OnLive launches on June 17 photo

OnLive will be released on June 17 for the PC and Mac, the same week as E3 2010. The cloud gaming service promises to offer instant streaming of PC games from various publishers such as Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, 2K Games and many more. The service will run for $14.95 and additional subscription plans will be announced closer to the launch.

OnLive will be available in the United States and the first 25,000 people that sign up for the service will get three months of access for free. Some of the launch titles will include Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Assassin's Creed II, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Borderlands and Metro 2033. The MicroConsole TV Adapter that will connect OnLive to your TV will be announced later in the year.

Despite everything I've heard about the OnLive service, I'm still not sold on the idea. How about you? Have any of you been in the beta for OnLive and if so, what did you think of it?

If so...fuck, I'll try it.

I am still not convinced. I will need several experience reviews regarding lag, service stability and convenience.

Don't bitch about the price. It's about the same as the monthly fees for any (good) MMOG. Not to mention it's about the same as Gamefly.

Between the lag and the video compression its probably going to run and look like shit. I'll pass.

So it's like Gamefly, but without going through the mail? Honestly, I don't know enough about the service to judge, yet. What kind of limitations are on the titles you play? How does it work regarding DLC? It could range from fantastic to horrific, depending on the details.

Price seems fine to me, but after looking into it, it seems like a just bad idea overall. Don't do it unless you can do it right...

That's what I was thinking. GameFly is $20 a month for 2 games.

Don't you have to have that little unit and controller? How much do those costs? I don't think I know what I'm talking about...

Is there any more info on this? Is there an initial "package" that you have to get or can you just sign up online and be in the games in 10 minutes?

Keep in mind that you have to buy/rent the games separately from the subscription. So that's $15 a month plus $50 per game.

It's on the OnLive site:

"Waiver of Service Fee includes free access to OnLive’s Game Service including game demos, video profiles and community features, but does not include playing full versions of games, which are to be purchased or rented separately." (Emphasis mine).

That $14.99 doesn't include game rentals or purchases, it's just for membership, like Xbox live gold but 4 times the cost.

After hearing about the whole $14.99 + $50 game purchases, I can only say that Onlive will very likely fail in the end. It would actually be spending more money in the end, rather than saving money. Their current line up isn't even worth all that money right now.

The way things look, it certainly will not dethrone the consoles, like they hope it would.
DreRox's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/10/2010 22:57

In theory, you pay extra for the service because your machine doesn't have the capability (see: system requirements, HDD space, etc.) to run the games you want to play. Otherwise there would be no point in the service at all even without extra fee.

This thing will burn to the ground. Piece of crap would ruin the gaming industry. The hardware companies will put it down, the pay is stupid, and who would buy a damn console for which you can't even own the games of. They're all streamed, it's like watching youtube videos.
Stupid, stupid stupid.

Paying full price for a digital distribution game is pushing it.

Paying full price for something even less than that is idiotic.

And 15 bucks a month on top of that? Hell, this idea is starting to sell me on the idea of digital distribution...at least with DD you have some form of ownership, things can be redownloaded, transferred and backed up to an extent.

But this is the equivilant of giving your friend's friend some money, then having him install the game on his computer, and playing it over a network. At that point I start to really question how this shit is justified in the eyes of the company.

At least there won't be any DRM issues, right?

I would pay per night.
Tonight I play Battlefield for 4.99$.
Subscriptions are not casual friendly, and the whole onlive-lag thing is supposed to appeal to casual.

This is up better then renting a game. You can't play it infinitely you can only play till your subscription ends. It would he better to buy a new pc and buy the games since you can play infinitely (also no fee). Also lookn at the lag issues it might be better gameplay wise.

In that case dump this shit and fix the fucking reception in Houston.

Seriously how can I get full bars in the central America boonies but not in downtown Houston?

That's interesting though. Suddenly I really want to know what non-videogame companies are invested in videogames.

If you can only play if you have an active membership then they really aren't selling you anything. Buying and renting better be dirt cheap or this will fail hard.
