Oh, Microsoft: Lode Runner mispriced, customers insulted photo

In today's wacky episode of That's Our Microsoft, the company introduced Lode Runner to Xbox Live Arcade at 800 Microsoft Points, a full 400 Points lower than people had expected. Unfortunately, it turns out that Microsoft had made a balls up of things once again, and has since altered the price to 1200 Points. D'aaaawr, that's our Microsoft!

"If you got it at 800 points, you're lucky," is all Major Nelson can say with the news that Microsoft upped the price a day after releasing it. As one can expect, the Xbox Live community is not happy at all, especially as a number of them were singing XBLA's praises for such an unexpected and welcome low price. Thankfully, Microsoft acted quickly to stamp out any rumors of generosity.

Once again I should point out that before Braid and Castle Crashers, this game would most likely have been released at 800 Points and stayed there. I'm still a little disgusted that MS held its best games to ransom like that, and now thinks it can get away with charging 1200 Points for anything it sees fit. Nonsense like this Lode Runner fiasco just exposes the farce of MS Points even more.

I used to work at a place where the we'd price the service based on the client's budget, not what the work was actually worth. Before that, I worked at a place where we charged by what the work was actually worth and our client would resell it to what they thought the client would pay.

Moral of the story? Start your own company :)

Eh, they'll price it what people will pay. It worked for Braid, of which Microsoft was the Publisher. With Castle Crashers, I'm thinking it's more along the lines of why Penny Arcade was priced high, to meet development costs and not just to piss off gamers.

Hopefully less people will pay for titles at 400 points more, and maybe Microsoft will get the message. But I really doubt that.

I was actually playing the demo after I woke up and it was at 800 points. I promised myself to buy it cause it was a good demo. I come back an hour later, gone.

What a load of shit, it should've at least been 800 for the entire day. Or it should be next week's "Deal of the Week", cause the deals now are so terrible.

I certainly stopped buying XBLA games. Braid was the last one, and personally not worth the extra chunk of change to me. There was a time when I was buying up just about every piece of crap they threw on the system (Assault Heroes? ugh), but now I barely even look at the trials anymore.

1200 MS points is how much real money?

Braid and Castle Crashers felt like premium titles WORTH paying for. This is not.

@Naim

1200 points is $15. Your not knowing the actual amount is the deception that MS trades in. The less consumers are aware of what they're spending, the less it "feels" like it actually costs.

MS should make good on this and drop the price down for the week and let people who were going to buy at 800 have that chance. Otherwise, Lode Runner's gonna just sit there stagnating until it goes on sale.

There's no reason Flock, Death Tank, R-Type Dimensions, and Lode Runner need to be 50% more expensive than the average game. 1200 really is the new 800, despite the quality of the game. Capitalism is supposed to benefit the consumer through competition that leads to lower prices and higher quality; we're not seeing that at all - yet.

I hope Amazon.com's Arcade store continues selling games at periodic discounts. Hell, they should open up an Amazon-PSN store while they're at it and do the same for that.

Indeed, we should all just vote with our wallets. Show MS that Lode Runner is not worth 1200 points.

@Arttemis

I can see only R-Type Dimensions as being 1200 because it's 2 games in one, switching between HD and old school graphics, and online play.

Everything else (besides Lode Runner) is pure shit. I agree, I hope Amazon has this on sale soon.

I was planning on getting this as well after playing the demo and seeing it was 800 points, but now I can't really justify paying 1200 for a game I can get a dozen versions of elsewhere for far cheaper or even free.

I have Lode Runner for phone for crying out loud! And there are actually people buying it for 15 bucks?! The world has gone to hell.

yeah what about connect 4 and battleship being 10 dollars... EACH. the only game i have paid that much for were/are going to be banjo kazooie and tooie. because those are full games with more content than some full games.

This is exactly why I was upset with the increased XBLA pricing that started last summer. It's not that Briad and its ilk weren't worth $15, it's that those games set the precedent to increase XBLA prices generally. Penny Aracde, at $20, may be the worst offender of all.

XBLA games used to be $5 or $10--perfect impulse buys. Now there is a constant barrage of garbage $10 titles and the rare gem that will cost you $15. I'm not cheap--I have well over 40 retail 360 games, but I have flatly refused to purchase a single XBLA game over 800 points. It's a shame, I was actually looking forward to playing this game.

I don't mind the occasional increased-price game (castle crashers is a good example of something that's obviously WORTH the increase) but $15 is pretty much becoming the standard on Live for any and all games that you might actually want.

That's just lame.

Oh, and Lode Runner isn't even CLOSE to worth the upped price.

I was thinkingof buying it then the price went up....Iwas shocked but I blamed my poor memory, glad to know I'm not crazy :)

Lode Runner isn't worth 1200....I'm sure sales will prove that real soon. I guess I can go ahead and get Bionic Commando for 800

I got the demo. I'm not even sure it's worth 800 points, frankly. It plays like a bastardized version of the original. I don't think it has all the classic levels, which I believe it should.
