Only Japan is getting two versions of NieR? photo

If you're curious to see the differences between NieR Gestalt for Xbox 360 and NieR Replicant for PS3, then you'll need to find a young rich Japanese widow to marry and become a citizen in the land of the Rising Sun. Only Gestalt is releasing outside of Japan, with Replicant being a Japan-only deal. At least, that's the implication.

While not specifically stated, Japanese-to-English blog Andriasang is reporting that a Famitsu interview with executive producer Yosuke Saito "heavily implied" the international status of NieR. Considering it's only ever been called NieR in the West, with no mention of a Gestalt or Replicant, it's an implication that is quite likely true.

According to the interview, NieR Replicant is designed to appeal specifically to the Japanese market, with Gestalt being designed with a more Western slant. This explains why the game's titular character is younger and more effeminate in Replicant, and why the main character is his sister and not his daughter. Japan loves a girly virgin.

In other news, NieR will be a single-player affair, with no co-op planned. I approve of this, because I'm sick of shoehorned co-op in my action games. Also, DLC is being considered.

So there.

Nice.

SqEnix can't resist putting a ladyboy in a starring role. I knew it.

So, does that mean the rest of the world is getting Gestalt on 360 and PS3? Or the rest of the world is getting Gestalt on 360 only? If the latter, then that's a big middle finger to SquareEnix's non-Jap PS3 owners.

So does this mean the US won't see a PS3 version of Neir? I can't imagine Square going through all the trouble to make 2 different versions of the same game only to port Gestalt to the PS3 for gamers outside Japan...

Why do gamers always think SE uses "ladyboys" in any role. Have you seen the body shapes and faces of Japanese men, it just like any SE game. This probably has to do with SE being a Japanese company I'd guess.

Anywho, Im a little bummed if the US PS3 isn't going to get a version of this. It's a little funny that Jim is posting this, since he is the biggest PS3 fanboy ever in all space and time. *wink*

wtf....always the same shit. I think no one of the Pubs learned about some localization disasters in the past. Like Persona 1 for PSX. I think it was a big LULZ that they put a black person into a game (no...i have nothing against black ppl) and replaced the Japanese names with more western ones + deleted a quest. And everyone was not feeling lucky about that. And now they do the same shit again. Only worse.

Another problem is the licensing shit...i think they lost the overview the contracts with MS and Sony. Like Chibi_Zero already mentioned: "Neir for PS3? No wait it was only Gestalt? Or was it Replicant?AHHHHH confused??"

I mean the ppl always want stuff that they cannot get...like Persona 2: Innocent Sin. So...plz file it under INDUSTRIAL BULLSHIT

...Thanks, Squennix, for denying us once again one of your games, most likely for an "exclusive" offer with Microsoft. Just be sure to give us more and better stuff when Replicant actually hits the US.

I honestly hope that the above isn't the case, or worse we never get it at all. Come on, Squeenix! Stop holding out on us all the time! We're sick of it.

Why? Seriously. Shit they wouldn't even have to dub that sucker. Just give us subtitles.

Square needs to stop assuming they know what Western audiences want and just put the shit out.

Dude, seriously? Shoehorned or not, co-op is awesome. I really appreciate it when developers put it in there. If you don't use the mode, how does it affect you?

Anyway, if I was going to buy this game, it would have been the 360 version anyway. I don't have a PS3, but I'm sorry for anyone who was looking forward to Replicant :(

This is very strange, since wasn't it also Square that decided on not releasing FXIII on 360 in japan, just for PS3? They seem to be sending mixed messages here, with a more likely hard on for PS3 (as Sony do own shares in SE.

Yep those japanese gamers can't handle characters of age in their games, apparently, but I think such views will change in time, as more western games show well, a likeable character can be any age and still be fun.

So will the NieR still release on the PS3 in the west, but just be the Gestalt version of the game, or will the game just be 360-exclusive outside of Japan?

Right, I wanted to know this too, so I checked out the article and it sounds like it was heavily implied PS3 and 360 will be getting Gestalt outside Japan, so PS3 owners outside Japan won't be going empty-handed.

It's simple. Americans simply can't accept the fact that the main character is a lady with a penis. We're all so closed minded here in the US, so Square must know what they're doing. I mean...what if your child saw you playing it and decided he or she wanted a sex change? I, for one, am glad that Squenix is looking out for the moral integrity of America.

In case someone still doesn't understand, that was sarcasm.

At least they picked the region-free system to not-release it for. Now I can import it if nothing else.

So tired of people who think games made in Asia are designed to not appeal to their native audience and to us instead.

Not you, Jim, just people who continue to beat the dead "loladyboy" horse.

Water is wet. Fire is hot. We get it.

Perhaps they fear a japanese gamer backlash of low sales, and stick these pretty boys characters in there, to keep cosplayers happy. While I agree that it might be, a design reflection of japanese society, where many peple look similar.

Kinda getting old and more original designs are needed, that aren't so typical and cookie cutter.

"Do not want it to be westernized."
You can buy the completely easternized version still! Original fonts and texts included!

And on another note: I wonder why the import scene was so epic back in the day of SNES all the up to the PS1, and now that it's more accessible than ever on ps3 due to it being region-free, people barely show interest.

Alright, this pisses me off if it comes true. I loved Drakengard 1 & 2 (username, duh) and here I thought I was going to get another Cavia crazy story and now it seems like only the 360 will get it. ... Great... Bastards...

@Drakengard read carefully, the 360 version that Japan is getting is going to be the international version. PS3 version there is only what THEY are getting.

SE, we buy your games FOR the Japanese flavor, not in spite of it. "Americanizing" your games only makes me want them less. Just give Replicant subtitles, I'll import it. But I'm not buying a port of the 360 NieR: Gears of War dude in a fantasy setting.
