Official LOTR Online info released; pre-order program detailed photo

Even though we got a bit of a scoop late last night/early morning on when Lord of the Rings Online would come out (April 24), what I didn't want to get into was what the pre-order program would be like for the game -- which if you're a fan, you and your wallet will be very happy. Check it out:

Turbine, Inc. and Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY) today announced the details of the revolutionary pre-order Founder’s Program for The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar.

This exciting Founder’s Program rewards all players who pre-order The Lord of the Rings Online with special $9.99 monthly subscription pricing, early access to the game (beta version), character roll-over and unique in-game bonus items. Players can become a Founder by pre-ordering the title at www.lotro.com/preorder or at retail stores nationwide beginning February 1, 2007.  This limited-time offer is exclusively available to pre-order customers.

The Lord of the Rings Online Founder’s Program* offers players two different membership options: Only $9.99 per month subscription price!  OR Just $199 for a Lifetime Membership!

There's even more after the jump, including info on rolling over your open beta character to the real game.

In addition to these special pricing options, The Lord of the Rings Online Founders receive:

Open Beta: Guaranteed access provides Founders the first opportunity to create a character and enter Middle-earth currently planned for March 30, 2007

Character Roll-Over:  Moves the character that you created during the Open Beta into the live service —along with the stats, levels, items, and experience that character earned prior to launch!

Bonus Items:  Two special in-game items that are only available to those who pre-order: Enchanted Cloak of Regeneration, Ring of Agility

This exciting Founder’s Program is available for a limited time until the commercial launch of The Lord of the Rings Online (currently scheduled for April 24, 2007).

Yeah, DDO is still goin, so with the amount of money and time pumped into LOTRO, don't expect it to fade away fast. Hell, isn't Auto Assault still up and running?

Lifetime... that's nice. I mean, you pay the normal price, pre-order for a year (basically) and then you can play for free after that year.

Interesting concept.

This is an MMO?

The Lifetime option is really interesting. On the other hand, makes you think do they plan to keep it running that long? Do they plan to not have so many patches/updates because the monthly fee will be so low? Do they plan to one day make it free to play?

Sure LOTR would have some cash to back it up, but they could end up like guildwars which is a fun game, but nothing to crazy and the option of buying new patches/expacs. It's something to think about to myself.

If you read the games features it seems like this game is the first in a trilogy of updates/expansion packs that will further the storyline of the game (episodic content?). So I worry the $199 lifetime feature won't cover expansion packs or second/third generation games with different titles.

If the $199 for a lifetime is in fact genuine that would be fantastic I'm sure any WoW player you asked would gladly pay $199 to never have to pay again.

If something sounds too good to be true...

I haven't heard about this game for quite a while. But I was just checking it out and it actually looks pretty neat. And their preorder deals are really good compared to other MMOs. They must really be trying to sell this game. Now if only Blizzard was nice and lowered their monthly fee.

I have to admit, if you play this games as long as people play other MMOs then the $199 is a good deal. Or if you were me, you would buy 4 new games for the same price.
