Obsidian developing Fallout: New Vegas for 2010 photo

If the Twitterverse is to be believed, Obsidian -- currently working on Sega's Alpha Protocol -- is currently developing a new, "non-sequel" to Fallout 3 title for Bethesda Softworks.

The game, entitled Fallout: New Vegas, is slated to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2010. Little details are known about the game, save for that it will retain the gameplay style of last year's award-winning Fallout 3.

The info comes from Bethesda's press event, which is currently taking place in London. Our own Dale North is on the scene, but hasn't hit his Twitter to drop any juicy details. But other people most certainly have

Our guess is we'll hear (and see) more details soon, so stay tuned. In the meantime, start thinking about the posibilities, and get excited.

Wow, the people of post-apocalyptic Nevada must be crazy for the word "New". I just hope there are references of New Reno.

I am getting tired of "standalone" expansion packs though.

Oh Dear God I almost exploded...

I hope to god this is true...I mean they HAVE to put Chris Avellone onto this project.

I just get all giddy at the thought of Black Isle Studios-Redux making another Fallout Game...Fallout 2 was utter brilliance.

Damn...this is just the PERFECT news

According to Pete Hines, it's not going to be a standalone expansion. It's an entirely new game that has no impact on what Bethesda is planning with the license.
That being said, I just want One old school RPG in the fallout universe...pretty please? PC gaming isn't dead, it really isn't.

@Vrynix - Dragons Age: Origins looks pretty old school, I'm looking forward to that a lot.

More Fallout = good in my book.

I got bored of the deary Falloutverse before I even beat the original Fallout 3. You couldn't pay me to play The Pitt. And New Vegas? I'll withhold judgment until we see what it's all about, but I'm guessing more brown color palates and exploding heads. yay?

Obsidian did KOTOR2 and that was really awesome, though admittedly not as good as the first. Therefore I don't see any reason at this point why we should be pessimistic.

Maybe they could patch in facial expressions for the characters. Oh and some of the voice acting was terrible, that guy that does the mercenary's voice on the roof (and other voices) either lacked emphasis or put them on the wrong words. Sure the writing was decent, but a lot of characters lacked...character.

pick a new location, New Reno was enough of Nevada. I dont want a New Vegas, unless its filled with mutant street walkers or I can get the perk/title of Gigilo. A large portion of the US has been covered... what happened to the rest of the world??

I think I'll pass. Fallout 3 is the last Bethesda game I'm going to pay for. The PC version is riddled with bugs and glitches that Bethesda haven't fixed for months, and the only patching we get is achievements for the new paid DLC.

Frequent crashes, VATS is broken and the Pipboy music is all distorted as hell. These are very, very common issues and Bethesda haven't once acknowldged them.

I wonder if Obsidian will change the combat system to something deeper than "Hurr hurr his head go boom" multiplied by infinity.

@Timmeh

Well have fun then, I've not expereinced a single bug and I'm running unpatched.

The only one was the music distorted for my Pipboy, and that was a codec issue that I fixed with the MADFilter.ax driver.

But yes Bethesda tends to have a fair share of really minor bugs in their games due to simply the size of their world and how shitty the engine they use for everything is.

They broke VATS in a patch, that's probably why you haven't seen it, it's broken for everyone who has updated their game.

I wouln't really call stuff like that or audio problems minor but whatever. They are lazy bastards who didn't bother to fix well known, well documented bugs from Oblivion, never mind fixing things they broke post-release.

Thank god it's out of Bethesda's hands. Fallout 3 might be the most broken game I've ever played, even more so than Morrowind. Bethesda had some good ideas, but they just don't have the technical skill to pull off a game like this.

obsidian is obviously the best choice, considering that's where most of the ex black isle employees ended up. if you already knew that, then i figure you must have preferred fallout 3 to the previous games in which case, go ahead and blow those brains out.

Now Obsidian is in charge, which is far closer to the original team than ANYTHING Interplay has to offer. Is everybody happy?

I honestly loved fallout 3, although there are a few hitches, the level cap, and game-ending main questline were the obvious points here, but also the non RPG'ishness of it.

Yes you could choose your starting attribute points and there were perks leveling up, but in terms of equipment, there really was only 5-6 weapons i used, and up untill power armor, you allways defaulted to using whatever has the highest def rating.

I have recently tried the fallout overhaul kit V1.6, and i highly recomend it to anyone who feels that FO3 was too little like its predecessors, it adds stat modifiers to ALL equipment, and adds in well over 50 new weapons(varying degrees of wear), and over a dozen new ammo types.

All in all, a way more RPG'ish feel, but onto the article, I think if the current dev's actually pay attention to what key game mechanics, and plot elements endeared gamers to FO 1/2, they should be able to pull of a decent fallout game.
Drowkin's Avatar
Drowkin at 04/22/2009 17:46
Heh, reminds me when I put FO3 in my PS3 (yeaaaah I know, bad choice, but I didn't have a 360 back then) and told myself : "OMG I can't wait to see what gigantic-gambler-junkie-town-run-by-mafia-town they made !"

I guess I don't need to tell you how disappointed I was. Still, I really liked FO3, even if there's a few things I disliked, I enjoyed the experience with all my heart. If you ask me, FO: New Vegas, in comparison with FO3, needs better dialogues/voice acting and moral choices that REALLY affect the world and keeps you from completing all the quests in one playthrough. I found it kinda awkward to kill half of Rivet City, come back two days later, and hear something like : "Baaad boy, don't do it again please. Ok ? Go on then, we still like you".

Anyway, GO OBSIDIAN GO !
Oh... and bring back the Childkiller reputation please.

@ Psycho

Unfortunately, Fallout 3 is the only incarnation of the series I have played, and I did enjoy it. The only downside is that I have only played 2 Obsidian titles, KotOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2, both of which I thought the stories and gameplay were terrible. I'm going to give the new Fallout game a try *shivers* but I really don't have high-hopes for it.
