Oblivion engine headed to the Wii. Gamebryo goes Nintendo photo

Now here's an interesting little slice of news. I'm sure many of you are familiar with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Bethesda's opus is still highly regarded for its ambition, scope and, of course, size. I find it ironic, then, that the engine that powered it, Gamebryo, has now been licensed for use on Nintendo's Wii, famed for not being such a powerhouse.

Not to bash the little console that could, of course. I just find it funny that the engine that powered Oblivion is now hitting the Wii, and wonder what it will bring. It's obvious we won't see something as beautiful and huge as Oblivion, but hopefully it will bring some solid third party support. We can only patiently wait and see if Gamebryo bears fruit on Nintendo's system.

Oblivion with waggle would be sweet. It would certainly make the whole "run around, slash, cast, run around" theme at least a LITTLE more interesting over the course of 150 hours.

Everyone I've ever heard that used it said that Gamebryo was a nightmare to work on, actually, and without the texture/lighting/polygon pushing power of the 360 or ps3 it'll not look anything like oblivion anyway.

I was hoping there would be an Elder Scrolls for the Wii, hopefully this will be close to that wish.

Throw in the balance board for defense controls, and I'm sold!

Well, it might be the same engine but the games will still look like crap. Porting an engine = same graphics on different platform.

I'm sure there's more optimized engines out there for developers for the Wii.

Oblivion was a lagg-fest, even with a graphicscard that could run other pretty games with high fps. :P

I don't have the link, but I read that it's going to be scaled down on the Wii, because the Wii CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH... i mean it can't handle the original engine.

Hopefully this really pushes what the Wii can do graphically (and does it well). I'd really like to see something close to the upper limits of what it can handle.

I'm hoping they push for a large epic game instead of worrying so much about graphics. That was the problem I had with Bioshock and Gears Of War, beautiful, but way too damn short.

You guys should be more openminded. After seeing what some unknown guys did on DS with Dementium, there's no reason why we couldn't see something similar on Wii, even with this engine. Its all down to how much the developers want to put in, to get out of Wii.

this isn't really a big deal, considering that this engine also supports PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamebryo#Description

Does anyone remember the "Oldblivion" mod? It turned off just about every graphical bell and whistle so you could play it on a low end machine. It basically made Oblivion look like Quake 2.
