The idea that the hip kids want to trade the same amount of money for the right lease a digital copy of a game so they dont have to be burdened with actually owning a physical copy they can do whatever they want with seems shortsighted and kind of stupid to me.
By that, I mean they sell a fifty Dollar game for fifty Euro.
Now you know what tips EA gave Nintendo on Digital Distribution.
Second, as others have said Nintendo is MOST LIKELY selling it at RRP, and it's GAME deciding to drop the price down. This is a surprising move from GAME, as generally the big family games are ALWAYS set at a higher price than everything else and NEVER go down.
So... no Jim. No. The only point I can agree on is the fact that gamers would be stupid to not get the cheapest option, which just happens to be GAME this time oddly enough.
But I'm pretty sure the system works on an MSRP. Its a suggested price, that retailers don't have to stick to, so they don't, most likely because they know they'll get more selling it cheaper and beat out the digital version.
The only way (I think) that Nintendo could possibly force an increase on the physical game is if they either tell the retailers they'll pull the game from their stores (which will probably renig on their contract with those stores) or to raise the price of the games when sold to the stores in the first place, forcing them into a situation where they have to sell the games for more to make a profit. Neither of which looks good on Nintendo.
Also, seriously, this was bound to happen sooner or later as the games come down in price. It just happened sooner. And 10 to 1 the retailers thought this was a good idea because of the outcry that this game is so much like the first one, they knew they couldn't ask the full price.
The issue here is that Nintendo is being stingy and not moving even an inch from their digital pricing, which is obviously absurd, but has got some people in such a tissy that they feel like its news to point it out, when, really, we all saw this coming any way and had been saying so for months now.
Lets just hope they don't carry this BS over to the Wii U, or they really will have problems.
Also, not to really poke at it, but this is kind of just like Nintendo.. I mean, not to really go back to it, early adopters of the 3DS paid a heavy premium for the right to say they owned it first, too.
""Publishers are so desperate to move away from those evil retailers who sell used games, yet they don't have the balls to ever piss them off, so they put their digital stores in positions where they can be constantly undercut. "
I don't see this as the case at all. I see this as a case of Nintendo feeling like their games are worth top dollar and are being greedy according to that. Just about every publisher does this when selling direct, its not exclusive to Nintendo. (and before people go on about Steam and Valve.. They've been the exception to the rule, one that even proves the point, for so long that it's really not even worth mentioning them any more. So seriously, quit it)
I'll also agree with Silent Protagonist.. Its really frustrating at times to see a headline only to come into the article and find out your only talking about the UK, let alone the failing GAME stores (and yeah, I see where their eShop is being butt raped, and that sucks, but this is Nintendo's way of telling people that Digital is a luxury on a luxury I guess -which is a pisser given they're just starting to get it right and can't really afford to say it this way). I mean, I like hearing whats going on in there, but to invokes feelings just to snake people in and it not even be about everywhere is sorta shifty.
But on a business sense level, digital should be the cheaper option.
No, but seriously, this is really stupid. I guess Nintendo thinks that the convenience of having the game on your 3ds at all times is worth another $10. The worst part about it is, they're kind of right. That sounds like something I'd do because I don't like carrying a bunch of games with me everywhere i go.
Sadly publishers continue to think that it is justifiable to charge more for a downloadable copy of a game than a physical copy, despite the fact that a physical copy costs the publisher far more to create and gives them a much smaller profit than I direct download.
