OLD: Green Day track pack coming to Rock Band photo

We knew it. Really, we did. But now Harmonix and MTV Games (along with Warner Bros./Reprise) have announced that a Green Day track packs will be made available for Rock Band, starting on July 7.

The first packs (which will contain three songs) will feature “21 Guns,” “Know Your Enemy,” and “East Jesus Nowhere” from Green Day’s latest album, 21st Century Breakdown.

That’s all of the information we have right now, other than the rather vague ‘additional Green Day songs and projects will be announced at a later date.” It's also interesting to note that Green Day is coming "exclusively to Rock Band," which means you can scratch its name off your Guitar Hero 5 wish lists.

I won't bother until they release Good Riddance so I can sob deeply with all my friends and still get five stars.

Good.
I don't think I could've stomached a whole Green Day Rock Band...

Yeah uh... anything from the new album sucked. I think I'm going to wait to see something from Dookie, Warning, or AI.

If they have an American Idiot pack, I will be quite pleased. Feeling meh on playing their old stuff, but I'll buy it anyway.

Would someone please explain why everyone is hyping up the freaking track packs as if they are a huge expansion to Rock Band? It's Green Day, for God's sakes!! Not even that good!

@ BPG

Because anyone who grew up in the 90s was exposed to Green Day somehow, and whether you like them or not, they have a lot of songs that will be a hit at parties. This pack, though? Eh, not feeling it, since I haven't heard the new album yet. There was a long list of "leaked" songs, so I'm sure we'll be getting a lot of their back catalog eventually.

Also, despite preferring Rock Band, boo exclusivity.

I've already said it like 4 times today, on 8 different posts, but I'll say it again. Green Day fucking rocks. Now when can we get some NOFX or Dillinger Four? Ooh, ooh and The Get Up Kids, Hot Water Music, Lagwagon, Leatherface, Saves the Day (old stuff please), Screeching Weasle. Maybe some Vandals and some Turbonegro for kicks.

I assume you've been treated to the usual "Green Day are soulless, talentless sellouts" argument then?

On a basically related note, how is that Green Day's last few albums recieved so much critical acclaim and awesome reviews? Not just "It's really good!" but like winning Grammy's and shit. I've listened to them to figure out what the big deal was and though I wouldn't say they sucked, they're not much better than (if at all) what I hear from average local rock bands. DEFINITELY not Grammy worthy.

I know music is largely subjective but....I just don't get the overwhelming critical love.

I have to say, I'm actually pretty happy that "Know Your Enemy" is coming to Rock Band. My game needs more songs like that.

As for requests, I'll take "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "St. Jimmy" please! I'd also like another song off of 21st Century Breakdown ("Last Night on Earth"), but I imagine the following packs will concern other albums.

Maybe I would like them more if they didn't come off looking like total tools in all their pictures and videos. And it doesn't help their singer sings through his nose.

Sorry, just not a huge fan of the band. And I agree with Guitar's statement.

@GuitarAtomik - you said it best. Music is subjective. I can't understand how people can listen to Taylor Swift, but they do.

I've been into the "punk scene" since the early 90's, so I've always been into music that 99% of the population deems "bad" or offensive, or crass. It's what I love, and Green Day was just one of those bands I immediately connected with.

Now, whether or not they are Grammy worthy, well, that is strange. But then again, it's always strange to see bands like AFI and Alkaline Trio that I saw at venues where there were 20 people in attendance grow into stadium bands. The world is a topsy-turvy place.

No that's cool. Keep in mind I'm not trying to say Green Day sucks in general. If you like them, that's cool (hell, I like the majority of their early stuff), I'm mostly talking about the sudden critical adoration for them ever since they started dressing like the Alkaline Trio. I think I'm able to listen to music pretty objectively when I want to but I just don't get it in this case. That's all.

@GuitarAtomik:

I think what made American Idiot such a critical hit was the whole rock opera approach. The fact that every song is written to progress a story, develop characters and capture an atmosphere while actually writing good songs, including two 9 minute epics is what got them that acclaim. It may have been done before but I think no one expected anything like this from Green Day and the element of surprise emphasized how good the album is.

I love Green Day so I'll be picking this track pack up even though I would ave preferred some other tracks from the new album.

@GuitarAtomik - oh, no, no. I didn't think that for one second. I wasn't making that statement to defend Green Day or anything like that. More power to anyone who doesn't like Green Day (my wife HATES Green Day). I think what's most important is that people just love what they listen to. Music is such an important part of our lives, and whether you listen to country, opera, rock, techno, it doesn't matter, what matters is that you listen.

Sorry, that really just sounded like a "the more you know" moment...

@ PappaDukes: Saves The Day and Vandals in RB? You, sir, are a genius.

I'm a GD fan, but as I've not really heard the new stuff (aside from Know Your Enemy, which is...meh) I'm not all that excited about this announcement. Give me "Welcome To Paradise" and "Nice Guys Finish Last", though, and I will give you my money.

@Deathofthedead - I agree with you 100% (on the GD track pack comment, not with me being a genius. Trust me, I am far from that.)

I think their older stuff would make a bigger impression in RB overall, and a much bigger bulge in harmonix's pocket book. But in today's day and age, It's all about what is popular this minute, not what's most popular over all. It's kind of sad really, but hey, at least we get something to hold us over.

BUT GODDAMN PLEASE GIVE US SOME LIVE FAST DIARRHEA!!

I still don't see what's so bad about the new album, hell I love it (not as much as the others though . . .)

I do like Know Your Enemy, but 21 Guns was a rather bad choice (East Jesus Nowhere is OK)

99% of the population finds punk music offensive?

1950s America ended 50 years ago. Stop rebelling against it in 2009, when no one minds, and feeling edgy. No one finds punk music offensive anymore.

Green Day's music has matured. Apparently most of Destructoid hasn't. You guys need to quit "nostalgiaing" about old music from middle school and appreciate some stuff that's out now.

Green Day's music is has become stale and derivative and lacks the youthful exuberance that made them popular, unlike most of Destructoid. You guys oughta go back to "nostalgiaing"(?) about good music that came out while you were in middle school, and forget the lame shit that's out now.

@dprime - I was referring to the 90's, and if you don't think that punk was a considered a joke, at best, by society at large, then you were living in some kind of bubble. And yes, thanks to MTV, punk today is trendy and accepted by everyone. How times change.
