OnLive accepting beta testers right meow photo

OnLive (the streaming game service that is supposed to free us from PC hardware restrictions and bring about the second coming of Gumby) is moving out of internal beta and into an external one, according to a recent post on the official OnLive blog written by company CEO and founder Steve Perlman.

Those who jumped the gun and applied for the external beta on the company’s Web site are being considered, but there are spots still open. Perlman points out that there is a few requirements that selected applicants must respond to, including running a “detailed Performance Test” on their Internet connections and computer configurations. Not bad, but it is a little extra work.

The goal for the new beta is to, d’uh, test out the streaming videogame service on a variety of platforms and connections. Both PC and Macintosh owners with an array of different speed of Internet connections are being considered.

kinda sucks they make you use a computer. I was hoping they'd send a free little ethernet box like they will in the final version.

I see a big FAIL for OnLive's future.

A lot of rich venture capitalists are going to lose a lot of money on this.

US only. Would have liked to see if this can even come close to working.

I'm not hoping On Live will fail but I am hoping that we'll still realise that something like that just isn't a prefered option when in comes to gamers. The fact that On Live requires an internet connection already makes it a hassle.

I can't see this going anywhere. Especially in the UK where it isn't possible to get the performance you're sold because anyone having the goddamn cheek to use those 8Mbits/s will be throttled into next week.

I'm sure they've done the research to answer this question. But is broadband penetration really large enough to make this a worthwhile business venture? I just can't imagine this working well unless you're on a fios line or similar.

I'm surprised that people are so skeptical of this service. I doubt OnLive's developers would be foolish enough to release it to a public beta if it didn't exhibit a basic level of functionality. Of course, no one has expectations that this will provide the same quality experience you get with your gaming rig of 360, but if it can work on a basic level as a proof of concept that will be enough to ensure a steady stream of investment until it can rival contemporary consoles.

Maybe I'm just too hopeful for a day when I don't need to worry about scratched discs or red rings of death, but they couldn't have made it this far unless there was some value in the service.

I'm in the UK, and I signed up anyway. If I get in but can't connect to the service or it's unplayable, then I'll give someone else my account.
