The NPD Group and Gamasutra have teamed up to reveal the top five best-selling games for the three major consoles. While there are still a reasonable amount of big-budget titles on the horizon, it's interesting to see which games have been the most popular with consumers thus far.
For the PlayStation 3, the top sellers were Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty 4, Madden NFL 09, and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. Nothing too out of the ordinary, if you ask me.
Similarly, GTA IV was the highest selling Xbox 360 title, followed by CoD 4, Madden NFL 09, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, and finally Army of Two. It's surprising to see how well Army of Two performed, but then again, a good marketing campaign can really go a long way.
It should come as no surprise that Super Smash Bros. Brawl was numero uno on the Wii; the game prints money, don't cha know? Next up there's Mario Kart, then Wii Play, Wii Fit, and lastly, Guitar Hero III.
Is anyone else getting the feeling that some of the aforementioned games will be pushed down the list after the fall onslaught?
Even with the downloadable content for GTAIV, the only game I can see still being in those top five's in six months time is COD4 - which is still selling on good reputation alone.
You forget that the great elements of the game marginalize those few drawbacks. Maybe not GOTY in our eyes but still an excellent game/story not deserving of that much scorn.
I wouldn't argue that any particular aspect of GTA IV was perfect, but obviously you are in a very small minority when you call much of the game shitty, boring or inane. If you hated it that much, you probably did not like previous ones and this game was not really meant for those that hated the others. They aren't going to reinvent the wheel, especially when the VAST majority of the gaming world really appreciates the franchise as-is.
And, of course, there's that part where GH3, WHICH CAME OUT LAST YEAR, is one of the top selling games on the Wii. Whooda thunk the fake Guitars had staying power?
