Ocarina of Time reclaims number one game ranking

Ocarina of Time reclaims number one game ranking photo
     wii

For a while, Nintendo crown jewel Super Mario Galaxy had become the highest ranked game of all time, beating out The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and breaking a nine year streak for the N64 classic. Well, a new review of Galaxy has come along and, like a fiendish pooper of parties, reduced Galaxy's overall score down by a mere few percent on Game Rankings, just enough to allow Link a leg back up to the top.

Ocarina is now at number one again, but its streak was broken for a short period. Can it last another nine years on top, or will Super Mario Galaxy squeak back into dominance? The two games are essentially neck-and-neck with OoT at 97.6% and Galaxy at 97.3%. All we need is another review to tip the balance back in the spacefaring plumber's favor.

It's a good day to be Nintendo, at any rate.

I can't honestly believe somebody would actually review a 9-year-old game just to boot it back to the top of an arbitrary list.

Some people have far too much time on their hands.

The review wasn't of Zelda, it was of Galaxy. I'm going to clarify that in the post.

Get clarifying Jim, you don't want to piss off salivating fanboys who haven't eaten in 3 days to make room for turkey. They're a frothy bunch, and by 'frothy' I mean 'starved, rabid and insane'

Rainbow, I think Galaxy is a WAY better game than Ocarina.

If I were a reviewer, I'd give Galaxy a 9.8, and Ocarina a 7.5. In short, Ocarine is extremely boring to play at times due to the bland graphics, minutes upon minutes of footwork with little sense of purpose and even less to entert But most of all, OoT really tries to be nothing more that A Link to the Past in 3D, adding little to nothing to the Zelda formula. And no, becoming a "Grown Up", and losing half your weapons doesn't add to the Zelda formula. If anything, it detracts from the game.

I feel like OoT was a rough draft of Zelda in 3D, Majora's Mask was an experiment (and an awesome one at that. A far superior experience to OoT), Wind Waker was a half finished attempt to fix OoT, and Twilight Princess actually did the job right.

I loved TP, but barely liked OoT.

*Flame sheilds on*.

I don't think its a matter of specifically giving the game a bad score to bring it down. If anyone recalls last year at this time Twilight Princess was number 2. Now its way down on the list at number 33. Its more a matter of the best reviews hitting the site first. This may be due to biased reviewers influenced by the company who want the game reviewed prior to release to build the hype, or by the Fanboys who hardly play the game before voting or reviewing it as 10/10. Either way, give it time. I wouldn't ber surprised if Galaxy dropped even more.

Also note that this list does not accurately measure the "best game of all time" It is more a measure of "the best game since the N64/PSX era. The list defaults at a minimum of 20 reviews required. There is not a single SNES or Genesis or Gameboy or NES game with that many reviews. Not that changing this minimum number to 5 adds 4 new games to the top 10: Super Mario World (SNES), Super Metroid (SNES), Starcraft: Brood War (PC) and Metal Gear Solid (GBC).

It's important to keep in mind that though I really like having access to a list like this, it should be taken with a grain of salt.

As someone who dearly loves OoT, I have to say I think galaxy is a better game. I prefer the zelda format to platformers, but I've simply never played a game as damn near flawless in every respect as ur mr gay.

Well, I doubt it will go below Metroid. Not sure it can go back up to #1.

Either way, the charts show that Nintendo puts out the highest rated games every generation.

It's not the best game by today's standards. But game reviews should be done based on a game's own merit, not compared to other games. Not all reviewers do that so aggregations of ratings are never a real indication of anything.
webrunner's Avatar
webrunner at 11/22/2007 13:34
At the time when Ocarina came out, scores tended to not be out of 5 as often, and there were more places doing /10 with halves, or even /100 scores. Before, a near perfect game would get 95/100, now it just gets 9/10

@tron knotts... really? Twilight Princess? There was nothing ground-breaking about that game. Ocarina might not seem special today but for its time it could be compared to nothing. Furthermore, we were all younger when it came out which makes it inherently better, because the world is just a bit more magical when you're young. That's exactly why super mario bros 3 was the greatest game in the world when it came out, AND NOW, and if it came out now and not then it would be garbage. TP is mediocre for its time and will eventually be forgotten.

Well. That was fast.

@ Kyousuke
I call shenanigans. Ocarina was much more important, impactful, and "the best" at the time it came out, but overall, Twilight Princess is the much more polished game, even if it owes much of its structure to its spiritual predecessor.

@ webrunner
Um, most places like IGN still use scores like 9.5, basically keeping the ?/100 scale still in place, which is ridiculous. I'm personally in favor of using single numbers out of 10, but until then, I'm fine with increments of .5 until fanboys can get over the difference between a 9.6 and a 9.7.

The problem with reviews is that they are only relevant at the point of time they were reviewed. Of course a 9 year old game won't be as good as it once was, there have been advances in all areas of games since then.
