OnLive announces monthly PlayPack plan photo

Between the new MicroConsole and this just-announced subscription plan, OnLive is stepping it up. Dubbed the PlayPack, this $9.99 per month plan will feature 40 mainstream and indie titles when it launches on January 15. Currently, the beta version -- which features 14 games -- is free to OnLive game system owners until then.

As expected, the goal is to grow this selection and presumably keep the rotation fresh enough to warrant that monthly fee. OnLive will continue to offer games for sale on an individual basis and essentially function as it does normally.

And, speaking of the MicroConsole, units are now being shipped. If you ordered early, you should be getting your system very soon.

I don't like the idea behind Onlive. Even if the service isn't that much per month, or even if the system did work as well as playing it directly on the system that processes the game; I don't like the idea of not really owning games and losing access to them if my internet goes out for whichever reason. It could be argued that the amount I spend on one game could pay for a lot of time on the service, but I'd still prefer to never have the threat of losing access to a game I bought (unless of course it breaks, gets lost, etc.)

You know what the funny thing is? This is the perfect console to play Kane and Lynch 2 on, because hey, you can't tell the difference between the video compression from OnLive and the compression they use in the game as a special effect!

I've been using OnLive since they opened the beta and its really grown on me. The quality has gotten much better and even when I don't feel like playing a game I boot it up just to watch other people play. I recommend everybody try it, as you can just make an account and play a 30 minute trial of all but one game for free just to see if you like it.

Although, no built in wifi on the micro console renders it pretty fucking useless. Who the hell has their modem next to their TV in the living room? And the roommates wouldn't appreciate a 50ft ethernet cable going from the office to my room. Thankfully I got it for free as a founding member.

@ lazyman

Thats cazy, so even if you marathoned on weekends you'll still rack up at least 500 gigs a month, most ISP's will cancel your service for that.

200 gigs?

There goes pretty much ANY OnLive sales in Canada. Most services charge a buck or so a Gig beyond 50. Getting a $150 bill for the service to go along with the monthly fee? I don't fucking think so.

If this is true, OnLive is going to fail HARD.

A lot of you are missing the point of OnLive. It's the poor man's i7 gaming PC, not the online-only Steam clone.

I gotta say, the economy sucks, and I'm broke...OnLive has been a great way to still be able to play some games I love, like Borderlands, without having to buy anything other than the crappy old notebook I have.

Kudos if you can afford a PS3, 360, Wii, and gaming powerhouse PC, but not all of us can. OnLive is a great service for the moment, and, if properly positioned, could revolutionize gaming.
