Official Castlevania anime blog assures me that everything will be OK photo

Video game fans are very protective of their favorite properties, and with good reason. Having endured one adapted disaster after another, it's not out of the question to think that a direct to DVD anime of Castlevania could end in heartache and tears.

Bringing Warren Ellis, a writer with a brilliant track record, on board was a step in the right direction. Having an open dialog with fans about the production is another.

The official production blog for the animated film (based off of the NES favorite, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse) is an open and honest discussion of production decisions (reasons for omitting characters and story elements), as well as their plans for the future of the series (it will be told across three films).

But it was this next passage, taken from one of Ellis' recent postings that made me plop down cash for some Castlevania t-shirts and set up a tent in front of my local SunCoast video:

CASTLEVANIA is, therefore, Not For Children.

What does this mean in practise? Does this mean blood up the walls, people hitting each other with heavy sacks full of abortions, the leathery flap and unf of vampire skullf**king and seemingly unending scenes of tentacle rape?

Well… what’s it worth to you? Let’s see some money. The line forms over there on the right.

[Thanks for the tip, Necros!]

Wait.

Is it a Japanese OVA, or is it a straight-up, American, straight-to-dvd animation? Because I was pretty sure I knew what it was until Warren Ellis showed up, and now I'm a little confused.

Woot! Thankage!

I found it funny that's he's pissed at IGA for making him rewrite stuff over and over; the fact that IGA approves its canonicity gives me really high hopes. Castlevania is IGA's baby, and Castlevania III is his favorite in the series, so I doubt he'll let it stray far from the source material. The story could easily be expanded upon anyways.

Not to be pedantic or anything(that's a lie, pedantry ftw), but if it's made in the west, by westish people, it en't an anime.

Good that ellis is working on it though. Transmet kicks rocks.

Well, what if it's done in the style of anime? And all of the animators are Japanese? And the music is done by a Japanese person? What then?

A trilogy based on Castlevania III, written by Warren Ellis? Anime or not, this has potential.

Nick: It has to be created in moon language to appease the rabid horde of anime purists. This is written by some stupid gaijin after all. It cannot be anime, it's blasphemy.

j/k psycho anime fanboys/girls. But not really.
