Number munchers: The top-selling console games of the year detailed photo

The NPD Group and Gamasutra have teamed up to reveal the top five best-selling games for the three major consoles. While there are still a reasonable amount of big-budget titles on the horizon, it's interesting to see which games have been the most popular with consumers thus far.

For the PlayStation 3, the top sellers were Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty 4, Madden NFL 09, and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. Nothing too out of the ordinary, if you ask me.

Similarly, GTA IV was the highest selling Xbox 360 title, followed by CoD 4, Madden NFL 09, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, and finally Army of Two. It's surprising to see how well Army of Two performed, but then again, a good marketing campaign can really go a long way.

It should come as no surprise that Super Smash Bros. Brawl was numero uno on the Wii; the game prints money, don't cha know? Next up there's Mario Kart, then Wii Play, Wii Fit, and lastly, Guitar Hero III.

Is anyone else getting the feeling that some of the aforementioned games will be pushed down the list after the fall onslaught?

Yeah, I didn't expect to see Army of Two up there for 360, but then again I think the presence of COD4 in both of them is a testament to how there's not been too many 'mindblowing' launches so far this year - hell, that's what the last quarter is for.

Even with the downloadable content for GTAIV, the only game I can see still being in those top five's in six months time is COD4 - which is still selling on good reputation alone.

Shitty vehicle physics + clunky controls + broken cover system + inane minigames + boring side-missions + 8 million metric shit-tons of hype = GOTY!

Wow seeing Vegas 2 and Army of Two on that list just lowered my respect for Xboxers, which I had very little to being with. Don't they believe in quality in the very least their games?

@Volomon: Vegas 2's multiplayer was pretty sweet, have you played it?

@Phantom
You forget that the great elements of the game marginalize those few drawbacks. Maybe not GOTY in our eyes but still an excellent game/story not deserving of that much scorn.

I would argue that the story wasn't that great either, but to each his own.

@ Phantom-

I wouldn't argue that any particular aspect of GTA IV was perfect, but obviously you are in a very small minority when you call much of the game shitty, boring or inane. If you hated it that much, you probably did not like previous ones and this game was not really meant for those that hated the others. They aren't going to reinvent the wheel, especially when the VAST majority of the gaming world really appreciates the franchise as-is.

@aka: Actually, I own GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas. I wouldn't even go so far as to say that I hate 4, it's just that for the absolute shit storm of hype before its release and the incredible amount of praise it initially got, it didn't deserve the perfect 10 that everyone was slapping on it. As for the VAST majority of the gaming world appreciating it, well, from what I've read on dtoid, pretty much everyone got bored with it after a little while and few play it anymore.

I'm not sure if the very top selling games will be pushed down the list since gamers' budgets are gonna split between tons of games. At least for GTA, I think it might stay up there since it didn't have much competition then, plus it could continue selling in the fall.

The fact that more people didn't play No More Heroes-one of the smartest, most savage satires of American culture, American Game Design, and Americans obsessed with the Japanese- makes me sad. I guess its kind of surprising to see that both Vegas 2 and Army of 2 did well on the 360. And Prologue is a bad value, so it's a little weird to see that the GT5 demo managed to move at 40 bucks.
And, of course, there's that part where GH3, WHICH CAME OUT LAST YEAR, is one of the top selling games on the Wii. Whooda thunk the fake Guitars had staying power?
