NYCC: Street Fighter X Tekken Gem system revealed photo

Yesterday at Capcom's New York Comic-Con panel for Street Fighter X Tekken, producer Yoshinori Ono unveiled the game's new Gem System. And I'll be straight with you: Some of the audience groaned. Some heckled. But the world of fighting games is like that, isn't it?

The truly outrageous Gem system gives fighters power-ups that they can mix and match. You'll be able to choose from dozens of gems that modify abilities and stats. This lets you sort of cover your ass with perks -- it's like Materia (Final Fantasy VII) for your fighter! More groans? Those are my fault.

With this system you'll start out with a combination of Attack, Defense, Speed, Cross Gauge, and Assist gems. As you'd guess, having the Defense gem on increases your fighter's defense stats. That's exactly what casual players like myself have been needing, and according to Ono, that is exactly the point of this new feature. He's working to bring this game to as many gamers as possible.

Other news tidbits came out of the event. First, a release date: March 6, 2012. Also, a PC version of Street Fighter X Tekken is being worked on. Finally, Street Fighter's Rufus has been added to the line-up.

Gems, huh? What do you think about this new system?

I'm not too crazy about it, but I'd love to see how it shapes the metagame.

Fully supported. However, there's quite a few mechanics in this game to keep track of. I worry for balance.

Doesn't sound too bad - until you realize that they're all preorder bonuses or paid DLC, and they refused to comment to people asking if you could unlock them just by playing the game. They also said theres no option for not using gems - you can not pick them, but you'd be dumb not to because you can't stop your opponent from doing so.

I don't expect it to be too balanced, either. It'll probably be like MW2 where theres tons of perks but everyone just picks stopping power anyway.

I am a little sceptical about this, being able to pay for them seems a little scummy and I have a feeling that this will wreck the balance.

As long as you have the option of just turning it off, I'm all for it.

Never underestimate Capcom's innate ability to trash any semblance of balance.

lets just wait and see shall we? people talking about balance to me always seem silly. fighters will never be truly balanced. it can't happen, it just can't. stop worrying about it. just hope that who ever is strong is not crazy strong and that the lower tier is some where near the top.

Balance is a lie.

I'd imagine that they would include an option to turn it off anyway, and most of the hardcore competitive crowd would refuse to use it and stand together from atop their mighty gamer towers and scoff at the little peasants who have to play with little gems to win.

There should be both gem-supported mode and no gems allowed mode then.

This is definitely a feature you can turn on/off, and I welcome it. Super Gem Fighters was awesome.

I am still in a state of "Not sure if want" on this gem system..

We'll see if that changes on March 6th

Look at those POWER STONES!

I'm guessing if you were a FIGHTER,they'd go in your POCKET.

Those EMRALDS will draw some CHAOS in the fighting game community.

This game feels like an INFINITY waiting for it to customize GEMS.

Yeah let's allow stat building/grinding into a genre known for its competitive arcade style play! What could possibly go wrong!

I'm not sure if this is a cool feature, but in my opinion this can't sound more like a ripoff if u need to buy them, and the thing that there are exclusive gems.

I can't be happy about a victory when I had an advantage like that.

Make it a feature for casual mode, or just for singleplayer, so that new people have an easier start, or at least give everyone the same gempool to choose from.
Exclusives in a 1on1 Multiplayergame are just nuts.

As long as you can turn them off.

Also rumored is that some gems are a miss fit for some characters, and will actually have a negative effect on their status.

The upside is their songs are better.

This sounds like a clusterfuck of bad ideas. Considering they put out 3 iterations of SF4, each more unbalanced than the last, and the fact the MvC3 roster is almost as fucked as MvC2 (no thanks to X-factor), I would be utterly shocked if any character is a match for any other character.

No report on the other three teased characters? The consensus amongst youtube commenters seems to be that they are Paul, Law, and Xiaoyu. I assume that if there's a Xiaoyu then there would be a Panda skin for Kuma, which I would personally enjoy.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for Eddy/Christie and Lei though. Maybe future DLC.

Well, I already thought this game was going to be a clusterfuck, so adding in some Super Gem Fighter to the mix seems appropriate.

I mean, both SSFIV and TTT2 are in the "Serious competition" business, so the only way to set this apart is to make it batshit insane.

Also, from what I've seen of this game, Street Fighter fans should be right at home, but Tekken fans are going to hate it. Every SF character plays exactly the way you would expect them to, but the Tekken cast has a huge learning curve.

My guess is that basically all of Tekken cast is going to have serious difficulties competing with the Shotos.

This is one of those things that has a large chance of failing, horribly. But also has a chance of turning out brilliantly...

If the gems are balanced, if they don't break the game, we could see mirror matches where players are able to face off with completely different, yet legitimate, builds. The individuality could be an incredible addition.

I am worried, I won't lie; but I also see the huge potential.

I was way on board, but then I saw that SE. Paying for these is not cool. I get it, from a business standpoint, but I don't fucking like it. And I probably won't buy them. Also, lol @ Baby Choo Choo.

Also considering that a lot of those are pre-order boni or exclusive to the collector's edition, this sounds like one of the worst ideas to come out of Capcom's fighting game division in a while, and that's not a feat you can accomplish easily.
If you can just turn it off, it's still all good though.

I'm for it. Customization is a good thing. We've all thought to ourselves: Hey, I like this movelist and I think this game would be absolutely perfect if this character' had a little more punch/a little more speed/a little more defense/etc, and now we can do that.

Not to mention the fact that this will make changing up the metagame easy. Too many players rely on rote memorization, and this will throw that into question, which is a good thing.

It'll be as simple as turning them off, Capcom have made poor decisions recently yes, but I don't think they're COMPLETE idiots.

At any rate this will be good for training etc. Learn to do one thing whilst covering your other weaknesses.

It will also be quite handy for when I force my non-fighting gamer friends to play fighters with me. I'll have no gems, they can have gems. Suddenly an equal playing ground.

I dunno, remember that Marvel Super Heroes arcade game with the Infinity Gems? That was really fun, but they did break the balance of the game a little...

Best part is knocking out the soul (life recover) green gem from your opponent and scrambling to use it lol...
