In a few years time they will probably look at all the problems they've had with codes and find out that it hasn't affected sales 1 bit and scrap it
At least it hope
Trust me, Jim Sterling posting an article on destructoid isn't what's stopping them from scoring a win.
They already scored their win with online passes long ago.
I play single player, so I most likely won't even redeem the pass.
Goddamnit! I really wanted this game! I really did! FUUUUUCK. I vowed never to buy another game with an online pass after Battlefield 3. And FUCK! SHIT!...
Now I'm literally forced to buy this game used if I don't want to support the Online Pass, even though I really want to support the devs for making such a good game. DAMN THEM!
Quick, pretend like you know what you're talking about.
Batman AC is a good example of what this stuff is leading you to. Locking you out of single player content. This is just greedy publisher bullshit.
I wanted this game, but now it's a no sale.
Well, it only becomes normal because people just ho-hum their way through it instead of actually doing anything about it. But at the same time it comes down to how far is too far.
For Arkham City I felt locking away the Catwoman stuff was absolutely silly. Yeah, okay, the challenge modes have leader boards, big whoop! Its not like your playing anything online with any one. It was unnsessary to use her against used buyers (and to be real honest about it, she was cool at first but got old and annoying fairly fast). The game was single player right down to those challenge maps, and its hard to justify the code in that case.
For Co-op I think its butting just over the line, specially if this includes local co-op (or even worse, local Co-Op is excluded from the game period. 2 people should be able to play with each other with no worries. We didn't have to worry about his back a cycle ago, but suddenly this time around the language behind co-op is very vague, an online pass shouldn't be a part of that mess.
Full on Multiplayer is a testy situation because I've played MMO's and I know what goes into keeping servers running. I understand the quarrel behind "well the server is paid for with the initial purchase of a new game" but thats not how all of that $60 you spend is put into things, and that doesn't include upkeep and the staff that does the maintenance. In this case, which is unlike the subscription based MMO many have played, the games need to keep generating unique sales to fund the servers running them, and used sales -I can agree tentatively- slow that income down. However, games -unless they're CoD or BF or something people get frothy crazed over- don't generally keep a community long enough to justify the continued $10 price tag of online passes after -about- 6 months, and should either drop the price down by at least half; get rid of the price altogether (I know, unlikely); or take a shot in the arm by really pissing people off and just shut down the servers, and cut out that cost to their business completely.
Any way, if people are going to get pissy, and we're really going to hate on this thing, then we need to form a group and try to get a change made. It'd probably be easier to do that if the industry did the same and banded together completely to make passes happen across the board, but they won't and it'd have to be a company by company issue. Sure, a group like that might not make a damn difference overall, but honestly its a lot better then the complaining that those of us who don't like this are doing loosely in comments and forums. (And I feel this way about other issues in the industry, not just these passes.. Theres far to many things that are starting to slip into becoming normal, or have the potential too, that need to be squashed by the public, that just aren't because theres this universal shoulder shrug that passes by each of the issues like the wave at a baseball game)
Because I mentioned Batman at all? I'm talking about this specifically. Even so, people need to stop acting like they're entitled to all of this stuff. Why is buying a brand new copy such a big deal for everyone? Is that 5 dollar savings for the used copy really worth buying used in the first place?
Just buy the game new, support the industry, and shut up. If you buy it used, then you get the content separately. You're not being 'locked out' you're just being charged so the publisher can make up for the loss of a new sale.
So nice try, but I do know what I'm talking about.
Yeah, some honesty would be appreciated from publishers so Jim doesn't have to keep writing these.
You go ahead and let me know when that happens, okay?
DLC is tied to the console, it'll work for all gamertags as long as it's played on the same console. However, it will only work on other consoles for the gamertag it was redeemed under.
Was that so bad?
'Whored Mode,' what's that? I'm buying it for single player.
Online Pass Announced and suddenly
OMG DICK MOVE I'M NOT BUYING IT NOW.
This whole pass thing is to stop used sales. I don't know how buying the game used in protest isn't going to affect them seeing as that's what they are fighting in the first place. I'm not going to avoid games anymore as that would mean I would only have a couple, but I'm only going to reward game companies who aren't dicks.
That's hardcore bro, tell your story again. I want to hear it.
I needed a pre-order to cancel, though, so thank you THQ for discouraging me from purchasing your game and saving me some money. I guess I could get Red Dead Redemption GOTY Edition now.
I made an exception on the online pass for Arkham City, but only because of the Wal-Mart bundle with Arkham Asylum. That's a value and that's what I want as a customer, its a pity many publishers are starting to struggle with the concept of value.
Skyrim, Zelda and MW3 don't fucking need an online pass, not of the 3DS games I'm picking up this month need thing. MGS HD Collection didn't ask for it nor will UMVC3.
You missed my point on Batman.
Buying brand new isn't such a big deal, but when games are $60 each and you have things like MW3 today, Skyrim Friday, then this next Tuesday, it's a bit much to ask people to buy new all the time or buy at the $60 price point. 'You're' forcing me to do so if I want to get all the content. If I wanted to get all the games I'm interested in this year it would be too expensive.
Either way, whether 5 dollars is a big deal to you or not, publishers shouldn't be telling consumers how they should be buying their games. Instead of looking for better incentives on buying new, they lock you out of content. That is lazy and greedy practice.
So yes, when you paint people with a brush that they shouldn't care because they won't be affected. You don't know what you're talking about. People don't have to be affected by something to give a shit about it.
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your other points, but I will point out that A LOT of people (including me) really enjoy the horde modes in Gears, ODST and Reach (and probably other games, I'm sure). Not sure how great it would be on Saints and I don't have online at home right now to try it out, anyway, but I just thought I'd put that out there.
They should at least allow up to two activations per code.
As far as the people asking "If you were only going to buy it for single player than why do you even care if it has an online pass for multiplayer?" I care because by purchasing new even if I don't use the pass or play the multiplayer I would still be viewed as supporting their decision to pull this bullshit by buying a new copy.
