Official QWERTY keyboard attachment coming to 360 controllers

     Microsoft

Mute Xbox 360 gamers with fat hands and tiny fingers, rejoice!

It seems an official attachable keyboard for the 360 controller is on the way. Gamespot, who post the story earlier today, has since yanked the post. Still, the eyes and ears of the internet are not easily deceived.

From their MIA story:

While Microsoft's Xbox 360 Spring Update will integrate Windows Live Messenger into the system's dashboard for cross-platform chatting, the machine's text-window interface for standard control pads makes lengthy conversations a chore.

To ease the task of typing in messages without the aid of a full-sized keyboard, Microsoft today announced a new text input device for the Xbox 360 controller. The attachment snaps onto the bottom of the controller through the headset jack and features a QWERTY-style key layout with 47 keys.

This is not the first time we've seen this attachment, as it originally appeared on a slide show during a Microsoft presentation back in 2005. While a price has yet to be announced (neither has the peripheral, for that matter...), Gamespot mentioned a summer release date. You know, before the magical PR fairy came and yanked the story.

Oops.

I've played many games using that oofball Gamecube keyboard controller, and that only supported ONE game. This 360 keyboard will be supported by lots of existing dashboard functions and new ones.

I think this is a great idea.

Oh hells yes, the Atari Jaguar pad has been reborn!!!!

Seriously though, I can't see myself using this but it's nice to have the option.

is that the actual pictures they have? or a concept? cause the headset wouldn't hook into that. haha. and if it is the basic idea, it appears as if the actual controller size has been kept the same. and where you actually grip is kept the same proportion. which is nice. just cut the weight of it and it could be a nice inclusion.

ohgr89 -
I'm assuming it's the concept because the have the round port for the headset but not the "slits" on each side.

lol newton64, don't get too excited. I never owned a Jaguar (one of the few systems I never did) but I immediately thought of the Jaguar pad when I saw this.

You missed the T in QWERTY!
As for the pad itself... is that really what it will look like? I'd much rather have one that plugs in via a wire, so it doesn't get in the way of the hands.

Why don't they just... you know... release a real keyboard?

BTW, Blindside - I frickin' LOVE that soccer (futbol) avatar of yours. I meant to say something about it a while ago, but I never did. Hilarious.

I like Live Messenger better than AIM, but almost no one I know has it. If the 360 was to support AIM then I'd be incredibly happy to finally not need my glitchy slow computer for pretty much anything except surfin the web. I probably wont buy the QWERTY controller though since i already have a usb keyboard attached to my 360. This could turn out to be a great update though.

This is a 'shop job if I've ever seen one.

Actually, it's not a 'shop -- it's a fucking render.

I call BS.

If this is a cheap add on, I'll probably buy one when I find it used, or when some crack head trades it in at the game store in town, I'll just have my friend pay him a few bucks for it and get it really cheap.
But honestly, I just unplug my computer keyboard and plug it in my 360, which doubles in purpose to keep my mom off my computer.

Yeah... That "render" isn't even correct. For an "Add-on" they rendered it without any seam to the controller, and when holding a controller up to the screen to match shape, it doesn't even line up. Lazy microsoft.

probably not real, looks more like a render than a photoshop job like some others here said. But if they make something resmbling that only smaller and such for under $20, then im sold
