed piece of packaging.

the thing is, it would have been very easy to totally remove the logo, so maybe they left a trace of it there because they thought no one would notice and it would be their little joke on the world (or the region that uses this cover at least).

I wonder if IGN could sue Capcom for this? It would be ridiculous, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised...

It's not that he made a mistake...which we all do. He stole, then he made a mistake...then he got caught. :) We're all capable of being lazy...heck I'm commenting on Dtoid while I'm supposed to be working.... only difference is that my boss doesn't know ha ha :)

I bet that at one point someone at Capcom saved IGN images and got them mixed in with others..then accidently sent those to the artist.

To agree with robotplague, my wife is a graphic designer. There have been many times where she'd tell me about how some company would ask her to do a piece, but either not provide the images or give her ones that she can't use (too small, low resolution, etc). A lot of the stuff she does is for internal distribution, so sometimes she can go out and grab some similar images off the Internet. But, she always makes she removes anything like a watermark.

Something that is for distribution among the masses, she has to go through her bosses to purchase stock art from appropriate sites. And depending on the company she's doing work for, they may budget for stock art purchases for internal pieces.

It's hard to imagine that Capcom couldn't provide artwork for the designer. Really sounds like someone was too lazy to contact Capcom for proper artwork, or Capcom just didn't care.

They should charge $10 extra for the box since it's next gen.

I mean lazy.
