At this rate, games will soon expire, too. Hideo Kojima's dream of disposable one-time-use videogames is slowly coming true.
Before I went to bed, I kept thinking to myself, "I wonder if those online code will expire... nahhhhh", and of course, I wake up today and see this story.
So I just hopped on my 360 and entered my online code and it worked just fine. Maybe this is an isolated incident for this guy.
Online passes expiring for things like the catwomen content? Now that's all kinds of bullshit.
Fuck being a true fan to these shitty publishers, they don't deserve it, you want to be a true fan? great, but do it with those that don't treat you like their own walking cash machines with BS like this.
Video game developers/publishers need to realize that, if they want to use DRM or online passes or other techniques to fight against used games and/or piracy, they NEED gamers on their side. They NEED to make this as painless and issueless as possible. If they don't, it will just fuel the fires of hatred, which will result in a backfire.
You should be in line to buy the game at their midnight launches or you are all FILTHY THIEVING THIEVES stealing from the mouths of starving executives.
It's never been about rewarding buying new, just controlling when people buy new.
Now let's hear the defense for this from EA bootlickers...
"buying the game on sale, used or pirating it .... you're all the same in their eyes"
Fixed now with 75% more comma!
Oh well, it's not like they WANT me to consider DLC or subscriptions...
So maybe Jim, just maybe, you should reword this article to make it clear that the code was expired before he put it in, and not seem like the guy had already redeemed the code and then it expired after a period of time...
This industry ... 2011 is going to be the downfall of quality. Everyone is going to follow suit. Levels are going to be locked out, your going to have to purchase every single gun you want in multiplayer, buying used get's you 1/3 of a game. Consumers are going to get pissed and stop buying, the industry will lose money, get cautious and start remaking unnecessary games. That last part, it's already begun happening if you didn't notice.
However, at least on 360, there is infrastructure for "subscriptions" - you input something and you get a subscription for that game - Call of Duty Elite did this. Perhaps if publishers are willing to work with Microsoft and Sony, they can devise a way to have a handful of codes that do not expire, and are "subscription" codes, rather than redemption codes.
Until then, all codes will expire at some point - and it's not just EA here, even if they're the biggest culprit. Hell, Warner Brother's Catwoman code is worse than most of the things EA ever did outside of Bioware passes - that's vital single player content!
Clearly the dates were expired, although were accepted by Xbox LIVE... so maybe this has all to do with EA coming back to their Evil Aempire ages?
If you buy a new game with an online pass, then you get online access, period. However, if you get unlucky and get old stock, then you might have to get a new code. Big difference between that and the "sky is falling" scenario some people are pushing.
This is the problem with using the first post in a forum thread as your entire source.
Then be quiet.
And that's why not having dedicated servers on the end-user side is going to fuck this entire generation of online multiplayer. A few years from now, you might wanna say "geez, I sure want to play NFS online right now", but then you're shit out of luck, because thanks to a greedy control bitch, there won't be any servers or online passes to buy.
Fuck EA. They are helping turning GAMING (not the sale of games itself) into business. And that will hurt our VG history.
Good! Because we're sick of hearing about it!
Actually.... just kidding in this case. I'm usually not against online passes since I'm of the understanding that 30 seconds out of my life isnt going to kill me, however if the current 'system' allows online passes (aka, the perk of buying new) to expire even for new copies... that's pretty bullshit.
Online Passes = Worst. Idea....EVAAAAAR!!!!!
EA, THQ and Sony? They certainly have bootlickers.
In Canada for example, laws were passed that made gift cards never expire. This is exactly the same issue. You already paid for the goods, they shouldn't expire.
Can someone for the love of anything please tell me why companies like EA feel like pushing consumer rights to the limits. It's just boggles my mind.
