Okami for Wii = Internet WAAAAR!

Okami for Wii = Internet WAAAAR! photo
     Internet Matlocks

Everybody knows that the Internet is serious business, and nobody knows that better than Capcom, it seems. After the news broke about Okami heading to the Wii, many fans were ecstatic, but a fair number were far more cynical in their appraisal of the situation, crying laziness and yet more uninspired Wii ports. Is Capcom going to just let such people talk trash? Apparently not.

Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, decided to take on the critics at Capcom's official forums, defending the company's decision to develop an Okami remake on the Wii in a good old fashioned Internet rebuttal:

"We selected Ready at Dawn to do the port. These guys are all ex-Naughty Dog and ex-Blizzard. If we wanted a cheap and dirty port, I could have turned around and picked any one of 50 houses and gotten it done for less and perhaps more quickly. Clearly, that wasn't the approach we sought for a variety of reasons (for the fans, for the reputation of our company, for the potential of the product, etc.). Given that the only port we've done to date was RE4, which has a 90+ gamerankings score and provided AMAZING value for the platform, has this really been Capcom's modus operendi such that this allegation should be leveled at us?"

Svensson goes on to applaud such Wii efforts as Zak & Wiki, before adding that no additions to the Wii Okami have been announced because nobody's at a stage to make such announcements yet. He then defends the lack of extra content by saying: ""We've got no current plans to make a 40-60 hour game 50-70 hours."

Was Svensson right to take on the angry fans, or should he have hung back? Furthermore, do you feel he pwned some n00bs or epic failed? Either way, Internet wars are awesome, so let's all kick back and enjoy a nice toasty flame session.

[Thanks, Justin]

I think he should've hung back and chilled out. However, he owned those sacks of crybabies with his response.

Also, why would they add more content, regardless of new controls? You don't mess with a good thing. I know I wouldn't be happy if they remade Final Fantasy 7 and added a bunch of new shit, I like it just the way it was.

I am one of those that feels direct ports to the Wii are not what the system needs to attract more hardcore gamers (beyond Smash Bros. anyway). It needs original content from third parties that are more than mini-game collections. That's why i am upset it's coming over as a direct port.

And correct me if I'm wrong (like I need to ask for that on the Interwebs) but if they aren't at a point in development where they can announce extra content, then why the fuck did they say during the initial announcement that there would be ZERO extra content and that it would be the EXACT SAME game as the PS2 version (+subsequent waggle, of course)? They shouldn't get defensive because people who wanted to see more out of the port and/or the series have the right to be pissed.

Note: I only call it a series in hopes that one day a proper sequel is made.

Like I said, why add more to it? Why fix something if it's not broken. Added waggle controls for the Celestial Brush parts seem to be enough. No need for more content. Also, I expect many people who own a Wii have never played this game, like myself. So why should they miss out on a supposed great experience?

Speaking of Zack and Wiki, Destructoid should review it so I can digg it and spread the word of this incredible game.

If we Ready at Dawn were to do anymore more than add motion control and 480p and 16:9 (this is all I ask for) then we would not get the game out as early as spring 2008 and for a low price.

This is an amazing game, which I'm actually playing right now on PS2. Even if they release the exact same game, sans any new content, it should still be a must buy for Wii owners. It still brightens my day every time I revive a guardian sapling and that music comes on.

Porting a game to Wii without adding any features besides waggle is pretty much the definition of cheap and dirty, and pretty much par for the course for Wii's 3rd party line up.

Nooooooooo I love it on PS2, I don't like sharing with lesser consoles!

Though it will sell, given the gameplay (Chinese paintbrush etc.), and after all everyone knows how Nintendo loves monies.

...but I still won't like it... *grumble*

oh boy, they are having a good team port it, good for them. You know, they could have just never shut down the entire Clover Studio. But i mean, that would have been too hard. You know, the studio that is making these games that people care about.

Fuck that, Capcom just wants to make a quick buck with this port. They even said the only difference is going to be the Wii controls. They aren't going to pretty it up around the edges at all, even though the Wii could make it looks brighter and smoother. Capcom cocksuckers

Clover created games historically sell more on Nintendo platforms - for examples, see Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2. Anyway, there are tons of people who have not played this game, and the Wii does seem like a natural fit for the game. I am glad that nothing new is being added since Clover no longer exists. I'd rather have the game in the purest form possible - hopefully with 480p, 16:9 support. And, from what I've seen, the graphics are fine the way they are.

I'm in for one.

Capcom is responsible for bringing us Zak and Wiki... that gives them more than a few passes to make a few easy ports in my book but Z&W is 3rd party GoTY so far easily for the Wii.

What the complainers are forgetting (or choosing to ignore) is that this is the first port to the Wii we ACTUALLY ASKED FOR.

How many Wii owners were begging for Godfather or Scarface, or just the last game in the Prince of Persia trilogy? Even RE4 wasn't really anticipated. Thought Capcom had the foresight to sell it at a bargain price, unlike the other ports.

So people are whining about a game that nobody bought. If these so-called "hardcore gamers" would have bought the game already they wouldn't be bitching about getting a port.

Well, they could add new bosses instead of making you fight Orochi three fucking times.

The fights don't change at all! That was the only thing about the game that bothered me.

Epic Fail. It's Modus OperAndi, not OperEndi.

All jokes aside, I don't know why you are all defending them. They should at least add a few extra levels, or clean up the picture, or add 16:9, or something. No one should ever be applauded for Direct Ports.

If they are adding that stuff, I respectfully back down ;)

Ted, Capcom has been awesome in the this console generation. As for why they can't keep Clover Studios open, have you ever taken a business or economics class? It simply didn't make enough money. Anytime you are paying people more than they bring in for you, you're in trouble. Be intelligent and think of the business ramifications. This is the real world, not some fantasyland where cash doesnt exist.

Well shit, I'm convinced! I was going to call this thing a slack lazy port, but Capcom seem to be pretty clear this is not the case.

I think I'll actually keep an eye on this game now.

I personally would not want more content due to the fact the game was already long enough. Just give me some celestial wiimote drawing madness and I will be more than happy. That was the one area where the ps2 controller really showed its crummy analog stick sensitivity.

Cheers!
