I think it would be a stretch to say I'm "cautiously optimistic" about House of the Dead: Overkill for the Wii. When reports were floating around that a Swedish magazine gave the game a relatively abysmal three out of ten, I didn't think that was due to a printer-smudged "eight." Mediocrity doesn't seem unlikely.

But I haven't played it yet -- that will have to wait until next week at New York Comic Con -- so I'll withhold my final judgment. Still, I must admit that it's kind of hard not to be excited about this game, a tongue-in-cheek homage to the grindhouse horror flicks and B-movie schlock that I grew up with.

In this first of what I'm sure will be a few behind-the-scenes docs, the guys at Headstrong Games definitely seem like they "get it." And if Overkill doesn't take itself too seriously, neither will I. I'm just looking to kick back, shoot a few zombies in the face, and have a good time. That's not too much to ask, really. And I'm hoping that maybe it was a smudged eight. Because that, you know, happens. Really.

After I heard that the game only takes s few hours to play through, my hopes for HotD:O dropped substantially. I know that none of the HotD games have been particularly long, but after being spoiled by RE:UC and it's +10 hour length, I just assumed that HotD:O would follow suit.

The game doesn't look graphically terrible. And it's a light gun game where you shoot down zombies. What is there to get wrong? If the cursor moves with the wiimote, and when you press the button a hit is registered where the cursor lies, well how can you mess that up? I don't see how any light-gun game can rate less than a five unless they were really trying to make it terrible.

I'm curious to see how this could rate such a low score if it is, indeed, deserved. Has anyone learned to speak Scandinavian (or whatever language that review is in) yet?

I'm going to pick it up if it debuts at thirty dollars or so. I'd imagine that they scored it low for a lack of length and depth Haxan, but I do not speak the language.

HotD hasn't taken itself seriously for years. I don't know if it really did at all, but hey. If the Typing of the Dead games are anything, or English of the Dead, etc...

I'll pick it up when it drops in price. Looks like fun in short bursts.
