Quantcast

One way ticket to the City of Metronome, please photo

My own southern kin Flynn DeMarco posted this tidbit at Kotaku today about Metronome, a game I am more excited about than most big name releases planned for this year. Why, you ask, does this float my boat more than a hundred new Legend of Zeldas? One word sums it up -- innovation.

Metronome features a Steampunk themed enviroment, Phillip K. Dick quality paranoia, and uses sound as the game's central weapon. As a girl who played the hell out of games like Grim Fandango and Starship Titanic back in the day, I can say that one thing I really miss when I gaze into the giant bucket of sh*t that is PC gaming these days is the sparkle of titles such as these. Yeah, there is a demand for gorgeously generic next gen titles, but the role players hang out and hope for better. Obviously Tarsier Studios is taking the route less traveled, and I for one am thrilled to see it. They're still looking for a publisher for Metronome, so let's hope one is smart enough to bring this gem to light.

I have to say that I have never gotten really into the Adventure genre. I know people that like them alot but the couple I tried didn't catch me. Any recommendations on something I might actually enjoy anybody?

Heard about this a while ago and it looks promising. Lets hope that they arent planning it multiplatform (which is basically killing every adventure game right away).

An other game with a visual style that reminds me of City of the lost Children and I mean that as a good thing. Now if the Phillip K. Dick quality paranoia comes true, we have a winner.

@ namelessted:

I'm a huge fan of the original Sam & Max: Hit the Road. The follow-up episodes from Telltale Games are pretty good so far. Pretty much anything from Lucasarts in the 90's was excellent. Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Grim Fandango, et cetra. If you get your hands on any of the old DOS titles, you can run them using ScummVM. Finding most of these games is probably going to involve digging through ebay auctions or a visit to your BitTorrent site of choice.

A friend of mine has been playing The Longest Journey and it's sequel Dreamfall lately, he's been loving that.

Yeah, i have tried a couple of those older ones but I just can't get into them. Its not that they are bad, I just imagine how they could be different. I heard Dreamfall was good an might check that one out. Fahrenheit (aka, Indigo Prophecy) is an adventure style game that I played through like mad, that game was awesome. I am really looking forward to what Quantic Dream does next for sure.

@Husky Hog: Correct, who would have ever thought he would appear in a French spoken movie.

You should check out Chronos by Guillermo del Toro (Director of Hellboy) if you want to see Ron Perlman in a Spanish language movie. :)

And City of Lost Children is awesome.

Looks interesting, I'll have to check it out when its released. I don't know about Dreamfall though. I heard the story is great but the gameplay is sub-par. Hopefully this game will have good gameplay with good story.

Dreamfall is the reason why i brought the multiplatform thing up. The whole arcade shovebox-puzzle no-brainer design ruined the gameplay of one of the most promising adventure games ever. The consolation of broken mirror did the same thing. When they ported BM 1&2 to the consoles they were shitty to play cause you had to use your pad as a mouse which sucks. So they started making the adventures for consoles and basically killed them. Dont get me wrong i love consoles but point&clicks just dont belong there.

Been looking forward to this for aaaaaages. I hope they find a publisher, it's a pity publishers aren't willing to take risks with innovative new games.
