NY gamers holding anti-violence rally; we're like Gandhi, but with better aim photo

CNET has a story about a rally being held May 5th at 1PM in New York City's Bryant Park in reaction to the horrific tragedy that took place at Virginia Tech only a few days ago. Empire Arcadia, a gaming-focused community group, has created the rally (under the name Fellowship of the Gamers), to combat the violent, psychotic stereotypes applied to gamers by people such as Jack Thompson, Hillary Clinton and Joseph Liebermann. To quote the organizers;

We will protest, mourn and show how real gamers play video games peacefully and responsibly. This demonstration is to show that gamers will not take the blame of this tragic matter but we will do what we can to help put an end to terrible events like this.

Destructoid would like to extend our heartfelt support to the rally, and to all of the people who strive to disprove the stereotype by not going absolutely wacko and offing a bunch of innocent people, just because some girl you've been stalking won't let you "roll her Katamari". We hope that if any of you can make it, you do so to show your support for what is (unfortunately) becoming one of the more important political hot-buttons of our era, and if you do attend, let us know how it went.

By the way, double points if you can start a "Free Mumia" chant.

@Earnest

Tis a joke and it would have been better if I added the quotation marks, implying that this is what people are gonna say. The man at work took my shift keys away.

this is no joke I am sponsoring this event and having some other big companies help to make this happen. Thanks for the post Earnest.

i shall honor them and take up arms with them by not turning on any gaming device, and wearing my tie around my head, thus making a new avatar for the forums. also, ill make sure to bring up the horrible gaming thing thats been plaguing us for a while at work and discuss it with the 4 fellow gamers that work where i do.

I don't mean to self promote but my article didnt make the front page for long and I wrote this before all this mess. Just wanted to show it off again as I tried to wake up the media that only promotes the blame of games!

I think it's a good cause but, doubt this will be picked up by the media. Maybe something like this should be done national or even worldwide – Germany, Italy, UK are struggling with the same thing – something that wouldn't be impossible with the help of the internet.

Enjoyed the post until you brought up a cop killer, Mumia. I enjoy the fact that he's in prison for killing a cop. But, maybe that's just me.

I'll be attending with a few friends, Itll be easy to spot us, we'll be the ones making the most noise holding our DSz.

@Drvby
I know it what you said in the first post was a joke, but it was in bad taste since the rally is on the weekend.

Bryant Park on a Saturday in May, eh? (rhyme unintended) Well, I usually don’t get out of bed before 1 PM on the weekends, but I’ll sure as hell try and make it down there from here.

I might be attending. Would it be appropriate to rock my Also, Cocks t-shirt at a demonstration advocating that we're peaceful, responsible people?

Isn't this just an odd damn coincidence! Just this morning I started up a forum thread about what we as members of the gaming community can do to help improve our image. This is one of them and good for these people! Bravo!

Hello,
My name is Arturo Sanchez - and I am a senior member of the organization Empire Arcadia Inc.

We are a corporation of Gamers that are pushing for the further development of the Greater Gaming Community and culture.

In light of such tragic events in Virginia - we call out to all the gamers in the world to join us in a peaceful demonstration of gamers against violence.

On May 5th - if you can not join us in NYC or at any other city that is holding rally events as well, then please turn on your games from 1pm until 10pm to play with us in peace.

This is the time for us gamers to rise above such petty politics and degenerate inhuman behavior.

We are not alone in this as there are several organizations and gamers who support us in this. This includes all of you.

This is not about violent video games per se. This is about gamers taking responsibility and to show that we are not violent. Furthermore, it reinforces the message that our leaders and politicians should do their job in finding a solution to such tragic problems that shake the delicate fabric of our society.

As gamers we may not have the money/social status/political connections that some of the social elite in our society DO have - but we have strength in numbers. We ARE the legion of gamers.

We urge you all to join in with Empire Arcadia and unite in a day of peace through gaming. Along with our supporters, sponsors and other entities like JC-Media + Entertainment LLC, Girl Gaming Network, ECA and more who look to help us make a stand for gamers, our community and culture.

If you have any questions please contact the administrator on your forums as he or she can then contact me.

I will be honest with you all, there are way too many of you for to answer all your emails, so I will have to do it through your community administrator or moderator for this particular community.

As things progress you can find out more information on www.empirearcadia.com

Thank you.

My office (Atari) is a mere two blocks from Bryant Park. I think some solidarity from the game publishers is in order. I intend to bring up the possibility of sponsoring this rally this very afternoon. It's about time we did something peaceful and meaningful about this.

Loudly declaring in blog comments that Jack Thompson/Dr. Phil/Hillary Clinton need to be shot?

Yeah, uh, dudes?

NOT HELPING.

AT ALL.

LordRegulus, that is what I have been saying a lot in that damn thread already. Makes it harder to defend our position as being non-violent when we behave like that.

I hope these folks get a good turnout, but I suspect that they might not. Just seems to me a significant number of gamers are pretty goddamn lazy and/or afraid of sunlight.

Nothing wrong with some lacking of sanity. As long as we're not talking psychopathic or violently deranged, what odds? Don't be prejudiced against the eccentrics!

Hrn. Edit button would be nice here. Forgot to mention, in regards to the jack thompson killing posts, I don't think it's a terribly good idea. A forum I used to be a member of was brought to court by a cuntish ticket company because of editorial comments made by the members of the boards. Knowing the mischievous mr. thompson, he could quite possibly be lurking the very posts where the jokes were made.

Er yeah, maybe it's my British reserve but what exactly is the point of the rally? Has there been some concrete link between that Virginia Tech brain-doner and videogames other than the usual knee-jerk ignorant blame-hungry reaction? I don't see Quentin Terantino organising a rally to vindicate his chosen media of responsibility.

Just to play devils advocate here, some videogames ARE violent and sick (and rated 18) and it could be possible that such extreme sensory input can have a detrimental effect on someone WHO IS ALREADY OFF THIER TITS MENTAL.

That being said, however, I think most reasonable people don't take the whole "MeatLoaf is the devil's music" bullshit too seriously, I'm curious as to if holding rally will perhaps show that the connection is taken serious by your defending of videogames which is basically the perpose a rally would serve.

p.s. did anyone else get a Resident Evil vibe from that VT idiot's photoshot?
Banj's Avatar - Comment posted on 04/23/2007 02:42

Surely, Virginia Tech is, to reasonable people, in no way related to games or gamers. Just seems a bit pointless and insensative to hold a rally saying "wasn't me".

Also, I'm not in support of the stupid connection between violent games and fucking fruitcakes, I was merely saying that it could be argued that any emotionally intense media could have an adverse affect on SOMEONE WHO IS ALREADY A MENTALIST.

Anyway, not trying to fall out with you brother, I'm just offering an opinion.
