NPD says 170 million gamers in the US photo

Rejoice ye gamers, you are not alone. No, there are many of us and we hold hands in peace and harmony across America... or we're shooting each other online. Either way there's 170,000,000 of us according to the NPD's recently released 2009 Gamer Segmentation Report and we like playing games. Studies can be so revealing sometimes.

That number is an increase of 4.3 million since 2008 and NPD took the liberty of breaking it down a bit more. They've found seven groups of gamers in the U.S. The biggest is no surprise, and is the "Secondary Gamers" (33.6 million). These are mostly female gamers who play less than four hours a week and don't own a console. The segment that has grown the fastest over the past year is the mostly male "Console Gamers" (32.9 million), who own at least one or two dedicated gaming machines and play around 12 hours per week. Sadly, it seems that heavy portable gaming is shrinking with the "Heavy Portable Gamers" group (30.0 million), who own at least one portable and are the youngest group, growing smaller. The smallest section is the "Extreme Gamers," who play over 40 hours a week, and probably need some sunlight.

There's a few more interesting numbers that point out that PC gaming is actually growing. If you'd like to pay money to read them you can go here.

That is over half the population of the country.

And PC gaming growing isn't really surprising when you consider the vast range of types of games that encompasses compared to consoles (with the strong casual only markets, MMO markets, etc etc).

Revelle, I'm suprised there isn't already some kind of Town or small community for gamers to live. Then again not much would get done there...

Holy hell 40 hours? Yea those people definitely need some sunlight. Its good to see PC gaming is growing, I think it'll go up more when Diablo 3 gets released. I know I plan on getting a new rig, as mine is at least 5 years old, when that game comes out, and it might see another small boost when The Old Republic MMO comes out.

My 15 year old Brother is part of the Shrinking Group, guess it is true when I tell him not every kid gets to play as much as him or can

Maybe its cause all the kids his age are getting jobs and all the kids Younger than him that have no jobs are Playing games with their Parents

The last of the Extreme Gamers will probably end after this Generation

@Krow: With that said... Does a game tester count in the "Extreme Gamer" section?

It's not surprising at all that PC gaming is "actually" growing. It's always been growing. You might not own a console, but having a PC is practically a necessity for everyone, and nearly every PC can play SOME kind of game. Sure, we're not all wallowing in GPUs and Crysis-killing beasts, but even the cheapest netbooks available have been made to play Counterstrike, which is still one of the most popular games online.

40 hours really isn't that much, I play from 3-4 hours after work every day, and at least pop 7-10 hours on weekends.... Still haven't kissed a girl though, no surprise there.

Yeah, I guess the problem there is that girls exist in reality and you're spending half your waking life trying to escape it. If you can find a gamer girl though it's ALL G!

I wouldnt exactly call a person a gamer for owning a gaming console, just as I wouldnt call a person a movie enthusiast for owning a DVD player.

Calling people who don't own a console "Secondary gamers" is pretty cold, NPD.

So, 1/3 of Americans are "gamers"?

Now... if they can just convince those female PC gamers to buy consoles and play console games... the cost of console gaming might go down and game sale profits might go up.
