The latest episode of GameTrailers TV premiered last night and host Geoff Keighley spoke with Valve's Chet Faliszek where he revealed that some bad times are in store for the Left 4 Dead heroes. The Passing's newly revealed tag line, "Nobody Lives Forever," foreshadows what's to come.
With the upcoming Left 4 Dead 2 DLC, you'll be encountering only three of the Left 4 Dead survivors. Yes, one of the original four will be killed. With the Left 4 Dead DLC, you'll be playing through the events that lead up to the death and someone on the team will have to sacrifice their life so the rest can move forward.
Valve will also be releasing a couple of comics between the adventures. The comics are based on the two DLCs and present an idealized version of what happens to the survivors.
Player choices are becoming more and more integrated with games, but I don't think any videogame has done something to this level yet. You and your team will have to decide amongst yourselves who will have to make that ultimate sacrifice.

1) They've already said that Ellis develops a crush on Zoey and that Nick and Francis are constantly arguing.
2) Bill is old.
3) They couldn't get Bill's voice actor back for Crash Course. Go ahead and check - there are no new Bill lines in it.
However, they've said that in the Left 4 Dead 1 version of the DLC, you can choose who dies - but the comic and L4D2 DLC will have the canon version. Which will be Bill. No doubt.
Months from now when Valve pulls the statistic to see which survivor is sacrificed most often in the L4D1 DLC, it'll be Louis. Jim will then run a headline saying, "Left 4 Dead players are racist!"
Everyone thinks it'll be the old man, but I'm going against the grain here and guessing Louis. Reason being, he's Mr. Positive; he'll volunteer and say everything will work out fine, and the other three will let the poor dumb bastard go to his doom.

My guess is that the L4D2 DLC will determine who dies in the L4D1 DLC. Then when you play the L4D1 DLC, you will need to determine which player will play that survivor before you begin.
As for out of the L4D characters, instinct (plus someone's reasons above) suggest Bill, but I kind of like them way more than any from the second game. Seriously, I just bought it, and I only like Nick a bit. Can't stand Rochelle, never heard Coach say anything funny. Ellis I wouldn't want to be... So if you're reading this and not already dibs'd on a character...
