Unbeknownst to the rest of the free world, a few ingenious people over at Virtual Space Devices have been hard at work since 1996 on what they call an Omni-directional treadmill. So why should anyone other than Jamiroquai care? Well it appears that while this seems to scream "personal workout device" to the majority of you out there, the idea behind the madness has more to do with making your immersion into virtual reality one step closer to feeling like actuality.

Throw caution to the wind, and hit the jump for more on this.

If this isn't enough for you, their next device called iPlane, promises to let you experience the thrills of virtual flying. At first glance it seems a little crazy that anyone would want their videogames to involve this much physical activity, but Nintendo has shown us that casual gamers enjoy getting off the couch in droves -- all in the name of a good time. Who knows? With the right price point, a more compact design and a few quality games to back it up, this could be worth your while.

If nothing else, these two devices might actually lead to a killer personal flight sim game, or make those multiplayer matches a bit more interesting as out of shape players huff and puff across the maps in search of their prey. Watch in amusement as the marathon runners and sprinters punish all those would dare to oppose them.  As for me, give me a call when they have a great superhero game built around this thing. Until then, I'll just stand back and watch. You might want to consider renewing that gym membership.

The video makes it look a bit lethal, I imagine there'd be some way of knowing what direction its going to move before it changes (as I see no device on the guy testing it that controls the treadmills direction).

Bwhaha... I love that music video.

But this could definitely lead to some awesome gaming. No more of this standing in place, and wiggling our hips and ducking in synch to the on rails game. You'll actually be able to run from cover to cover. If they end up mapping player movement to in game movement. It'd be awesome. Screw even playing grounds. I'm skinny as hell, and I want an advantage over those fat slowpoke targets. Plus... imagine 1-1 mapping of TRUE facefucking movements.

I love Virtual Insanity as well. Don't tell the rest of the Dtoids, but it ranks in my top 3 videos of all time.

I gotta catch my breath after walking up the stairs. And it looks expensive.

Good Day.

Too late, Gameboi. The Internets know your secrets now.

My observation: with this used for movement, Morrowind would have been so much torture, it would have been unbelievable.

Also.. from what I'm reading, the iPlane is not plane as in air plane, but as in a surface. It's just the new name of the commercial version, not a flying version.

Pretty neat, but very clunky, I can't see this having any application in the gaming dept. aside from some super "rich indie" tech arcade machines. Brainwave tech is moving too rapidly to focus on "real world" virtual reality like this, when it comes to gaming anyway, IMO.

I would be having some trouble hitting the jump on that.

Well Japanese arcades can have this so I can imagine someone using this technology for an arcade.

Very nice! Does this mean holo-decks could be just around the corner?

No, no it doesn't. But very cool, nonetheless.

I LIKE where this is going! Next I want them to have contact lenses that project the screen right onto your eyes... which will also grant you depth perception in games! They aren't going to do it anytime soon but they damn well should!

Check out e-dimentional glasses. (or something). It's not contacts, but nor is it even really glasses, but it gives a sense of depth perception in games.

I came up with this idea years ago when i was a kid. They just got there with their money and their technology first. It wouldn't be a "personal workout device", it would be a way of making first person shooters a whole lot more intense. :D

I really want to see gamers get more active.

DDR and Nintendo Waggle(c) just doesn't cut it.
