The one thing I took away from this NXE introduction video was just how colorful it is. When you consider that this is a system which has Halo and Gears of War as its premier franchises, I feel this to be a misleading representation of the Xbox experience, new or otherwise. Still, that's what NXE is all about, I think ... misleading people.

Anyway, this is the first thing you will see upon booting up the New Xbox Experience ... the first thing that doesn't involve three red lights, anyway. As you can see, it promotes everything that the Xbox 360 is known for -- racing cars, big trees and music that sounds like it's a few notes away from being the Jurassic Park theme.

I can't help but feel that Microsoft is playing to an audience that doesn't exist. It would be like if the writers of Married With Children and Frasier swapped places for a day. The 360 install base is not the right audience for the vibe that MS is trying to give off. I understand that Microsoft wants to coax new people, but those new people have to be there already to see the NXE in the first place, don't they?

Who knows? Perhaps Microsoft's marketing campaign will pay off and we'll suddenly see an influx of trendy Apple fans who will buy into The 'Soft's new "casual" gimmick. Personally, if I were MS, I'd be concentrating on keeping the market I already have before worrying about other people's.

I believe it is perfectly legal to refer to trendy Apple fans as vermin. Also, this video is missing too many variations of grey and brown for me to believe its from the 360 family. Misleading indeed.

Personally, if I were MS, I'd be concentrating on keeping the market I already have before worrying about other people's. <- Then one remembers how classically bad MS is at marketing and branding in general, and that their xbox division is basically the exception to that rule.

Someone has a little sand in his vagina. Seriously how can someone be pissed because the Intro video, which you only have to watch the first time you boot up NXE is colourfull.(I spelled it with a "u" to calm you down. I think it's pretty and everything that get's at least some vibrant colours on my 360 is dearly welcomed.

It totally worked, this Apple fan has bought a 360! Of course, I bought it last fall, so this is still totally unnecessary in my opinion.

Jim, Microsoft may be barking up the wrong tree as they attempt to go casual- but I didn't see anything wrong with the video. =P It doesn't scream casual or any of that to me. It's just a cool little intro video. Nothing more.

Moar news plz?

I disagree, I think this is a strong evil move from a self-interested money-hungry company. With their high install base and history they already have a giant chunk of the dependable hardcore audience, a chunk that is growing as more people warm to the price cuts.

Between the pricing and established positioning, MS has got a solid leg up on Sony in the non-Asian markets. This NXE business neither cuts into nor helps that situation.

This is a shameless attempt to poach potential Nintendo customers. Nintendo has made buckets of cash from these first-time purchasers and casual gamers because of their own blatant appeal to that market and pricing. Now that MS can compete in pricing, if they can dupe first timers and casual gamers into thinking its the same either way - well all of Reggie's "We won't meet demands this year either" posturing really works against them.

Before, if a Wii-likely customer couldn't get a Wii, they probably didn't want to pay almost twice as much for a big scary hardcore console, so it worked in Nintendo's favour. Now, if MS's gambit works, those Wii-likely customers who can't just walk into WalMart and buy a Wii off the shelf are going to settle for the only-slightly more expensive, and no-longer as threatening Xbox, rather than get on some waiting list for a Wii.

I don't think they'll hurt Nintendo badly, but they will poach a whole-buncha potential sales lost due to Wii-demand outstripping Wii-supply. The Xbox has been eating Sony's North American breakfast for a while now, and if they can steal food off Nintendo's table, they're going to see a very positive return on this stunt.

TLDR above: MS is probably full of win with this deceptive NXE BS. I think its a strong move that will allow them to make new sales out of would-be Wii consumers, which will mark the first time they've competed with the Wii for the casual/noob market. If it works, MS could be the story of this holiday season, if it fails MS stands to lose little - its not like hardcore gamers don't know what the 360 is about either way.

Wait a sec. Halo doesn't have colour? You can be a pink and yellow spartan in a giant purple tank that shoots glowing blue bursts of plasma. How's that not colourful?

Gears I can understand though. Basically just shades of brown, green, gray and a little bit of red. Okay a lot of red.

NXE is totallly awesome, aside from the fact that I think it started crashing Fable 2 until I installed to the hdd. This video represents nothing particularly nefarious to me, I think it's just there to grab your attention the first time you boot NXE, so you think "Woooow!" on your first impression. It's just fireworks, man.

I don't know, Jim. This video is not at all a departure from the way Microsoft has been marketing the 360 since day one.

They have always gone for the 'hip''Apple-y' vibe with marketing for the 360. Doesn't anyone remember the viral stuff they did and launching the damn system on MTV? J. Allard in a damn sport coat and hoodie? Not too mention all that B.S. about the machine' appearance being designed to evoke an 'inhale'

And can we please end the lame 'games have no color' jokes? It's tired and not funny, and it's not really true. The only Xbox exclusive games that are truly dreary are Gears 1 & 2. And let's not forget all the racing and Rare games that have come out for the 360.

Quit it, guys! Sterling can criticize whatever he wants, however he wants, but if you criticize his opinions you're EMOTIONAL~~!!!!!11

@ Jim- Come on, now. We've taken the "gray Gears" stuff a bit too far. There are plenty of colorful games on the 360. And does anyone really think they're not going to "keep" their current market because they added a new dashboard and avatars? Yeah, I know TONS of people who will sell their 360s and stop playing Halo 3, GoW or any other less colorful games because of the bright and sunny avatars and interface.

I mean, come on now. Sure, most of the people criticizing the article tend to do so in a very immature way that makes it easy for you to dismiss them with a sarcastic remark, but there is a point to all this, which is essentially that you are really starting to reach with these posts.

Let us not think for a moment complexity must nullify. Can a man like more than one color, or taste, or smell? Can a company seek to broaden it's demographic and still retain it's essence? Sure they can. Until we see MS and it's partners abandoning the genres that put them on the map lets not get all doomsday. It is only good business to reach more markets. There have always been flatearthers in every field who abhor change. I still know people who think gaming sucks now that its 3d. MS's core essence is the mature gamer. They will never abandon that as long as there is demand. They are wise to branch out a bit and bring more quality to the casual. And color can be a good thing too as shocking and revolutinary as that may sound.
