Only one Xbox 360 game gets into Japan's top 100, DS gets 47 photo

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has released a load of dirty sales data from the Land of Pixelated Porn, revealing the top 100 selling games of 2008. These games have been broken down by platform, because console wars are fun.

It would surprise nobody that the Nintendo DS cleaned up, with 47 of Japan's top selling games appearing on the massively successful handheld. Shamefully, the Xbox 360 only managed to sneak one game into the top 100, coming in at number 82 with Tales of Vesperia. This proves that you can be successful in Japan, provided you sell them the same thing they've been playing for over a decade.

Here's the full breakdown:

DS: 47 games
Wii: 15 games
PSP: 15 games
PS2: 12 games
PS3: 10 games
Xbox 360: 1 game

In another turn of events that aren't shocking, Nintendo was Japan's most successful publisher. 29 of the top sellers were put out by the Big N, followed by Namco Bandai's 20. I can't tell you what the top 100 games were, because I am too lazy to learn Japanese. However, using my acute "recognizing the little English bits" skills, I can tell you the that Capcom's Monster Hunter: 2nd G was the best selling game.

Here's the platform breakdown anyway, for those who care:

Nintendo: 29 games
Namco Bandai: 20 games
Square Enix: 11 games
Konami: 10 games
Capcom: 6 games
Level5: 4 games
Sony Computer Entertainment: 3 games
The Pokémon Company: 3 games
Koei: 2 games
Atlus: 2 games
Enterbrain: 1 game
IE Institute: 1 game
Hudson: 1 game
Rocket: 1 game
EA: 1 game
Marvelous: 1 game

You know it's funny, because I feel like Western gamers are just as bad. We keep buying the same "Mysterious man with "a past" uses a gun/sword/gunsword to kill every nazi/zombie/alien/nazizombiealien he sees... or die trying" games year in and year out.

Japan likes their games to be like Manga, we like our games to be like Sci-Fi channel original movies. Neither country seems to care much for games that try to do their own thing (like Let's Tap.)

c'mon Jim, put some effort into it, i mean how hard can it be to read japanese? i reaaaally wanna know what was the best selling game on every system, at the least...Dtoiders demand journalism....

@ Analitic I saw the list, and while I cannot read Japanese the top game was a psp game and I think that might be Monster Hunter. Obviously I may be wrong, but just a guess.

You know, I don't even think I could name 100 games that came out this year, let alone name the top selling ones.

pascuz, i think you're right...especially since Jim already mentions that, i think the 2nd and the captal G are also giveaways. Im just pulling a leg here, but it would be interesting to find out what japanese people thought were the best games on every console, instead of just reading Gamespot's top 500, or IGN's top gaming babes of the year or something...Arigato mashimas

I'm just gonna say it: For the most part, Japan has shitty taste in games.

@Analitic

#2 game reads: "ポケットモンスター プラチナ."

ポケット = Poketto = Pocket
モンスター = Monsutaa = Monster
プラチナ = Purachina = Platinum

I know, it's like Pokemon SIMPLY CAN'T DIE...

The chances of Pokemon ever dying are tremendously slim. both in japan and in america lots of people line up for the latest pokemon fix.

Heck, the day platinum goes on sale I'll probably buy it.

Shocking.

Worth noting that there are more PS2 games than PS3 games on the list. And thusly I continue to be baffled at Sony's lack of support for proper back compat in the PS3.

Lost Odyssey launched in Japan at the beginning of December 2007, and sold about 50k units in its first week. I don't have sales figures for 2008, but my guess is that just about everyone who had a 360 and wanted the game bought it in 2007. So they would have been lucky to have broken 100k units moved in '08.

....just sayin'

There are only 7 on that list that interest me, and I haven't played Vesperia or Valkyria Chronicles yet.

Also FIFA is a lot more fun than Winning Eleven.

22. DS - Chrono Trigger, 433k
5. Wii - Super Smash Brothers Brawl, 1.7m
11. PS3 - Metal Gear Solid 4, 686k
64. Wii - Super Mario Galaxy - 197k
66. PS3 - Grand Theft Auto 4, 195k

93. PS3 - Valkyria Chronicles, 141k

Just to reiterate what was said above:

we in the US like a different kind of generic game than those in Japan.

They like manga. We like Sci-Fi channel original movies, King Arthur, and World War II.
