Nvidia rocks a DirectX11 graphics card for under $200 photo

Hello, sensible pricing! Nvidia has finally revealed a DirectX11 graphics card that you won't need a second mortgage for. The GeForce GTX 460 costs $199, allowing you to keep up to speed on the computer game front for a price that almost approaches reasonable.

The GTX 460 promises "monster tessellation performance" and has received some pretty positive criticism. It'll ship in two versions: 768MB for $199, or a 1GB for $229. You can get the cheaper one from today, although you'll have to wait for an as-yet-to-be-released date for the pricier alternative.

Expensive graphics cards can sod off, by the way.

That is pretty neat, but the specs are worse than the DX10 cards you can get for cheaper.

That is great! By the time I need to buy a new graphics card in a few months there should be some affordable DX11 cards!

Is it $199 or $199.99? I need to determine if the "under $200" claim is cynical, or really cynical.

If I was in need of an upgrade (or a gaming PC) I would pick this up - Nvidia makes good stuff.

Man. I'm starting to wish I hadn't bought that mini-tower Gateway. There are only 2 videocard types that fit in my new PC and pretty much anything good by nVidia aint one of them D:

My GTX480 has been rock solid and runs no hotter then my old GTX280. I not sure why people are bitching about Nvidia new cards, they also have the best driver and support. Get a EVGA it you go for one life time warranty!

PC gaming video cards are four generations a head of the console GPU's now. I really can't stand playing on my PS3 or Xbox360 any more after playing a PC game. It's time for new consoles, not two years from now but right now.

HardOCP forum has a link to get the 768MB GTX460 for $173 ... its a sad fact that I live in Brazil and will never see that kind of deal ¬¬

Finally Nvidia has stepped up. Too bad I already bought the Radeon HD 5770 1 GB, at $169.99! I still think the Radeon HD 5770 is a better deal for a comparable card and can currently be had for under $150.00 now. Nvidia has better driver support for sure, but i'll deal with worse ATI drivers and better hardware for the money.

BTW... I love my PC games, but the Xbox is really close when it comes to graphics... STILL. I don't think any of these current games take full advanage of these PC graphics cards. Higher resolutions are cool, but I know these cards can handle so much more.

If it's better than my 9800, I can't complain. I wish I had the $200 for it, but I've much more to put that cash towards. I'll wait for a price drop/Newegg sale.

Performance has been great for a card at this price, look around at the benchmarks.

Why is this news when AMD has had the 5770 out for cheaper with similar performance for ages?

@Res 5770 is cheaper, but it's not the same performance.

5770 retails at about $165 or so, and gets considerably less performance than the 460. It's a video card that will hold it's own, but you are taking a gamble on the frequent unpredictable driver updates ATI does, and the fact that it can't actually run the fancy DX11 features all that well (but it can run them at least). Of course it's fine for the price.

The 460 is much closer to ATI's 5830 and that's exactly what it is designed to go against, which IS priced similarly (but from many bench's I see, 460 tends to out perform). Of course ATI also has eyefinity so if you got multiple monitors that's the way to go.

nVidia has been behind ATi for quite some time now. I don't expect to recover anytime soon considering that ATi has been offering better price for performance ratio. AMD is also offering better bang for your buck processors compared to Intel, but that is already common sense as it has almost always been that way. I find this article not researched enough and unless one is a die-hard nVidia fanboy, they should not buy anything from nVidia yet.

I'm happy with my HD5770. Only cost £100 where this is going to cost significantly more here AND is barely any quicker at all.
