It's weird to me that with the 3DS, people are so shocked and disappointed that Nintendo may come out with a new SKU down the line. It's sort of common business practice these says.
@ WelshWilderBeast- From what I've heard, the slide pad is very comfortable, and no one knows what the battery life is on the thing. Also, there are currently just five games that will be compatible with it.
Personally, I don't feel alienated by the thing. I just don't think I'm going to buy one.
Nintendo has been releasing revisions since the nes...........youd think people would get with the program
(according to funtrivia.com it actually means "leave luck to heaven")
I dunno, this whole thing has struck me as 90% people expressing legitimate misgivings, 10% trolling, and 100% of the gaming media ridiculing all of them.
Yeah I suppose they did something somewhat, almost not really similar. However none of the changes to the portable systems was poised to fundamentally effect the control scheme for the system.
The most change came from the DSi adding a camera .... that was used in what like three games? This isn't just some SKU with some internal hardware revisions to cut cost that the end user will likely never notice.
So yeah huge disappointment in Nintendo.
Not to mention a shining example of why people are not jumping on early hardware and consequently why the 3DS wasn't selling all that well to begin with. Because everyone knew there was a new hardware revision just around the corner that would probably have something like a better screen ...... not fundamental altered control scheme that further extends the middle finger to anyone who adopted early.
There is no issue. Nobody got hurt. Nobody is being tricked. Nothing is happening. You are all fighting phantoms in your false logic and self delusion.
That may be an extreme case and it's not known how Nintendo will act of course, but I don't think any platform that required a new part did well for very long after.
Majora's Mask comes to mind as the only successful example.
I don't think people are pissed that new literations of the 3ds will come out. Its the fact that the next sku will probably change the whole look and feel of the 3ds.
Yes all console manufactures make multiple different skus down the line that alter what the console looks like but neither the ds or the psp changed so drastically that affects gameplay. And I'm assuming that's why people are pissed, once the new 3ds comes out with the second nub I have a feeling the original 3ds will be obsolete.
@ Scuffles- Well, like I said, there is no current announcement that their is going to be a new double nub SKU, and even if there were, there are no games currently planned that will require that you use it. In that way, the slide pad is actually less disrupting that PS Move, Kinect, or Wii Motion Plus. Those are fundementally altered control schemes. The slide pad as of now is just an alternate option, for use with about five games.
The thing is though, I don't blame you or anyone for fearin that its going to get worse than that. Nintendo's has arguably its worst year ever for being in tune with consumer interest; the Operation Rainfall stuff, releasing games like Steel Diver for $40 for the 3DS, etc.
This whole thing is a huge opportunity for Nintendo to defy negative expectations and prove to consumers that they can meet their needs. It will be interesting to see how well they capitalize on that opportunity, if at all.
Besides Kinect and Move all revisions on the PS3 and 360 involved nothing more than using more energy efficient and smaller chipsets to decrease cost and increase reliability. There might have been some tweaking on hard drive sizes, USB ports and wireless but overall none of those effected what games you could play and how.
Until Kinect and Move. But those are small and vastly different control mechanisms that have never been used before in most cases. Certainly not industry standards.
Here we're talking about a second analog nub. This isn't new. We've had analog since the N64 and two since the PS1. This second nub isn't just some small revision. It's a big one that should have been present in the first place! It's been standard for the past three gens now on home consoles so why shouldn't Nintendo be eating tons of PR shit over this?
I think you're in denial over this Holmes. I respect you, but you stick up for Nintendo far too often on things that they have just royally botched. I think the thing you and many others forget is that having a second nub opens up the d pad for an additional 4 buttons to use if not five if the analogs have a button hidden in them as well.
A second nub vastly alters what game developers can do in terms of controls and features. Lest of all we forget the extra shoulder buttons that are included in the addon. This isn't just for FPS games either.
And we all know that a hardware revision for this is in the pipeline. Whether Nintendo is willing to hold off for a long while or not changes nothing of their hardware screw-up.
A second pad accessory spells doom for Nintendo? Whatever you say, fanboy. :D They're offering video recording in November, free demoes on the eShop, great first party games, and they oh yeah, persuaded Capcom to release the next major Monster Hunter sequel exclusively for their system. All of these things are what consumers wanted to happen for the 3DS since last year.
So this keeps getting brought up because of the 10% trolling about it? This article, with all due respect, is the first time I've seen you allow reasonable dissent, and it just so happens to be coming from a developer you hold in high regard. If I'm incorrect on that I apologize, I just haven't see it before now.
I don't mean to call you out on this, Holmes, you're generally one of the most reasonable and respectful contributors to this site and thus one of my favorite, but in my humble opinion, you've been a little defensive on this particular issue and more than a little dismissive and condescending toward the opposing viewpoint. Again, the "prophets of doom" represent a rather small minority of those speaking on the subject, yet they're being turned into straw men to dismiss any and all misgivings out of hand.
Many early adopters appear to feel somewhat betrayed by Nintendo right now. I'm not one of them because the 3DS has yet to pique my interest, but I do read their comments and can certainly see their point. I find it somewhat frustrating, then, to see them lumped in with the trolls and outright ridiculed. That sucks.
It's in the spirit of constructive criticism, Jonathan, that I say I haven't been a big fan of your reporting on this topic. I've found it to be entirely unfair toward those who, regardless of what you may personally think of it, feel they have a legitimate gripe. Just one guy's opinion, I could be wrong.
Seriously?
You want more of that? Even worse in this case it actually should have been part of the original design to begin with.
You know you all could just... stop giving Nintendo your money. I mean, I did and it's worked out great! I went from a GBA-SP to a DS Lite and have never considered getting anything past that. Good games are still being made on the regular old DS, so unless you really want to pay full price for N64 games or are that into gimmicky 3D then what's the point?
did you see last weekend's feature- http://www.destructoid.com/talking-to-women-about-videogames-3ds-2nd-nub-panic-211109.phtml
where i said "I think gamers had good cause to be extremely pessimistic about the analog nub cradle, mostly because Nintendo left way too much to the imagination in the process of revealing the product."?
Gah! Quoting myself feels so narcissistic and weird!
My misunderstanding, but now I'm left wondering, what IS your stance on this? Legitimate complaint that you feel has been overblown, I suppose?
What people are thinking is that, hey, the 3DS JUST launched, and they must have been working on this slide-pad thing WHILE they were working on the 3DS. It's not a situation where a year latter they're trying to correct a design flaw based on customer feedback, or the cost of materials has gone down enough to increase functionality for the same price.
People want to know why the nub wasn't included in the original design, and that's a valid question.
Things like this really put developers in an awkward situation. Should they incorporate it in their game? If they do, does it make the perception of the vanilla configuration appear to be the "inferior version"? Imagine that you want to make a new game, one that would be much better with two nubs; if the 3DS had those nubs standard then there would be no worries, but now you're dependent on people buying an accessory to really enjoy your work.
It's not the end of the world, it's not the end of Nintendo, but it is kind of a mess.
comicretard is no retard at all. In the end everyone will give their money to Nintendo. I know I will.
What should have happened: Nintendo begins production of a two analog stick 3DS and sends a free slidepad to anyone who has bought / will buy the current model.
What happened to game consumers when they were a fun bunch, and liked buying extras, and were excited when they used them, and embraced any faults? It's like the Tea Party of video games.
"The Vita is going to fail."
Hee hee. At this point, that is a stupid claim. The 3DS is going to outsell the Vita, but it's surely not going to fail. It will be more successful than the PSP.
Also, you think the Vita is THAT expensive?! People were expecting it to cost $349.99-399.99. Only $249.99/299.99 for it's powerful hardware/content, it's a good bargain. You can get 2 for the same price of an IPad. I bet you were saying the 3DS wasn't that overppriced when it was $249.99 at launch. Fanboys, these days.
Think about it... Sure, developers will probably still include a second control option for original owners, but if 2Nubs is standard, then they're probably going to develop the game with that feature in mind and tack on the optional controls in the end.
Thus, the original adopters are left to buy an awkward adapter to play games the way they were developed to be played.
Of course, this is all speculation, but I can't say I'd be pleased if I currently owned the system.
