Only 8% of Koei's sales come from outside Japan photo

I knew Koei had more success inside Japan than outside, but I had no idea that the figures were quite so dramatic. Sony has revealed that 91.8% of Koei's sales are made within Japan, naming and shaming the publisher as the least internationally successful Japanese company. Its partner publisher, Tecmo, was a close second, with 89.6% of its sales coming from its home country.

Surprisingly, Square Enix's numbers don't look so hot either, relying on Japan for 86.6% of its sales. Sony believes this is bad news for the publishers, with Sony Japan Studios VP Yasuhide Kobayashi believing that the Japanese market is shrinking and that companies must appeal to the US and Europe.

Koei is working hard with attempts to improve its Western standing. Its newest installment in the Warriors series, Warriors: Legends of Troy is being designed from the ground up to appeal to Westerners, with a recognizable historical backdrop and a focus on M-rated blood n' guts. You can likely expect more Japanese studios to cram gore and sex into their games as they attempt to reach out to we bloody-minded American pigs.

Is the stats just for the ps3 or is it for all consoles?

I loves the Dynasty Warriors...so I sometimes spend my monies on Koei stuff.

This surprises me though...I'm part of an 8% sales minority?
That's crazy.

Everything Niero said is true.

God, I hope Koei offers Guitaroo Man as a digital download soon.

Is he a man, a robot, or a GUITAR!? These Japanese games from the future are way too intense.

You mean to say that the Japanese didn't put sex appeal into their games to reach out to themselves?

"bloody-minded American pigs."
God i don't know what's worse... THAT being the perception of japanese developers of american gamers, or that the comparatively poor sales numbers when judged against what does sell great here seem to confirm that perception...

Sorry to say it, but Japan's a sinking market. Adapt or go bankrupt.

well, also Koei won't release alot of their games outside of Japan. It is a grave that they are digging themself. I would love to play new RotTK and Nobunaga games, but they refuse to localize them and ship them over here and support them.

See, that's why we need to start wanting more Japanese-y games, lest they suddenly die out for lack of a market.

I'm with that idea. Unfortunantely, Jim is right. Americans are bloddy-minded. They don't appreciate the nuances of japanese games. All they want is "GRRAAH, BLOOD! GUNS! HALO!"

First off Koei games blow. I'm sorry but the majority of games Koei brings over here outright suck or are decent for their intended audience who are few and far between here in the states. I'm sorry if that means the games are "dumbed down" for Americans but I guess we can't have the brilliant taste of "real" gamers.

Second Gitaroo Man is fucking brilliant.

I don't think it's so much that each company only sells well in Japan and sells poorly outside of Japan - after all, Square Enix certainly sells well worldwide - it's more just that they sell alright/fairly well world wide, and unbelievably well in Japan.

Glass half full and all that.

No surprise there. Most Koei games' background is based heavily on japanese history, which is a major turnoff for western audience.

"gore and sex". Excuse me Jim? I'm pretty sure the Japanese put plenty of gore in their video games or at least plenty of violence. As for the sex part, I think we all know the Japanese are dominate that aspect.

As for the sales part, what did you expect? Japan has a MUCH lower population than the Canada, Americans, Europeans, etc. combined.

Considering the subject matter of their games, I'd imagine a lot has to do with how incredibly well the games sell in Japan. I mean a new Samurai Warriors is gonna be a chart topper there. That and they also are very poor at pricing their games here. I mean seriously, when you're going for a such a niche market in this country, you can't be selling Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 for $60...

Idea: Less boys that look like girls.

With the exception of (us) RPG fans, I think the average Mustang-driving bacon-drinking homeboy will not even consider what the game could possibly be about.

@InfraredChimera: That's because much more Americans like Madden than DW. It's like how much of Japan isn't interested in many popular games that Americans love.

The reason "the japanese market is shrinking" is because every idiot thinks they need to appeal to the west.

It's perfectly possible for a game to completel ignore the west and be successful, just look at Yakuza 3, a big budget top tier game released only in japan and only on PS3

Its because the mainstream market doesn't want anything interesting, they want more of the same mediocre crash like Guitar Hero or *insert almost any FPS from the last 2 years here*

Didn't Ninja Gaiden 2 sold like a million?And how about DOA 4?

I'm pretty sure that most people only watch the gameplay videos and trailers of DOA:Extreme games and its Pole Dancing modes instead of actually buying or playing'em.

Maybe TECMO sales will increase when they release harassing games with NATAL support.

Square Enix would have more luck if they released some bastard games in Europe.

I'm not buying your game new if you're not selling it to me with the respect a customer deserves.
